Defining Duke Ultimate, Episode 66: In The Name Of Physical Games

In a sobering conversation, Matty and Cog talk about the direction our industry is trending in. Standing on the edge of the abyss, we talk about the AAA power players who are shaking off traditional game development as they chase down the likes of blockchain gaming. With NPD data showing that physical game collecting is now a niche thing even in brand new releases, are people like Matty just old people shouting at clouds?

If it’s a game I like I buy a digital and physical version. I play the digital and keep the physical unopened.

Just subscribed last night to this patreon. I’ve been listening to DD a couple months now and I love it so much. I learned of this from Mr.Matty’s channel (which I’ve been watch for years) so I’m so glad this podcast exists and now I get bonus content! My sanity has been saved at work thank you guys! Also yeah when it comes to physical games nowadays when I buy a game that’s not on pc I go for physical especially for the switch. I love the little cases.

I had no idea limited run was based in Raleigh. Their new store is only 10 minutes from my house. I gotta pop over there this weekend

Seany Mac

I’ve also been slowly moving more towards physical, at least for classic games

As a physical games collector, I really enjoyed this discussion. In the future, would you prefer the launch release of AAA games to be digital only, and then have a limited release of physical games later on once all the patches have been implemented? While it would be a bummer to have to wait a little longer for the physical disc, I think it’d ultimately be a better option for game preservation. And I don’t mind double dipping on both physical and digital releases anyways for my favorite franchises, like The Last of Us or Horizon.

I just wanna say this is the first episode I listened to that I really appreciated because I do like physical games. I'm 100% not an Xbox guy but this is a great episode.

Jason Olmstead

I've kept every single physical game I've received since the NES. Love displaying my large collection and being able to see it. I played elden ring last night offline without the current patch and cheesesd the shit out of a tough boss. All things not possible with digital games

TreyDogg

Awww man lots of good memories at GameStop for midnight releases.

Jeremy Shook

Dustin had his arms folded this episode.

Brandon Soto

I think the game you guys were talking about was battleborn?

Jordan Clarmont

Right with you Matty, my physical collection is a prized possession but as a 30 year old I do feel like it’s making me a relic of a lost time 😂

Okay i know this is EXTREMELY controversial but, as a pro crypto and NFT and blockchain guy, I really believe NFTs can help games and game ownership in the digital Era live in perpetuity.... seriously, I've done hours and hours of research and this could go either dystopian or, if done correctly, we can solve a lot of issues... think about it, do some research.. and above all else thank you guys for the content, love to hear yalls opinions!

Have a disc PS5 and buy everything physical. I am 23 and grew up with physical and haven’t wanted to make the switch. I like having something tangible representing the game

Ian Hanson

I haven’t finished listening, but I think Marty is thinking about Gigantic

Gentlemen I enjoyed this episode. I switched to digital in 09 but made the switch back to physical in 2019. What caused me to go all digital at the time was I was worried about hardware failure with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I had to replace both systems twice at that time so I wanted to make sure my hardware would last. I switched back due to the fact the cost for physical was cheaper unless there was a sale. And I honestly miss backwards compatibility in systems. Yes Microsoft does it but it is not 100 percent. I always thought how Sony did it back with the PS3 launch was the best way. Yeah it costed more but it was worth it to play 3 gens of playstation games. I didn't need updated visuals or frames. I just wanted to be able to pop the disc in and play.

Sorry guys I hate physical games I only buy a physical game when there is like a $25 difference for the game vs digital. I think the sooner we get rid of them the better.

Shane Geis

Rarely buy physical, only if i find it for significantly cheaper would i buy physical over digital.

Dana Anderson

Switched to all digital in 2018.

Grimm Carousel

I wasn't said I would never switch to digtal. Then day one patches became the norm. A CD is nothing more than a license key.

Bambi_Cobblestone

Haven't owned a physical game in probably ten years. Haven't missed physical media once.
