Imagine a game similar to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. With the aesthetics of Golden Boy and the hellish difficulty of Ghost and Goblins.
This game had a peculiarity. Enemies had a random percentage of dropping a mint leaf (life) or an olive (in-game currency), and the other 50% of the enemies didn't drop anything.
When you died, the game not only penalized you with losing your unsaved progress, but you also lost half of the olives you were carrying (with the subsequent farming required to advance the story). So this might be the first Souls-Like game I played. XD
