My Hero Academia 2x3

MHA always captivated me on my first watch. It has a unique take on the road-to-hero genre but with that caveat where you basically know as a watcher that the main character will always make it but you just don't know how, like Yu-Gi-Oh and One-Punch Man. Most animes with growing characters start off weak then consistently develop in their ideals, power output or battle prowess/sense. Many walls they encounter are minor or are resolved out of nowhere (deus ex machina). MHA on the other hand, has Deku repeatedly throw himself against a wall, struggling to break it down. On the way, we see the many small beats along with his own thought processes. Once he breaks through, it opens so many doors which changes the problem from few/no options to too many options. All of which need to be assessed. Every answer he gets spawns many questions and the manga acknowledges them. It's so cool that he builds on those questions, because he's a fanboy AND a scholar archetype. He's also resolving deeply embedded insecurities from neglect, trauma, and just being a teenager. I don't see enough of that in shounen anime. I love watching class A and many of the other characters grow. I'd love to watch Mineta grow too, if only he'd get more opportunities.

What's really amazing about the way Deku won here was that he did it without using his quirk at all. In an obstacle race filled with superpowered freaks all using their powers to the best of their ability he just used his normal boy abilities to surpass them all.

An interesting take on “luck” or “being lucky” comes from Bluelock. Anyone can be lucky, but only those with real skill can use that luck to the fullest, or take hold of it when they see it. Like you said, his intellect is what won him that race. Not just anyone would have thought to use that piece of the robot in that way. And it’s only Deku that could have done it in the first place.
