Ask Me Anything!

The time has finally come! To celebrate reaching 50 total subscribers, I'm dedicating a post to answer all your burning questions. Now, before we get started, I have one rule I'd like to make clear.

No Spoilers! I won't be sharing any information about future plot points or storylines. I might drop hints if I'm feeling spicy, but that's it. This mostly applies to my current projects, however. If you're curious about what other Books I might have planned, there's a good chance I'll be a bit more open.

Other than that, I'm pretty much an open book. Ask away!

Dang you actually went for it? I'm glad it proved to be an interesting and somewhat enjoyable experience!

Nyx Nyghtingale

Huh. That's nowhere near as bad as I expected. If I could find a less vinegary pickle, I might honestly love it. EDIT: The pickle juice itself in the icecream is kind of nice.

This is actually something I find pretty easy! The settings are SO different, for millions of reasons. Blood & Chlorophyll is set in someone else's universe, the Becoming Monsters setting. There are hard rules baked into the world, with Classes, Races, and Leveling. Personally, I also use this setting to be a bit more whimsical and light-hearted. I use real world locations, I have tiny vignettes where my characters break the fourth wall, things like that. SaS has very loose rules, I control all the worldbuilding, and it's set in a fictional college town. While there is still occasional humor, it's in the character interactions, not necessarily baked into the world. The other big thing that keeps them separate are the characters, as well as the central conflicts. SaS is a deeply personal story about identity and trying to find oneself. B&C is, more or less, a cute lesbian romance story where they happen to have an external threat. I feel my biggest strength is character writing, and that's why the two series feel so different.

Nyx Nyghtingale

What challenges do you face in storytelling/worldbuilding in keeping SaS and B&C seperate from each other and not get.to a point to where they feel like clones of each other? For example B&C is D&D and SaS is Paranormal Fantasy.

Gerald Ferguson

Hmmm. A likely answer, "Nyx."

So honestly, I'm pretty bad about reading. I was one of those kids that stopped reading almost entirely after high school, and in recent years I've started trying to rediscover it. Recently, I've read "Legends & Lattes" and "You can't spell treason without tea". Both are cozy fantasy, lesbian love stories that I really really liked. One of my favorite books from ages past was "Lord of Snow & Shadows". You'll never believe this, but it's about someone wrestling with their instincts as they slowly turn more and more demonic. I really enjoyed the whole trilogy that book was from.

What are 3 of your favorite books?

Seth Rothberg

If you try it you'll have to let me know how it is XD

Nyx Nyghtingale

Well, I kind of have to admit I'm curious about it now

Ryan

She is putting them in the ice cream. She also won't do this unless she's SURE she's among friends.

Nyx Nyghtingale

Just so I can get the right picture, is Chloe putting the pickles in her ice cream, or just eating them as a side order?

Ryan

Nick has a very professional headshot. Amara took it for him to use on resumes, and he decided to also use it for his socials. Amara's profile pic is one she took for her sexy photoshoot. However, she only posted it after an entire day of panicking about whether it was a good idea, and Nick got approximately 20 texts about if she should or not. Tessa's profile pic changes all the time. She never takes pictures herself, and will often switch her profile to something candid she finds on social media the morning after going out partying. Vee took several pictures of herself that she used when applying for colleges. Sure, that was almost two years ago, but they're still good, right? Chloé met David Tennant at a convention once and paid to get a picture with him. She was dressed as the TARDIS, and they did a silly pose together. It's one of her greatest treasures. Katrina hasn't changed her profile picture since the Change. Any friends that survived the Change have no idea she's now a tall, raven-haired deathtrap. (Sadly, I'm avoiding specifics as to not spoil anything here.) Alicia only just rediscovered her socials when Katrina flew into her life. Her profile pic was taken on the night of her senior prom, she was posing with her best friend. However, the picture was later cropped to only include her.

*Looks around suspiciously* ...Wendy's?

Nyx Nyghtingale

Mine? Moosetracks! (I have a soft spot for reese's) Amara: Is fine with any flavor, but it WILL be drenched in the deepest, darkest chocolate sauce she can find. Vee: Loves fruity flavors, and rainbow sherbert most of all. Extra fun if she can pair it with some colorful wafers. Tessa: Orders a banana split, though she'll only eat the banana if she thinks it'll impress her date. She will, however, make a joke about popping cherries, then show you a cool trick she can do with her tongue and a cherry stem. Chloé: Really likes strawberry ice cream. However, she also has a weird compulsion to pair it with pickles, she promises it's not weird and please don't judge her. Nick: Secretly loves mochi ice cream, and thinks it's a great idea for a first date activity. His favorite flavor is green tea.

Noted. Please excuse me while I add a few games to my Steam wishlist.

