Devil In The Waters, Book 5, Chapter 5 (complete)

The walk along the shaded alley was dreadful. Every doubt and weakness throbbed within him. He was exposed, two sets of eyes watching him. One his bully, the other his beautiful wife. Both of them looking well-suited together. How were his clothes? Was he walking too fast? Was that too eager? Was he walking too slow? Did that show fear? What about what he was wearing? Were they laughing at his clothes? His hair? This was like high school hallway all over again. Transported in time back ten years ago. But that was all supposed to be left behind. How ingrained was it that he could feel it now? That woman watching him wasn’t some high school bitch-queen whom he fantasized about. No, that was Kimmy Chang. Shit, no—more precisely: Kimmy Waters . . .

The woman you married. In high school, she was just like you. In high school she was one of the good ones. Sweet and kind and studious. Compassionate. Don’t equate her with Devlin . . .

And now, even if it looked stupider, he walked more erect, more upright. Thrusting out his chest. That worry was all ten years ago. That woman with Devlin was his wife. Devlin couldn’t be so lucky . . .

As he drew nearer, merging into the sunlight beyond the brick archway and onto the sidewalk, Devlin hauled himself off his roadster, extended a hand to shake. “Josh Waters,” he said, “wow, it’s been a long time . . .”

“Hey, Devlin,” he said, avoiding too-long eye contact and shaking Devlin’s hand—Jesus, how big was his hand?—averting his eyes, not because he was afraid to lock them with Devlin’s but because he wanted them connected with Kimmy’s. And when his gaze met hers, she smiled, cocked her head, and they communicated between them what had been said at the table. Invite him in. I want that. He was the bigger man here. Well, not literally bigger

“Josh, I haven’t seen you in so long,” Devlin said.

“We were both at Tiffany’s.”

“Right,” Devlin said, acting like it hadn’t registered.

Josh said, “Didn’t we talk there?”

Devlin thought about it then shook his head no, saying, “I don’t think so . . .”

“Well, whatever . . . how’ve you been doing?”

“How’ve I been doing? I’m more impressed by how you’re doing . . .” His grin was sly, his dark eyes narrow.

This was all bullshit. They’d talked at the party at Tiffany’s and why the hell would he not admit it? For Kimmy’s sake?—what oies was he telling Kimmy? . . . Then again: it was Dream-Devlin who’d told him they’d talked, and Dream-Devlin may never have existed at all . . . He stayed magnanimous, a good beer buzz giving him confidence in the awkward moment, and a little kick out of standing face-to-face with this guy who’d dominated his thoughts when they were younger and not crumpling. Adult Josh doing what Young Josh was unable, despite the current fears that had taken hold of him. He said, “Why’s that?”

“You married Kimmy—my star lawyer,” he said, thumbing towards Kimmy, whose expression now transformed. The warmth went taught. Anxiousness. Or fear . . .

“Or you hired my star wife,” he said with a smile. “But, yeah, I know how lucky I am.”

Devlin was trying to hold his gaze but he wouldn’t let him. Devlin said, “Hey, sorry I busted up your party—I didn’t mean to . . .”

“That’s all right,” he said, “did you want to come in for a beer?”

“Nah,” Devlin said, “I don’t want to intrude. I’m just passing through, anyway, heading back to Kingston . . .”

“You’re welcome to join us. I’d like to have you . . .”

“Thanks, Josh. But I just came for your wife.”

Devlin’s features had hardly changed, but he swore there was a sneer there. That was a direct statement. I came for your wife. Dream-Devlin’s words echoing in his mind right now: Just like you asked me to. Devlin telling him point-blank Oh, yeah, we definitely talked at the party, Joshy. His stomach slithered, and a sliver of anger sliced through him.

He steadied himself, his mind wrestling with those dark thoughts, not wanting to be consumed by them. Defeated by them. Don’t do his work for him, Josh. Don’t make it easy. Kimmy won’t fall for his bullshit. She’s way too smart. He smiled, nodded, looked to his wife. “What did she do?”

“She didn’t tell you?”

I won’t let her tell me because I let you get between us even when you’re not between us. I let your black magic work through me without you ever breaking a sweat casting the spell . . . “She told me a little. We’ve been busy.”

Kimmy smiled and he soaked up strength from it.

Devlin said, “Kimmy did in five business days what was going to take ABM to do in probably twelve. And every day that it went without being resolved on was costing a client money.”

“Who’s ABM?”

“Outside legal,” Devlin said, waving it away like it wasn’t interesting. “I definitely did the right thing hiring her.” Devlin looked Kimmy’s way, and Kimmy’s smile turned to Devlin. It was torture.

He cleared his throat, said, “Did you doubt it?”

“Nah, I don’t make mistakes—not like that, at least. Once I talked to her at Tiff’s, she was all I could think of.”

His hamstrings lost tension, his belly gave birth to a freezing cold stone. It was a message . . .

But it wasn’t. It was all in his own head.

He fumbled for a response, and Kimmy’s face had tightened to a mask of fear; eyes wide, pouting lips pinched to a purse.

Devlin continued: “You remember her in high school, I don’t have to tell you. Perfect marks, so . . . dedicated. Tells me she’s a lawyer now, and I’m always looking for talent.”

Kimmy licked her lower lip, giving Devlin all the attention now, burning her gaze on his. His heart thudded at the awful sight.

Still looking at Kimmy, Devlin said, “Now I know what she’s got . . . She sure showed me . . .”

Kimmy corrected her look, resumed the blankness she used to hide her emotion, said, “It wasn’t a big deal. Just a few meetings.”

“I haven’t seen anyone turn Border Services around like that.”

Kimmy steel-eyed him, nodding.

Josh cleared his throat, said, “I’ll let you talk to her. I don’t want to intrude. Once you guys are done, seriously, Devlin, you should come back to the patio for a beer . . .” The way his heart hammered right now, it took everything he had to manufacture the unperturbed look on his face. And like Young Josh of old, he was looking to bail . . .

“Thanks, Josh,” Devlin said, “Hey, though, don’t go . . .”

“Oh yeah?” Now all he wanted to do was go. He’d done the brave thing, coming out here, getting a close-up look at his wife standing with Devlin. Got a sense that they had a certain camaraderie together, Kimmy and Devlin. Met face-to-face with Devlin. And now a new reality was starting to sink in that he didn’t like. Kimmy had done a good job for Devlin. Devlin was glad he hired her. Things were going well. How much farther would they go . . .?—even if the dark thoughts he had were untrue . . .

