Legs, 36 degrees and hubs..

R2D2 constantly challenges the design skills, trying to puzzle out various problems and trying to fit everything into such a small place. This weekend has been about 6 hours of designing the legs, getting the foot locks to work. R2s legs go 36 degrees back, the body leans 18 degrees and the feet hav...

And the legs begin...

So we're now have the version 2 of the Body complete (still needs more modules but I'll get onto that.. So we start with a new design for the legs based on CSR specs. Just looking at two lengths as there's a longer version for 2-3-2 so the battery boxes don't mash into the skirt...

Rear panel greebles

So here the fixings for the rear panel coin returns and power coupler printed. Nice fit and solid but removable if you need to replace for whatever reason.

Rear Greebles Posted!

Hi all, The Rear Panel Greebles have been added to the Rear Panel. They come with a bracket to hold them into the rear panel. Just printing to test them but I'm sure they'll be spot on :-).. This concludes the full body. Next are the fixed shoulders and then onto the legs. As always post any questio...

The pain of a prototype

I knew it was coming, I printed the base using a previous (unpublished) version. The first design didn't cater for the rear panel, so I had to dremel it back and print a couple of parts to convert to the current version (so I can test the rear panel). All dremeled and parts added. Works perfectly! P...

Back panel fixing

So, first fit (and the panel isn't finished yet) of the back panel. The centre (missing) panel is held in with magnets, when removed it gives access to a hatch with the locking mechanism in. So simply pop off the center panel, one screw and the back panel comes off for access (that's the theory but ...

A little bit about orientation...

3D isn't too bad, designing for 3D printing needs much more grey matter effort... So in 3D printing land we have the six pain in the a**'s

1) We have gravity! Therefore it's either supports or trying to position the model so minimum (or no) support is needed!

2) Then you've g...

Back panel design...

Just putting the finishing touches to the back panel. I've built in a hidden fixing mechanism which I'm hoping will work well. Just printing the first few parts out then I'll shared the files once I've tested!
After that the body is done. Onwards and upwards to the shoulders and legs. Quite a few...

Skirt fixings

Here's the skirt finished. The plates are to hold M6 captive nuts in place in the main skirt, which bolts to the underside of the frame. Every part has engineered fixings.

Ready for more ABS

Today I've been doing a bit of Printer prep! I got a new Prusa i3 mk2 and need an enclosure to get reliable ABS prints. A superb IKEA lack table hack is available on Thingiverse so built the first part of the frame. Two tables and some printed parts later we have an enclosure. That combined with my ...

The upper ring fitted

View Post

Main body complete!

Just tested the final ring and it fits! At last after a couple of tweaks and reprints. I've also test bolted the parts together (I'll put a list of screw / bolts I've used hopefully in the instructions. ) really pleased with the solidity of it (if that's a word!).

Upper ring

Just adjusted the upper ring on the frame. Slightly reduced the scale and tweaked the edges. Fit's like a glove now! All files updated on the share.

Skirt & Top body ring added...

I've updated the instructions for Body version 2 and added a couple of extra parts, the full skirt is there along with the upper ring which holds the top of the body together. I've finally got hold of a rockler diagrame so I've included holes for the Rocker Mount (I think, I haven't got one to test)...

3D printing...

I'm getting my act (and files) together. Up to this point I've been designing for myself, sharing the stuff as I go and building stuff. My shared OneDrive folder will be the main repository for all my files with free and open access. I will also put together a Patreon folder with some other stuff in...

R2D2 version 2 body files and more....

Ok folks, I won't be sharing the full R2D2 design completely  on Thingiverse. It's a real grey area for these files now and Astromech.net will be my main area for Astromech related designs. This is still free to join and a great community to help on R2D2 builds, we have to respect the agre...