AFanofRoses

What would Amara, Nick, Tessa, Vee, Chloé, Katrina, and/or Alicia use as profile pictures on social media? Feel free to answer for as many or as few as you like.

AFanofRoses

In Chapter 16, after Chloé brings Amara to the ruins of the Jade Palace, she says this. "I lost a lot of muscle after I started hormones." I'm purposely being very subtle with it, to try and make it feel natural, but she's referring to when she started Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Hold the phone !!! Chloe is transgender?!?! Where did I miss that important detail?

. . . What's for dinner tonight?

Gaming! I love video games, they've been my biggest, most consistent passion throughout my life. I also regularly play D&D with a close group of friends; we've been playing together ever since Covid hit. Some of my favorite games: -Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask AND Tears of the Kingdom -Metal Gear Solid 3 (SO excited for Delta, and mad they haven't announced a release date yet) -Outer Wilds -Unpacking -Cyberpunk 2077 -Hades -Tales of Berseria (Velvet is a demon AND a pirate, it's a crime this game isn't more popular) -I'm sure I've got plenty more, but that's a pretty solid list for now XD

Nyx Nyghtingale

What would each character's (SaS) favorite ice cream be? (And yours too)

What are your other hobbies outside of writing?

AFanofRoses

Thankfully this is something I feel I'm quite good at! I publish one chapter a week, which means I only have to write one chapter a week! Most of my chapters average around 5k-7k words, which I can easily handle in a week. By bouncing back and forth, I guarantee that both my stories get equal attention, and I can stay focused on one story at a time. that being said, my current schedule can make it a little difficult to introduce extra content, which is why Tessa's story is taking longer than expected. I'm also now fighting the scheduling challenge of posting twice as fast so that I can submit SaS Chapter 26 to a contest of Literotica. I also frequently think about my stories while I'm busy with other things; driving, cooking, gaming, etc. When I'm sitting down to write, I often know exactly what needs to happen, so I never have any pressure to come up with new plot points. I wish my advice was a bit more practical, but hopefully that answered your question XD

Over the years, I've gotten pretty annoyed at not seeing media that feels representative of my own life or experiences. This is especially true in smut spaces, which feel overly populated by stories aimed at a (presumably) masculine audience. There are only harems, not legitimate polyamorous relationships. Lesbian interactions are approached as fetish material, and the sex they have is written to appeal to mean. In my personal life, I'm a lesbian that practices polyamory, and I also have experience with various types of kink play. I try to write from this angle, hoping to provide a counterweight to the heavily male-biased smut writing I see so much of. Even when my characters are having straight-appearing sex (Amara and Nick, for example), they're openly discussing what they like and dislike. They establish safewords, check in while they're playing, and take time to explore their partners to ensure everyone is comfortable. All too frequently, I see sex scenes that skip over the communication in favor of showing how hard everyone can thrust into each other. On a broader scale, Amara's journey of personal discovery, of wrestling with who she wants to be, is directly informed by many of my own experiences. On some occasions, I've taken personal details or anecdotes and written them directly into the story, in hopes of making her struggles feel more personal. She's excited to discover her identity, but also worried about what it represents, which is something I went through myself. I've had multiple people tell me, without prompting, that Amara's discovery of her demonic nature parallels their own queer experiences, which is something I'm very proud of. Tessa is polyamorous, kinky, and has openly admitted to engaging with sex work, yet none of the characters treat this as weird. While I've never done sex work myself, I've certainly been tempted to in the past, and it's something I wish we had more healthy examples of. Plus, Chloé is transgender, yet it's only a tiny part of her character. Through all these characters, I want people to feel seen and to have exciting stories that they can relate to. I'm trying to keep this reply somewhat manageable, though it's difficult given how passionate I am about everything I'm doing with my writing. TL:DR - I want to create healthy representation for groups that don't get enough of it. And I want to see lots of pretty girls kiss each other.

Suddenly A Succubus is my first story! Well, technically I wrote a couple very short stories decades ago in school, but those were for school projects rather than any kind of personal fulfillment. I don't really count those, myself.

Nyx Nyghtingale

I'm actually pretty bad at focusing if there's anything on in the background. If I put on, say, a podcast or a TV show, I would just end up watching it rather than writing. I've got a playlist with a bunch of Lo-Fi music on it, which is the perfect amount of ambient background noise for me. It's enough noise to scare away the deathly stillness of silence, but not enough to be distracting!

Nyx Nyghtingale

When you write, do you listen to and/or watch music, podcasts, internet videos, T.V. shows, etc? If so, what is your favorite thing(s) to put on?

AFanofRoses

Is Suddenly A Succubus the first story you've ever written? (Not just published, ever written) If not, what was your first story about?

AFanofRoses

Authors typically draw inspiration for their work from their own lives. How does your life affect SaS and B&C?

Gerald Ferguson

My question is a logistics question. How do you balance your time between multiple stories?