Devlin said, “What I have for Kimmy is for both of you. You’ll both enjoy it . . .” Now from an interior suit pocket, Devlin produced a cream-colored envelope, held it aloft so they both could see it. Kimmy reached for it, and Devlin moved it from her grasp.

Kimmy looked anxious again. She said, “Can I just have it, please?”

“Yeah, you can have it—but it’s for both of you,” and now Devlin moved it nearer to Josh.

Josh reached for it, then paused. Devlin said, “Take it,” and jabbed it toward him. “You do the honors, Josh.”

Kimmy said, “Josh, can I have it?”

“Let her take it,” he said, but Devlin persisted. “Josh, take it. You open it and see what’s inside . . .”

And Kimmy persisted, saying, “No, Josh, let me take it . . .”

“Why?” he said, feeling anxious now, the crazy throbbing vibes coming off his wife beginning to work simpatico on his own system. “What’s in it?”

“Open it,” Devlin encouraged, and now Kimmy’s hand retracted, surrendering to the moment, and Josh had the distinct realization that Kimmy feared what was in the envelope. What would be in it that she would be afraid of? What could be in their that would alarm her? A note from Devlin? I fucked her at Tiffany’s party. She was so tight. What else? A photograph? Now his heart pounded. A photograph of Kimmy laid out on her back, her legs open, the picture taken down a muscular body, and from between its legs sprouted an enormous tree branch of a cock. And that tree branch of a cock disappeared inside Kimmy’s tight pussy. The muscular body and huge cock unidentified, but the fact the picture was delivered by Devlin would tell just who it belonged to . . .

When he took the envelope from Devlin, his hand was shaking. “What’s in it?”

“Your reward,” Devlin said. “Open it, and find out . . .”

***

An inventory of salacious items raced through her mind. What would fit in that envelope? He’d taken her panties inside the cargo container. There couldn’t be panties in the envelope . . . What about a picture? Remember when you spread your legs on that pallet of fertilizer and Devlin took a picture? That picture existed. Did he print it out and put it in an envelope to torture you and ruin your marriage? But why would he do that? You’re a good employee. Just made him money today. You’re a new hire. If he did that you couldn’t you make an ethics complaint? But still . . . What about last night? Maybe the bill for the suite. Something like that? Maybe after he’d fucked you into oblivion he snapped a picture of you unconscious on Royal York linen . . . What if it was just something unintentionally devastating? Something that contradicted one of her many lies told directly to Josh’s face . . . Her heart thudded, her temples pounded with her pulse.

“Hey, Josh, here let me,” she said. If she couldn’t get the envelope from Devlin, she could definitely get it from Josh.

But Josh wasn’t hearing, and she wasn’t forceful enough. Josh’s hands were trembling. What was he anxious about? He suspected her. He didn’t trust her. Knew this was going to be bad . . .

“Hey, Josh,” she said again, “let me,” moving toward him. And Josh took a half-step backward, pulling now from the open envelope a sheaf of folded paper. Unfolding it now and reading. She crossed her arms, tightened them against her body. That trembling she saw in Josh’s hands transferring now to her knees. Josh read what was on the sheet, brow lowering as he struggled to comprehend.

I fucked her last night, Josh. I fucked your wife. She went down on me, I made her come. She told me no one makes her come like I do . . .

When Devlin touched her arm she jumped, swiveled at the hips to pull her elbow from his grasp. It only made him smile.

She said, “What does it say?”

Josh said, “I don’t get it . . .”

“Sorry,” Devlin said, “not much of a reward, I guess . . . I need Kimmy to work this weekend.”

Josh showed real disappointment. “This weekend?”

“Tell her what it says . . .”

Josh said, “It’s an itinerary,” looking to her now.

She said, “An itinerary for what?”

“I don’t know . . . like a conference, or . . . There’re mealtimes, and you have to meet with Mr. Rathburn . . .”

Devlin said, “He’s a lawyer. And an advisor . . .”

She looked to Devlin, puzzled. “What for?”

“Sorry—it’s a real shame it’s going to take up most of the weekend since it’s really just a brief meeting. But that’s the way these things go . . .”

Josh was still reading, and he said now, “The Cayman Islands?”

Devlin smiled, looked her way. “Sorry, Kimmy, I need you to work this weekend. Hope that’s cool . . .”

“I don’t want to work this weekend,” she said.

He said, “It’s just a meeting . . .”

“Why? Cayman . . .?”

Devlin said, “You don’t want a bunch of bonuses, trust me. You lose it all in fucking taxes. I need you to take Friday off, head to Cayman, I want you to talk to my advisor. I want you to listen to what he says, tell me if you think he’s treating me fairly . . .”

“Is he Chinese?”

“Asian?—no. He’s black. I think he’s from Trinidad.”

“What do I have to talk to him for?”

“Kimmy—that’s the reward. We use a villa out there. Three days in Cayman, two seats on a private jet. Go out there Friday morning, do whatever, Saturday afternoon you meet with Rathburn. Come back Sunday . . .”

She grimaced, stomach twisting. “Like a vacation?”

“Totally a vacation. All expenses paid. Business expense. No taxes . . .”

“Oh,” she said, the shaking returning. How would she soothe this with Josh? How was she going to explain going away with Devlin for three days on a private jet to a Caribbean villa . . .?

Josh flipped over the paper, saw there was nothing on the other side, then shrugged. “So what’s this got to do with me?”

“It’s for spouses, too. I mean if Kimmy wants to take you . . .”

“Oh,” she said laughing, palming her forehead, relieved.

“What’s up with you two?” Devlin said, eyeing both of them. “I mean, I thought you guys were savvy. Do you not get what I’m saying?”

Josh said, “No, I mean yeah, I think I . . . do.”

“Jesus, you two . . . I just gave you a vacation. Three days, all expenses. Food, drink, spa . . . whatever else you want to do when you’re there, put it on the company card, Kimmy. Three days in the Caymans, most people would shit their pants, maybe even hug me a little. Not a penny out of your pocket, and no extra taxes . . .”

Josh slowly began to smile, and seeing that change in his expression brought her intense feelings of relaxation and happiness. Relief. Her knees sagged, and she felt a burden off her shoulders. Of course she’d be going with Josh . . .

Devlin said, “Josh, if you don’t want to go, I’ll be glad to take her . . .”

Josh’s eyes snapped toward Devlin. There was a brief flash of anger, and she worried what would happen in the next second. But then the anger widened, was replaced by something that she thought might be fear. Poor Josh. Josh had always been put under by this man. And now he was doing it again. She said, “I’m taking Josh with me. Josh, right?—we’re going to go . . .”

