Houston model visits DTLA for free flowing shoot

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to shoot with model Lindsey Tierney (LindseyT.Tierney on Instagram) while she was in town from Houston. Letting your spirit run wild in the wilderness

I had the good fortune to work with model Ashley Green (hashleygreen2 on Instagram) and her free spirited nature and expressiveness made for a beautiful series of portraits. She drove an hour and a half for this shoot so we did a nature setting and shot at a pool so there will be plenty more port...

At a recent shoot with model Dharma Jones, I found this great patch of greenery reminiscent of early springtime complete with purple flowers. It made for a great spot for a series o...

The ideal afternoon involves perusing a classic work of literature

I’ve always been a fan of books. I grew up reading mysteries and legal thrillers. These days, I do less reading but I do enjoy using them as part of photo shoots. And this backyard setting for a shoot with model Ariana. The greenery and white sheet gave me relaxing, picnic vibes

The myriad ways you can put flowers to use

I’m always looking for props to complement portraits. Flowers, namely, are a great accessory and not only can be eye catching to the viewers, but also give the model something to play with and get creative. This is a flashback to a fun shoot with model Linda Lan in Los Angeles

Sharing a story through portraits

For so long, I mainly shared one portrait at a time on my social media feeds. As a former journalist, though, I’ve been drawn more lately to telling a story or setting a scene through a series of portraits. With this shoot with Taylor, I captured a mix of full portraits along with detail work.<...

Sometimes the simplest prop can make for the best portraits

Always have a camera at the ready, you never know what you might miss

When I shot a few months ago at this studio in downtown Los Angeles, there was an old Canon camera sitting there ready to be used as a prop. I put it to good use for this shoot with model Nikole Mitchell

Film cameras are a lost art

I always love to incorporate props to a shoot to add an extra element of creativity. The studio I shot at for this shoot with model Nikole Mitchell had an old film camera sitting nearby and so I grabbed it to mix in for a portrait or two or three

Gazing off into that Los Angeles skyline

The Los Angeles downtown area is a goldmine for beautiful studios to shoot in. As much as I love shooting outdoors, and utilizing natural light, you are often restricted to golden hour for the best light. That said, window light is excellent throughout the day in studio as shown here in this port...

Ready to jump in for more beach shoots

I’ve always been grateful for the plethora of beaches within a short drive of where I live. There’s nothing quite like a colorful sunset but even leading up to golden hour, the direct light can make for stunning portraits as it did on this shoot with model Michelle

Don’t be afraid of using harsh light

Relaxing morning in Los Angeles

Linda (Foodsandnood.ss on IG) has a great ability to flow naturally from one pose to the next. It’s almost as if the photographer isn’t even there. Which, is what I like, as someone who can simply step in and observe a scene and capture it.
