Just a fun fact: the manga is a weekly episodic release so in the first chapters it was really hooking, because they ended with the doctor dying as the cliffhanger so no one knew what the story was going to be about…then they had the reincarnation angle and 5-6 chapters about a slice of life of these kids growing up with Ai as their mother before the next chapter hit everyone like a truck. The reason that this was released like a movie is because it was a movie in Japan and they sold it that way as it would be way too confusing for the first episode to be split into the chapters like the manga was. Imagine how anime only watchers would react if episode 1 ended with the doctor dying and had to wait until next week to see where the premise of the story was going…that’s how the manga was but it would kill the pacing of the anime.
