Straw Hat Episode 12+13
Added 2023-06-10 08:53:57 +0000 UTC
:3 just some straw hat fun. I'm so freaking happy watching this!!
I don't think Kaya was wrong for not trusting Usopp in the moment, but in hindsight she was probably aware that this was an unusual lie for Usopp. He may lie, but he never lied in such a hurtful way. He definitely holds responsibility, but it definitely makes sense why she felt such guilt for not trusting him this time. Great arc :>

It's honestly to be expected that the bo staff stopped the sword. Cutting through the wooden staff of a spear is basically not doable in mid combat. The same applies here.
It's because the wood with which the staffs are made are structured perpendicularly to the length's of the staff and also because of the wood being treated.
And even if by some luck the sword cut a bit into the staff, it would either get stuff at a weird angle into the wood or just make a small wood piece splinter off without it doing any meaningful damage to the staff.
Never underestimate the structural integrity of wood.

oh hell nah the west at least tries even if it ends up being cringy but most of the time anime and manga use lgbt people as a joke like they're just supposed to be funny because they are gay and that's it. I gotta admit tho, when it's done well it definitely is done better and far more natural than it is over here

Really? Outside of filler I think that early One Piece is not only well paced but far better paced than modern One Piece lol I think the part about the old animation style is true tho I think it's charming but I can see why people would be put off by it

It'd be great if Kaya found Merry bleeding out, listened to him explain that Klahadore was the culprit, then responded with
"I...I...I can't believe you're making up stories just like Ulsopp!"

i think the reason people drop early one piece is the same reason people would drop out of dbz if they haven't watched it as a kid. the animation and pacing of 90's anime makes it really slow to watch.

Fun Fact - Pirates actually did have dental! And health! Granted, the treatments they had access to were based on whoever they could get to doctor, but they had it which is more than a lot of workers had in that age. It's part of the reason being a pirate was so alluring.

I think they chose a sling shot to keep the main characters from using obviously leathal methods. Luffy basically just punches, a bow staff, and ... swords?

Dog people telling you about shit need to just let you watch the show. There’s still currently some “comedy” parts that aren’t great but for the most part oda is really progressive. Man’s been showing queer non binary people in a positive way since like 2008

I think Doppio had those sh!+ patterns on his clothes as well - which would make sense considering Doppio & Kuro were both conceptualized around the same time (1998)

I don't think Alicia actually know how deadly a slingshot is, a real slingshot at close-mid range can have the same killing power as a .44 magnum. they will go right through you chest or crack you skull if you are using the right ammo at the right range.

Hey there everybody! How are you all doing? Me? I'm feline fine. Are you all ready for the clawesome Spoiler-free OP trivia show Straw wHAT Trivia?! You are? Purrfect. Let's go!
Episode 12
Captain Kuro, of the Black cat pirates has a very appropriate name as Kuro is the Japanese word for "black". Also, Alicia you really are in tune with One Piece; mangaka Eichiro Oda himself said that the gold emblems on Kuro's jacket actually do symbolize dung. I guess Kuro is a bit of a shit after all. What's that? His favorite food? Well, of course what else would you expect but... bananas? Wait, I expected salmon! I bet $100 dollars on that! This is a cat-astrophy!!!
Episode 13
Syrup village is part of the bigger group of islands known as the Gecko Islands. Like a sticky lizard? Actually the name more likely refers to the Japanese for moonlight (月光, Gekkō)—tying in with the general "crescent moon" motif of the Syrup Village Arc.
I just learned something about Kaya's butler Merry and now I sure feel sheepish. His sheep-like appearance is a pun on his occupation, as the Japanese word for butler Shitsuji sounds nearly identical to the word for sheep, Hitsuji. I wonder if Kaya ever slapped him. You know, a case where she hit her hitsuji shitsuji Merry... gack! <--- bit my tongue

Even when i watched One Piece for the first time in the past, I always thought about how the way Kuro adjusted his glasses was weird, and when i made the connection that he adjusts his glasses that way cos he is used to having finger blades, it blew my mind. And this is just a small showcase of Oda's storytelling prowess.

Btw, it's nice that you always post double episodes, but don't force yourself to do that every time. If you don't have the time or the will to do a double episode, a single-episode reaction is fine too.
Also, FYI, this arc will end on ep 17.

One piece is actually a much more progressive show than most people give it credit for. I won't go into spoilers on why, but there are more strong female characters than I can count, and even a handful of trans characters to boot

This is not true.
I will say spoiler warning here with the caveat that it would only be for the MOST spoiler sensitive people cause its really nothing.
There is at least one character I can think of that openly complains about Namis outfit in a somewhat sexist manner and isn't really portrayed as a pervert. (Hint: for those who know, water arc.)

Also, a lot of the time when they're sexualised, it's really just them being sexy - Nami, for example, puts herself out there sexily because she wants to. That's a kind of power for a woman. A lot of these ladies are just feelin' themselves and looking good doing so. You'll note that a LOT of the time 'sexy' women in the show aren't looked at much differently by the people in the show than men are (bar some pervy characters who are shown to be pervs). The show itself doesn't make a note of anything Nami or other women wearing as being unusual for other people to wear in the world - only those deemed actual perverts (and looked down on as such by others!) care what any of the women in the show wear. One Piece's world doesn't care about policing women's clothes, calling them out for wearing sexy or the like and we see all shapes of women wear all kinds of fits without giving a shit. I love that! As a woman, I love that.

Some people see Nami not being one of the frontline fighters and make claims that it means the show is sexist. One Piece has so many strong women, that while they do get sexualized a lot, can go toe to toe with the male characters
Shadowsofpain
2023-06-10 11:29:43 +0000 UTC
I do not understand the sexism statements..... literally we have already seen Alvida who is a woman who lugs around a massive club and bludgeons people to death. And an as of yet unnamed girl who trained in the sword with Zorro..... As far as "weaker" women we have seen Nami who has beat up multiple people and Kaya who is literally bed ridden with illness. There are also countless very powerful and also emotionally strong women who have not shown up yet. I can understand people complaining a bit about how sexualized some female characters are, but women being weaker than men? Like, what?

Huh. Just realized that the butler who got was cleaning the chandelier was a hitsuji (sheep) shitsuji (butler). Yay wordplay.
Also, I think you are underestimating slingshots. Don't know the draw strength of Soup's, but modern slingshots can match some small firearms (at close proximity). Admittedly, his doesn't look very impressive, but hey, Shonen magic, you know?

Thankies for upload! Also i feel like One Piece is more about.. what Masculinity IS rather than what it represents? Like a big theme for the show is honestly masculinity, but i think its more a catch all/dated term like you said? Because these "masculine" "romantic" ideals are represented in women even early on with Alvida and Nami.

the scary thing about Kuro is that he is one of the most real world enemies in one piece, he's a psychopath with no human emotions that has bloodlust, there are more evil characters in One Piece but they are over the top while Kuro stays real world serial killer levels

It's cool how you are noting about some of the quirks and charms of early One Piece animation. It's worth knowing that the One Piece anime first aired in 1999 and started out hand drawn and was for quite a few years. You can even find animation cels on ebay! I can't imagine the working conditions back then doing hand drawn cell animation along with doing a weekly anime like One Piece pushing our 40 plus episodes a year! It's interesting to see the animation style change over the years, not to mention you see the show go from standard to HD. It's a neat time capsule of sorts.