“Of course,” he said, practically stammering.

Now she knew what he was thinking. He’d also been thinking she would be going with Devlin. She thought of what he’d said to her in bed last night. How he’d said Tell me you were thinking of his cock, and now how could she not think about that big cock. Josh had put it in her head. It was already there, but Josh would think he’d put it in her head. Josh was now regretting ever mentioning Devlin’s cock to her. It was all too late, anyway . . .

She moved to Josh, slunk her arm around his middle and side-hugged him. Both of them faced Devlin who stood superior over them. She said, “Thank you, Devlin. Thank you—I get it now. It’s very kind . . .”

“Do you not like Cayman?”

“No,” she said, chuckling, resisting the urge to bat at Devlin in front of Josh. “We’ve never been. I want to go. We want to go. We definitely want to go,” she said, tugging on Josh’s waist and getting him to turn to her. His eyes slowly traveled to hers and she looked in his dumbfounded eyes. “Right? Three days in the Cayman Islands. Can you get Friday off?”

“Of course he can get Friday off,” Devlin said to Josh, “You’re at Swanson, right?” Josh said he was, and Devlin said, “Swanson’s great—I know a guy who used to work there.”

“Oh yeah—who?”

“He was a VP. Daniels . . .”

And then Josh said: “Is he a friend of your dad’s?”

There was a coldness in his voice. Completely incongruous with the moment. Josh was mad. Josh was lashing back. Bringing up Devlin’s dad. And Devlin sensed it too. Sensed it and didn’t like it. Some of the command he had of the situation faltered, a ripple in his force field. His confident expression faltered, the tug of his one-sided smile softening for a moment as his eyes pored over Josh, figuring what he would do next. The smile returned, he said, “No. Yeah, he was older. Daniels was a mentor back in biz school.”

“Yeah,” Josh said, “I remember Daniels. He wasn’t in Ajax, he was downtown.”

Devlin studied Josh still, looking bemused. “So can you get Friday off?”

Josh said, “I don’t need help to get Friday off.”

“I wasn’t saying that I’d help.”

She dug her fingertips into Josh’s hip. All the concern she’d had in the moment revolved around her transgression with Devlin. A very selfish and self-centered thought. Now she had to recover. If she was a woman who’d never slept with Devlin, then she would need her husband to smarten up right now. Digging her fingertips into Josh’s waist was the most silent way of hissing his name in his ear and saying Stop it.

Josh nodded, said, “I’ve never been to Cayman. I’ll get the time off . . .”

She squeezed his side. “We’ll go?”

Josh licked his lips, and his eyes showed concern. Concern maybe only she recognized. He was jealous and hurt and trying not to show it. What was he thinking about? Was he thinking about Devlin taking her instead if he couldn’t get Friday off? Worrying about that? Devlin would offer again if Josh couldn’t. Was he worrying about the dirty things he’d asked for last night and how now how he was confronted with it during the day? The man from his dirty thoughts with the incredibly big penis standing right in front of him and giving his wife a gift . . .

Completely unexpected now: A distinct provocative arousal. She tightened her thighs, sucked in her stomach and held her breath, trying to keep awful thoughts at bay. “Okay,” she said, voice tight, “Josh, right?—we’re going to go to Cayman . . .”

Devlin steamrolled ahead: “You guys are going to have a good time. That’s a Michelin star on the itinerary there, and when you go to the spa, Josh, ask for Jenny . . .”

She shot Devlin a baleful look. Devlin showed his palms, laughing. “No, not like that. It’s not like that—I don’t mean, you know, a happy ending . . .”

Josh turned up his nose, not liking Devlin talking about sexual things in front of her.

“Anyway,” Devlin said, unharmed, “both of you pick Jenny and take turns. There’s a Jenny and a Jeremy, if you guys want to stay same-sex that’s on you, everybody’s got their own rules.” Devlin’s smug smiling face stayed on Josh, looking to weigh him down.

Devlin said no more, and though the moment wasn’t that long, it felt thin and tight and dreadful. Both Josh and Devlin willing to exist in a moment of tension looking at each other. She sought quickly to extinguish it, saying, “Okay, Josh, we’re going to Cayman this weekend.”

“We are,” Josh said.

Then to Devlin, she said, “Thank you, Devlin. That’s an amazing gift. We’ll both be very happy to go, and I’m sure we’ll have a great time.”

“It’d be hard not to have a good time,” he said. “Look, if you keep hitting home runs like that, and I have a feeling you will, Kimmy, I can’t just keep throwing down money at your feet. It won’t help you. The government’ll take it. There are other things, other benefits I offer . . .”

Her ribs tightened their grip around her heart, sensing a possible direction for Devlin’s train of thought. Not that he would blurt out something lewd, but that he would insinuate something and crafty and sensitive Josh would pick up on it. So she said to Josh, “Okay, Devlin has to go, Josh, can you give me a minute alone with him before he does?” And regretted it momentarily, seeing a look of hurt in her husband’s eyes. She added softly: “I’ll just be a minute . . .”

Josh found strength, said, “Yup, okay,” raising his chin, narrowing his eyes at her making her feel better. Then to Devlin, Josh said, “Devlin, good to see you,” gave a halfhearted wave at waist level before turning out of her hugging arm and heading down the alley.

Devlin stopped him. “Hey, Josh . . .”

And she wanted to interject again, prepared herself to sever any conversation Devlin might try to pursue.

Josh turned back, and Devlin said, “What’s your number?”

“My phone number?”

Devlin said, “Yeah. We should talk sometime.”

“We should?”

“For sure,” Devlin said earnestly. “Let me buy you lunch or something, go out for a coffee . . . We should probably talk, right?”

The color had drained from Josh’s cheeks. “About what?”

“Do you have a card on you?”

Josh shook his head no.

Devlin said, “We’re both grown up now. We should talk. Wipe the slate. You now . . .”

Josh said, “We should . . .”

Devlin had his phone out now, saying, “What’s your number?” Josh told him, Devlin entered it into his contacts, then from a jacket pocket offered a business card. Josh took it, read it, put it in his pants pocket.

Devlin offered his hand again, and Josh was timid but put his out as well. they shook again. Devlin said, “I’ll be in touch.”

Josh nodded, and she said, “I’ll just be a minute, okay, Josh?”

Josh was speechless and she tightened inside seeing him suffering this way—but at least he was dealing with it. He nodded a good-bye, heeled and looked both ways before crossing the sidewalk.

