Michael was a hybrid so perhaps he can die from a stake through the heart as well as silver? Although a metal pole through his chest didn't kill him (I guess it has to be wood). Vampires seem to be able to die from blood loss too, or at least become super weak, perhaps that's why Michael was in a coma while he was low on blood and it took a while to heal.
