Nita Neary, Part 3

The final portion of the interview with Nita Neary, after she is brought out of her hypnosis:

What did you think when you saw him?

Neary: I thought we had a burglar, but I never suspected anything as bad as… what happened. So when I got my roommate up, I was asking her, should we call the police? I thought she’d know if someone did have a guy up there. I don’t know why I didn’t think anything about the club… And as we were talking about it out in the hall, that’s when Karen came out of her room… Can I ask, were the other girls, the ones who survived, were they any help at all?

No. They were hit while they were sleeping. They were unconscious before they could see anything. That’s why this man’s got to be caught. That’s why everything you can think of is so important. We’ve got to stop him.

Neary: He’s connected with the Thomas girl, isn’t he?

We think so.

Neary: So obviously this guy is pretty smart. If he can attack another girl, an hour later, six blocks away with all the police at the Chi-O house…

Well… he’s very brazen.

They were persuading her. There was tremendous pressure to close the case, whether or not they found the right person. Though in this instance I believe they convicted the actual perpetrator.

This interview bugs me. Why do the interviews seem so aggressive. Definitely feel like they are persuading her to implicate Ted. Cringy.

Yes, but I think that's why Bundy/O'Connell avoided a jury trial... they thought that the media coverage would taint the jury (he was already big news by February 1976) and that the judge would be more likely to hold himself to impartiality.

People do not realize that the evidence in the Chi Omega case was actually very weak. These documentaries create a false perception what a strong criminal case looks like. By the time he got to Florida the world was aware of the allegations regarding his involvement in Washington, kidnapping conviction, murder trial in Colorado and his two escapes. I always wonder what would of happened if Ted Bundy ignored his attorney’s advice in the Carol DeRonch case and actually requested a jury trial. Do not be fooled, it was not Ted Bundy’s idea to request a bench trial which leaves only the judge in control of conviction. I will hear many attempts to correct me by claiming it was Ted Bundy’s idea for a bench trial. It is not difficult to convince someone when they think its actually their idea. In his kidnapping trial no evidence was allowed regarding the Washington allegations and no evidence regarding gas receipts which implicated him in other disappearances in Utah or Colorado. The prosecutor filed motions and there were hearings regarding this and the Judge reviewed all this but made the legally correct decision to not all that information in. So basically the only evidence a jury would hear was the victim's testimony which we all know was very unreliable.