She watched him return down the alleyway headed to the Dragon’s patio, sunlight falling on his back until he was under the arch. Devlin watched with her, then when Josh was halfway to the patio, Devlin said, “I think that went pretty well.”

She said, “You’re an asshole, you know?”

He laughed, faced her, showed a little-boy-in-trouble face, saying, “What the hell did I do? I thought I was pretty good . . .”

“Why would you invite Josh over for that?”

“Because he’s going to go to Cayman with you . . . Oh shit, Kimmy, did I wreck it for you? If I didn’t call him over, were you going to go with me?”

“Not a chance,” she said.

“You sure? I mean, it is a business trip . . . And I love Cayman . . . And believe me, I know how to have fun when I’m there. You’d definitely have a way better time with me.”

“This is what I’m talking about . . .”

“What? Why’re you mad at me?”

“I’m not mad at you. You just stressed me out.”

He sucked his teeth and made a sound like she was overreacting. “If I slobbered all over Josh’s little knob in front of you, he’s going to think I’m up to something.”

“So you displayed your normal arrogant self.”

Devlin loved it, smiling. “That was for your benefit.”

She stared at his handsome face now aimed toward her, eyes lightly squinted against the brightness of the sun. He smiled, kept his confident gaze on hers.

“You have a point,” she said.

Devlin nodded. “Kimmy’s going to have it all. She must be excited. Good husband, decent guy who worships her, killer job, big pay, trips to Cayman, and other perks . . . oh, and absolute mattress-melting sex with her boss. Oh my God, think how good her life is.”

She shook her head at him, stifling a smile, unable to ignore the ghostly stretch his large size had left her with, like her opening was slowly microscopically stitching itself back together after the pounding that cock had given her. Smug and arrogant as he was, there was a charm there, a dominance and confidence.

“Josh is a good guy, Kimmy—I see why you married him. That guy is going to be faithful, devoted . . .”

“He is. Why do you want to meet with him?”

“It’s not good to meet with him?”

“Why did you take his phone number?”

“Oh, that reminds me,” Devlin said, leaning on his roadster again. “I was thinking about something . . .”

“About what?”

“What you said at the Clockwork yesterday. About me texting Josh or whatever. And how I said I didn’t do it . . . I don’t know if you believe me or not . . .”

“I don’t know who to believe.”

“Wow, that hurts. It occurred to me later—just this morning—I think I told Amy I put my card in your drawer . . .”

Comments

Yeah, Book three is confusing in that it has a scene Wednesday night then skips to Friday. I took the statement Friday morning to be for Thursday. They may have had sex Thursday. The last scene we have is Wednesday though. Confusing. Anyway. Hope the trend holds lol.

CSH

The last time Kimmy and Josh had sex was Thursday for sure (as both the story and Patreon note Josh woke up with a clear mind after a night of great sex). They possibly could have had sex Saturday night, but that would be highly unlikely as that was the night of the fight started by Josh overhearing Kimmy’s phone call with Amy.

Chinookfan72

In the story it’s currently Tuesday August 11th 2020. Book 3 end on Sunday the 9th, Book 4 takes place on August 10th.

Chinookfan72

Isn’t this whole book the next day and night.

Tim ziegler

However the trip goes I’d note that she hasn’t had intercourse with Josh in about a week. ( The book 3 version varies a bit from the Patreon where it’s been even longer, I think.) Curious to see if that keeps up and all Josh gets for a while is handjobs and oral. His recent tendency to quick trigger won’t help him either. That denial doesn’t seem to be on purpose from her but it might be a pattern has begun to emerge as she realizes she can control him through his little battery powered joystick. Kimmy has cut loose with Devlin and gave him what he wanted, I think it’s time she goes all out with Josh so we get a wicked little humiliation scene at Kimmy’s hands.

CSH

So, it looks like Devlin and Amy are in this together. Amy is still trying to open doors for Kimmy. I think Devlin is going to try to use the trip to the Caymans to expose his relationship with Kimmy to Josh. He needs to make his access to Kimmy easier than beach trips and $2k / night hotel stays. Maybe Josh sees what is going on without Kimmy knowing?

MTO

Did anyone catch Devlin saying he was heading back to Kingston?

RCH

James, I think we are on the same page as to the tent conversation. I find your point about how Devlin might realize he could succeed with this strategy of planting the seed to be really interesting and worth discussing. There’s Devlin’s knowledge of Josh’s psychological makeup from high school of course. I think it is the answer. Secondly, it might be that Devlin has done this sort of thing before, maybe he’s seduced other couples the same way. Maybe it’s his thing. Him and Amy, which would explain the collusion. And of course there is the possibility he said something to Devlin either openly or more likely in a challenging way: “yeah she’s mine and you can never have her. Go ahead and try asshole” kind of challenge but I think that’s unlikely. I think Devlin just made it up and lied to Josh so his self-doubt could feed on it.

CSH

Yeah I guess it’s the contradiction between the time element of the story and the developments. I think in real life you need some time between these kinds of things to make them bearable even for someone like Josh. Having Devlin go from non-present to all up in their lives at every moment begins to strain credulity for me. I agree it furthers the story but if there were weeks rather than days separating the episodes it would bother me less.

CSH

That was my think RCH! Toss in the possibility of the lesbian scene leading to a future MFF scene as well and we are cooking with peanut oil!

Chinookfan72

What could possibly be wrong with a good old lesbian scene! Nothing at all!

RCH

This is off topic, but on second read I think you can scratch Hyun’s secret man being Devlin. Meyer was questioning her sexuality so the mystery guy is probably made up to cover for her feelings towards women (Kimmy specifically). I am hoping for more Kimmy and Hyun chapters down the road.. I can see it start as just to girls experimenting and then Kimmy can introduce Hyun to Devlin once it’s established Hyun is on team Kimmy.

Chinookfan72

i know that James, my comment is to show how the tent can be a dream that you were contemplating in the last paragraph of your prior post.

Chinookfan72

Chinook, I already mentioned I understand the logic now, I'm no longer confused about the concept of Amy texting Josh ... I'm going to risk repeating myself again so I'm going to stop talking.

JamesIsAsleep

Welcome back RCH.. to answer your question I personally took that response as just a normal answer to Kimmy’s question.. sure there could be something more there, but if I was Devlin that is how I would answer that question to a colleague.

