My films are made digitally (mostly). Usually, the final designs, as well as the animation, are both made entirely in the computer since the animation methods impact the design. But when I hit a mental roadblock, I’ll often turn to paper and rapidly fire out scribbly ideas until a way forward opens up, at which point I will throw down the sketchbook and go back to the computer. The sketchbook usually doesn’t get the dignity of containing anything close to a final design, and because I work alone, nobody else but me needs to even understand what the drawings are. So rather than “concept art”, what you usually end up with is illegible lunatic scratchings, collecting in the corners of undated sketchbooks. If you were flicking through one of my sketchbooks and saw a bunch for a film you’d never seen, they’d probably be the least notable drawings in the book. But I think once you’ve seen the final product, they take on a lot more meaning. They’re like records of old private conversations with myself, and you can see the moments where I first mumbled all these ideas that turned into film.
ANYWAY! I went through and scanned all of THOSE drawings from an old sketchbook. Evidently, one from when I was halfway through Double King! The drawings here span from the caterpillar kingdom scene to the war machine scene. The rest of the Double King sketches must be hiding in other sketchbooks, but I’ll scan those as well at some point! I’ve also attached the scans to this post as a PDF, if you want a tidier way to download them all.