Chinookfan72

Now that is an idea Tracey if the other person is Amy... or maybe Hyun (is there an angle KT can make Hyun’s secret dude Devlin... probably not, but just including her in case). Kimmy would be more likely to join 1) because she is familar with them 2) she can rationalize it as being okay cause Josh wouldn’t mind her sleeping with another woman 3) Amy, Devlin and Kimmy have been down this road before 4) if its Hyun, We saw the flirting chemistry between them earlier this book so its easy to assume, at least on Hyun’s side, that she’d be down and Kimmy didn’t mind the site of Hyun’s tits so maybe she’s interested in more?

Chinookfan72

The texter doesn’t mention the tent, just that josh asked for Devlin to fuck her, which he didn’t do inside the tent anyway. If Devlin told Amy about “the fingering” (that should be the name of a horror movie btw) it would be logical for Amy to ask how it all came about and Devlin could have told her. Amy is not fond of Josh so it’s not like Devlin would have to be vague and I’ve never met a female who wouldn’t want all the details of some juicy gossip like that.

Chinookfan72

Also good possibility of a "second texter". Just wondering if they were standing on a grassy knoll when they sent them? There is so many things that when on in this chapter! I found it interesting the reaction that Devlin had regarding Papa Stone. There is a good chance that there is some abusive family history in the Stone house. Makes sense most of the big men on campus I knew that has good families were good leaders and roll models. KT will keep us on our toes!

RCH

Been busy with family visiting all weekend, just got time to read the chapter and posts. Did anyone else wonder if there was any significance in Devlin's comments regarding Mr. Rathburn? “Asian?—no. He’s black. I think he’s from Trinidad.”

RCH

Glaucon - you're probably thinking too deep on what I mean by Devlin's taunting behavior being confusing to me, I just mean at philosophical level I cant understand how someone could act like that. Not saying Im confused that people like that exist. The part about "how does the texter know that he talked to Josh in the tent if it just a dream" is me playing through how inconceivable it is to me that someone could go into a tent and let someone know they slept with their wife. If it was a dream, then ok it didnt happen, but then that doesnt explain how the texter knew about that conversation. It's a moot point though because I believe that the tent conversation was real.

JamesIsAsleep

CSH - The idea that Devlin planted the thought in Josh's head is my current belief as well, but I can also conceive of a situation where Devlin uses a morsel of truth that he picked up on when talking to Josh that he wanted Kimmy to sleep around, in order to justify saying to Josh he got what he wanted.

JamesIsAsleep

What if the other person is Amy?

Tracey52

CSH if Devlin isn’t there what is Kimmy going to taunt and tease Josh about that we haven’t already read or will read prior to the trip? It would be just rehashing taunts already said and, I’d think KT would be better off using that book space for something that moves the story forward rather than holds it static. While the taunting/teasing stuff needs to evolve so does Kimmy affair and without Devlin there is no affair. It’s the same logic I had when we discussed the party and wether Devlin was going to crash it... Of course he was. Devlin has got to be included as much, if not more than Josh for the story to move forward.. He is the source of conflict.

Chinookfan72

i’m with you CSH, in the scenario Josh can’t go I’d assume Devlin will surprise her at the air strip. wether or not Josh is there doesn’t really matter to me, except that without Josh there Kimmy is free to do whatever and whenever she wants whereas if Josh is there it’ll be much more structured, so for that reason I’d slightly favor Josh not being there. I do fully expect the lead up to the trip to include a couple more taunting sessions, and Josh not being able to go provides another thing to taunt him about. Josh doesn’t have to be in person for Kimmy to taunt him, she can do it over the phone just as easily as doing it in person, and she can be doing it live as opposed to after the fact if Josh isn’t there. If Josh is there I am all for taunting, but I’d want it to be accomplished via a different method, instead of repeating what happened last time. It certainly crossed my mind that KT might be introducing the associate as another person to bed Kimmy, but the only possible scenario I could see that works is for Kimmy to dabble in some flirting, and start sewing some seeds for later, until Kimmy is further infatuated with Devlin and p/or still has strong feelings for Josh I don’t see her expanding her affair to other suitors.

Chinookfan72

Plus I think you are on target with the questioning of strong and weak as general attributes. Josh is weak before Kimmy because he loves her and has decided to trust her to the end. He’ll regret that of course. He’s also weak before Devlin, perhaps because he conditioned himself to be that way. But he may not be weak in every aspect of his life, he seems to function fine at work and knows what he wants. He’s not a quivering mass of inadequacy except as regards his wife and his bully. At some point, Josh will confront Devlin, probably at the end of this series. Then we will see how weak he is.

CSH

Devlin likes surprises. He hasn’t told Kimmy anything in advance so far. I don’t think he will this time either. If he’s going openly they will find out in the airport or on the plane. If it’s a secret, he’ll be Kimmy’s interview appointment. All this also helps her deal with Josh. If she believes it, it’s easier to convince Josh. If Josh isn’t going she’ll find out when Josh does. Though the option that she goes alone with Devlin is a real one, I think this trip both in the lead up to it and during should cement Kimmy’s taunting of Josh. For this to work effectively here, Josh needs to be along for the ride. We could have a repeat of the hotel scene with Kimmy fucking Devlin and then even more aggressively feeding it to Josh or an equally visceral scene of some sort. But Kimmy tasted that heroin of being bad with Devlin then being nasty to Josh and she’s going to want it again. Also, has anyone considered that Devlin may be offering Kimmy the opportunity to screw other men on the island vacation? He may share her with his associate there. Maybe he’ll plant the idea that Kimmy should taunt Josh by openly flirting with another man. That would be a head trip all it’s own wouldn’t it? I don’t think we know enough about Devlin to know if it fits his character yet.

CSH

It really shows how Josh and Devlin innately understand each other’s vulnerabilities. Josh’s real weakness now is his love for Kimmy and his determination to trust her. Devlin’s weaknesses are less clear so far but Josh seems to know how to hurt him when needed.

CSH

I think the initial conversation where Josh “asks” Devlin to cuckold him never happened. The tent scene did happen and I think it was not just Devlin taunting Josh about Kimmy but intentionally planting the seed in Josh’s mind that he wants to be cuckolded. Devlin understands Josh from before and knows how to get him to do the hard work for him and Josh has done that now. He’s quickly doing the dirty work for Devlin by convincing himself he wants Kimmy to fuck Devlin. It’s possible Devlin has seduced other couples before? The texting could be Devlin or Amy, if it’s really her, they have likely planned the whole thing together from the beginning.

CSH

I’m kinda back and forth on it. Depends on how KT wants to play it. She can just have Kimmy taunt Josh about his fetish and his fears setting the stage for a later trip, or she can have her meet up with Devlin secretly, or maybe only Devlin goes with her. I’m good with all of them I guess.

CSH

in another universe I could see Devlin offering the advisor as a treat...or maybe later on down the road if Kimmy is fully corrupted by Devlin, but at this time in this universe, I don’t see that as viable. Kimmy still has her wits and still loves Josh.

Chinookfan72

If that is the way KT goes it’ll be interesting to see if Kimmy knows Devlin is going before they get to the airport.. And if she does know, does she tell Josh or does she withhold that info until she gets to the airport and play it off like he just showed up and she can’t tell him not to come. Either way I’d imagine she’ll know the night before that Josh can’t go, giving her the opportunity to tease him.. I’d also imagine if Josh can’t go that Kimmy and Josh will schedule nightly phone calls while she is away giving her a chance to tease him even more Friday night, and then perhaps to be late/miss the Saturday call and/or when give the opportunity for Devlin and Kimmy to mess around while Kimmy is on the phone with Josh, but she is passing it off as teasing/phone sex.

Chinookfan72

I like where your head is at Donkatsu... If I may play along.. I’d swap the Friday morning packing with Thursday night packing... flight is Friday morning so not sure she’d have time to pack morning of... Oh and it’s fairly late Thursday as Devlin had her working late as she had to prep for the advisor meeting with Devlin after work ( yes josh the meeting with Devlin took 3 hours, i’m not going into that meeting in the Cayman’s without knowing the back stories and what Devlin wants me to be looking out for).. Kimmy, with another batch of Devlin’s Deep Secret swimming in her uterus, steps closer to Josh and starts stroking his cock through his pants... “oh Joshy, are you upset because you were worried I couldn’t keep myself off of Devlin’s much bigger cock? Don’t worry, I was a good girl, but I have to admit it did cross my mind”. Kimmy unbuttons Josh’s pants and unzips them, allowing them to hit the floor. “Here let me show you how good of a girl I can be, while I tell you what I was thinking about during my meeting this evening.” Kimmy grabs Josh’s cock again and starts stroking profusely... That leaves Wednesday for the shopping spree, which she invites Hyun on so Hyun can help her pick out stuff and see her try it on (and see Kimmy’s naked body this time.)

Chinookfan72

To back up CSH with regard to Kimmy's desire to twist the knife in Josh at least a little, as well as the frisson she derives from Devlin's innuendos, we probably want to figure out when Kimmy will know that Devlin is going to Cayman, too, and when she will know that Josh is going to be called in for "important client meetings" on Friday.

Donkatsu

Yup looks like Devlin’s Achilles heel was exposed. What does it mean, and what importance will it have later in the story.. not sure.. One thing I am sure of is pops is still the president of the company so Kimmy being able to solve this problem as quickly as she did probably means more to Devlin than the money aspect since pops would be pissed about the screw up.

Chinookfan72

Gee, Tuesday night already. There is just barely enough time for Kimmy to indulge herself in a shopping orgy to fit herself out for the trip to the Caymans – a couple of dental floss bikinis, a backless minidress, a pair of CFM sandals, new panties (only necessary if Josh is along). Too bad Josh will not be the first to see her wear them. He may be able to describe them to Karina when they have dinner on Saturday night after he sees them going into Kimmy’s suitcase on Friday morning, right after the call from work about an important client meeting in TO late Friday afternoon.

Donkatsu

Just like this party Devlin has to be involved.. unless KT spends only a chapter or two on the vacation. Given the emphasis KT has put on the trip so far and it’s likely importance through the rest of this book, there is no way KT is spending that much time on something she’ll just gloss over in the next book in a couple of chapters. This story is about a loving wife who is having an affair, so the other man is going to have to be involved if we are talking about a trip that, based on the number of days that pass in a book, will be at least half a book.

Chinookfan72

I'm not sure I understand what you mean then :P

Glaucon

Well to be clear, I am saying I dont understand it. Not the fact of it, but the concept.

JamesIsAsleep

I think it's just character development at this point tbh. Everyone has feelings. If we wanted to play psychoanalyst, it might even feed into Devlin's bullying motivation – it’s a stereotype that bullies are often perpetuating being bullied themselves. It could be that Devlin deep down feels inadequate compared to his dad (who might be more “self-made”), and this feeling drives him to belittle and control others to make himself feel more powerful.

Glaucon

Re Devlin going into the tent to taunt Josh at all – that part I have no confusion over. He enjoys it. He derives an ego boost from holding power over Josh, from making himself feel big at other’s expense. This whole thing is way better for him BECAUSE he’s making Kimmy cheat on someone. He’s constantly bringing Josh up in bed with Kimmy, making her say negative things about him, and he’s especially turned on when Kimmy betrays Josh in extra ways. So, Devlin went into the tent to taunt Josh because Devlin gets off on taunting Josh.

Glaucon

Glaucon - caught that too, not sure what to do with it yet so I didnt bring it up.

JamesIsAsleep

Something caught my eye this chapter. In the context of earlier discussion about “strong” Devlin and “weak” Josh, I talked about believing that simplifying a person as “weak” or “strong” is not useful. For example, most of Devlin’s apparent sources of “strength” are external things that he didn’t really “earn” in any meaningful way. In this chapter it’s pretty obvious that Devlin is sensitive/defensive about his father and even the subtlest implication that Devlin’s status and power derives from someone other than Devlin himself, visibly reacting to even a brief mention of Papa Stone.

Glaucon

Right? I fail to understand why Devlin would even go to the tent to let Josh know he fucked Kimmy in addition to that. If it was just a dream then, ok, but then how does the texter know about that concept?

JamesIsAsleep

Even a blind squirrel right? I do love the possibilities though. Think Devlin will show? Or maybe a setup for future “business” trip?

Wess

Speaking of, that angle always puzzled me - Josh thinks multiple times about how that's never been his fantasy in the past - where is that coming from with Devlin? I struggle to think how Devlin fully making it up helps Devlin or makes him feel more powerful in any way.

Glaucon

Hmm, ok yeah, thanks again Glaucon. I guess it's just hard for me to get into that detail of the story and my bias is preventing me to think about it more critically.

JamesIsAsleep

An alternative theory: maybe Josh was telling everybody at the party that he wanted someone to sleep with Kimmy. Maybe that's just what Josh does when he gets blackout drunk? Confess how he wants Kimmy to sleep with someone else, lol.

JamesIsAsleep

In short, Devlin told Amy. We know for sure that Amy wants Kimmy and Devlin fucking (her glee when Kimmy admits it to her, her goading Kimmy about Devlin’s abilities and derision over Josh’s dick size at the party, completely stonewalling/gaslighting Josh when they met up for coffee, treating him dismissively). Amy even tried to have a threesome with Kimmy and Devlin a long time ago (might be angling for a reschedule)! Devlin is already saying in this chapter that he told Amy he left his business card in a specific drawer at Kimmy's apartment. Think about that – what kind of conversation were they having where this would come up, if they weren’t specifically talking about Devlin’s ongoing fun with Kimmy? And if Amy and Devlin are already talking about Devlin’s games with Kimmy (which Amy enjoys), I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to imagine he also mentioned (even in passing) his games with Josh.

Glaucon

More 'Second Texter' talk, which probably is better described as 'Second Taunter' lol, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the opening scene and the prospect that Amy is the one texting Josh. Remember how the opening scene is ostensibly for Devlin to inform Josh that he carried out Josh's request to fuck Kimmy. How are people making sense of the texts from Devlin reiterating that, "You said you wanted this" essentially? Did Amy overhear this conversation? Did Devlin tell Amy about it? That's specifically why I think the opening scene and texts are linked in my mind. That discussion about Josh wanting Devlin to have sex with Kimmy that "Devlin" texted is a detail that carried over from the original conversation. So how does Amy get involved in this to that level of specificity?

JamesIsAsleep

Hey Wess, how about that two tickets to paradise guess? Talk about getting it right.

CSH

Given that KT writes Devlin as seeming "genuinely surprised" to learn that someone was texting Josh claiming to be him, it feels to me like it's independent Amy running a game for her own amusement/purposes. We do know she's talking to Devlin too, and likely encouraging him as well. Interestingly enough, she's the only character speaking with all three mains, and apparently enjoying all their respective roles in the drama (which does make her feel like a kind of instigator).

Glaucon

Instigator Amy or Collaborator Amy?

BNR

thanks Wess, I like your interpretation better than what I was going for. I was just intending for some word play with Kimmy and Josh’s last name. Mud wrestling is better for sure!

Chinookfan72

Chinook - just wanted to give you credit for your comment about muddying the Waters. Virtual metaphorical mud wresting.

Wess

I also think that the advisor may just be made up and it’s a way for Devlin to meet her. Or maybe he’s real and Devlin wants to offer him to Kimmy as a treat? More likely he’s fake just like the business meeting she just had.

CSH

Glauc that was the part I was referencing in book 2.. your interpretation is most likely right, however when I read that I also interpret it as Josh pulling out his phone with the intention of blocking the number. However before actually pulling the trigger he delays it until after breakfast. Kind of like how some times I walk into a my office so I could do some work, but once I’m in there I make excuses to procrastinate. here is the reference in book 3. That I was talking about. “Here’s the thing: the texts from Devlin had been deleted from his phone. The contact deleted as well.” this could be interpreted as deleted and blocked being synonyms, but it could also be KT leaving some ambiguity in the story so she isn’t painted into a corner. if I’m placing odds I’d lean heavily towards the number being blocked, but I also wouldn’t put the probability at 100% that it is.

Chinookfan72

The part where Kimmy gets excited imagining Josh thinking about Devlin is a key moment in my opinion. Kimmy definitely has some incipient sadism going on regarding Josh. That’s going to set up some wicked humiliation scenes between Kimmy and Josh. The story doesn’t even need Devlin in it to push that forward much. Even if he doesn’t end up on the island with them, and I hope he doesn’t, he’ll still be there in their minds. A weekend alone with Kimmy taunting Josh about Devlin will condition him to want it even more and strangely make him more confident it’s all in his head. “She moved to Josh, slunk her arm around his middle and side-hugged him. Both of them faced Devlin who stood superior over them.” This Is an interesting way to approach the power dynamic of cuckold stories. Lots of promises here.

CSH

Thanks, Glaucon!

JamesIsAsleep

My take on the tent scene: Josh never asked Devlin to cuckold him. Devlin lied about that and Josh was too drunk to remember. Devlin planted the thought in Josh’s head in the tent scene and got Josh to do the work for him. The tent scene is real and Josh’s disbelieving it just shows his ability to lie to himself.

CSH

“He snapped the waistband of his underwear, eyeing Kimmy still, made his way to the kitchen, pulling out his phone so he could block the number Devlin’d texted him from. Behind him in the bed he’d left his wife sleeping off a wonderful night of sex; naked, satisfied, sleeping. He was going to be her man. But first he needed a big breakfast because he was fucking starving.” And then it’s a chapter break and it’s two days later, and he never receives a text again after this. I think it's pretty clear he blocked the contact – There’s really no implication that anything else happened.

Glaucon

“and how now how he was confronted with it during the day?“

CSH

Thanks, Chinook, that must be why I forgot about the talk about whether he blocked the number or not ... the number could still contact him anyways.

JamesIsAsleep

It could also be as Glauc said he blocked the number, but the waters are muddied on if he actually blocked it or just deleted it. Book 2 says he pulls out his phone so he could block the number, but doesn’t actually say he went through with it. Book 3 says the message and contact were deleted. A deleted contact’s texts will still show up, blocked texts won’t so it’s not 100% clear on which method Josh did.

Chinookfan72

Amy’s texts stopped because she ran out of info is what makes most sense to me.. Kimmy and Amy have only talked twice since the reunion, once after Josh visited her in TO and once two days ago so she didn’t have knowledge of the other events until very recently, and there is too much time from when they happened until she found out so I think the thrill of the taunt isn’t there for Amy on those things.. Especially when she knows About Kimmy’s Royal York plans, however it’s doubtful after This conversation that Kimmy will divulge true details about what happened.. however, if Kimmy is smart she could set a trap for Amy and give false information about the Royal York stuff in hopes she texts Josh so she can figure it out one way or another.

Chinookfan72

Oh yeah ... I'm so bad at retaining this story!!

JamesIsAsleep

The texts stopped because Josh blocked the number :P

Glaucon

My current operating theory on the texts stopping is that it's not a game anymore to Devlin, he's really in this for Kimmy now. But i dont know how well that stands ...

JamesIsAsleep

Yeah, I dont know how to make sense of the texts stopping. Counter thought though, do you think Amy would have kept asking Kimmy for details to fuel her game? Why would Amy stop the texts?

JamesIsAsleep

Another thing about the texts if it was Devlin who sent them why would he stop after the one time? I’d imagine Devlin would have texted Josh about the car and dock incidents as well. Makes more sense it was a second sender and Devlin hasn’t been keeping Amy up to speed on the happenings since so she can’t text any more.

Chinookfan72

You're definitely meant to connect the opening scene with the texts, that's how it's framed. It's just these later scenes (first the hotel bar, now this) that appear to be heavily implying it was actually Amy the whole time.

Glaucon

Ok, got it, I think i get it more now. I just thought it was weird how open Devlin was about keeping Josh so inappropriately informed of the fact he had sex with Kimmy and was going to do it again (because afterall that is what Josh asked him to do) so it still doesnt quite make sense that he would just sever all communication with him after the tent scene, especially after being so brazen. It makes more sense to me that he enjoys taunting ever since the opening scene, that's why I connect the opening scene with the texts.

JamesIsAsleep

Why is Amy doing this? Because she enjoys it, probably (think Chelsea in Chelsea Hates Libby). She certainly seemed breathlessly excited and gleeful in her phone convo with Kimmy, and didn't seem to respect or care about Josh too much in the one in-person scene they had together. Also trying to get Kimmy to cheat in the first place and talking about how Josh couldn't possibly be as good in the sack as Devlin.

Glaucon

I reread the opening scene again, and realize I may have been reading into the "I'll be seeing you" open ended comment from Devlin as he was leaving the tent (along with the promise that he was going to continue pursuing her) as him saying he was going to keep him on top of everything that he and Kimmy did, sort of like what the tent scene represented to begin with, Devlin letting Josh know he did what Josh asked him to do. So if that is wrong and Devlin just felt like keeping Josh informed of progress he made with Kimmy the one time, then why did Amy carry the torch after that?

JamesIsAsleep

Yeah the dream and the second texter are separate things. As for the dream I think she asked it because many of us (including myself) assumed what happened in the tent to be actually happening.. however the opening line of book 1 is... The dream began as though he were waking . . . Which upon reflection could mean that what happened in tent was all a dream... Whether or not the tent is real or not has nothing to do with the texts. The texts were all about the fingering in the apartment so if Devlin told Amy about the encounter she could have easily sent the texts using a burner phone. That being said, I agree with Glauc on what the most likely scenario is.

Chinookfan72

I think the scenario that makes the most sense is the tent scene happened, Devlin told Amy about it, Amy is the texter.

Glaucon

On why KT asked us all about whether the first scene was a dream, I half wonder if she isnt just introducing a red herring. The surreality of the whole experience already made Josh doubtful of everything including reality itself, so I guess I am of the mind that she was fanning that flame of a thought. I dont know what types of things KT is into, but I imagine that has to be fun for her. So to the second texters, how does Amy play into this? Was Josh asleep and Amy was talking to him in a half conscious state, and her status as an Alpha female was manifested as Devlin in his dream state and when she realized it, she played it up? When he reached out to touch Devlin's massive junk was that Amy making him grab a leftover sausage from the firepit, and the smell of Kimmy on his fingers afterwards just a memory of old times? I just cant wrap my head around the theory.

JamesIsAsleep

What kind of Chinese name is "Zapruder", for Amy?

Donkatsu

Fantastic chapter KT.. That went just about as I expected (only thing I wasn’t counting on was Josh actually being included in the trip), but still I was on the edge of my seat throughout... For the story it’s probably better Josh is included now as it gives Devlin more opportunity to fuck him over later, whether it be Devlin calling in a favor at Swanson to deny his PTO request, or to somehow ruin the vacation for Josh while Josh is on the island... Either way can’t wait for the next chapter as always.

Chinookfan72

here is my thinking on your questions... 1) yes she is wearing panties, it seems she didn’t have any run ins with Devlin today other than this encounter so I very much doubt she’d be sans panties.. unless she normally goes without while talking to bureaucrats.. 2) and 3)... These are interesting, I can see a case where Devlin calls in a favor with his contact at Swanson to require Josh to work Friday, thus removing his ability to go. Then again, I can also see Josh going, but the lawyer doesn’t exist, when Kimmy shows up Devlin will be there.. Or perhaps a third scenario where Josh is able to attended, but Devlin just shows up and creates an emergency that only Kimmy can solve, thus removing her from the vacation for a night.. My thinking is this book will lead up to the trip, and book 6 will be the trip.. So i’m thinking Devlin will somehow find away to get inside Kimmy before the trip, not sure how, but I’m guessing Kimmy will need to prep for the meeting she is going to and only Devlin can help her.

Chinookfan72

agree on all accounts the second texter theory certainly grew some legs this chapter.

Chinookfan72

The significance would be related to the sub-plot of the early texts Josh received taunting him. Initially, it was framed to imply those texts were from Devlin, and that went as the unchallenged assumption. At the hotel bar, as Devlin references in this chapter, he denies any knowledge of those texts. There was some debate in the comments about what that meant. Some people thought there was no way the texts could be from anyone other than Devlin because the texter knew about the business card in their apartment.

Glaucon

Enquiring minds want to know: (1) is Kimmy wearing panties at this moment? (2) what will happen to Josh’s schedule to nix the trip for him ? And (3) how will Devlin get on the itin and will he let Josh know? Great lead in to some real gut turners for Josh. Kimmy will hone her gaslighting skill this week, and she will board the plane with Devlin inside her with or without Josh in the other seat.

Donkatsu

"Jesus you two ... what's with you, I thought you were savvy" KT i hate sounding like such a broken record reacting to these stories, but god dammit you are the best fucking writer in this genre. This whole moment was dripping with tension, every head tilt is meant to be scrutinized and interpreted, at least it has to be considered before one continues to the next sentence ... every action is a move in a chess game. I love every word of this update. Devlin might be a bit outlandish, but he is a fantastic KT bad guy. Josh was great, he seemed a little too out of control in this one, but pretty strong. Kimmy is definitely torn between a love and sympathy for Josh and a burning lust for the power of Devlin. I love thinking she gets spellbound looking at Devlin, yet jumps to the aid of her husband when she knows his pride is hurt. Complicated! Anyone mind reminding me about the significance of Devlin telling Amy about leaving the card behind? I thought Amy knew about Devlin and her anyways ... or maybe she only knows about the Reunion?

JamesIsAsleep

Killjoy typo patrol – “Well, not literally bigger” (missing concluding punctuation) “what oies was he telling Kimmy?” “If he did that you couldn’t you make an ethics complaint?”

Glaucon

Great chapter, KT! Like I’d speculated earlier, it seems like Amy’s set up to be more of a provocateur in the whole thing and a likely texting culprit, especially given how pro-infidelity she was in her talks with Kimmy.

Glaucon
