EGSM 22: Soft at heart (Romcoms)

Welcome to the first episode of season 2 of Enthusigasm! With Valentine's Day just round the corner, we thought we'd start with a seasonal topic: romantic comedies.

Helen, Karim, Maddy and Morgan talk about the role of class in romance, films from Hollywood's Golden Age, and why Venom is a romcom.

Comments

Very much agree that the gratuitous meanness/humiliation in movies and television is terrible to watch and just a wasteful blight on society.

Some of my favourite romcoms: Junior French Kiss Kate and Leopold Venom 2 North & South

I saw " Hollywood's Golden Age" in the description and immediately thought of Overinvested so it was a nice surprise to see Morgan Leigh Davies here ^^

1) The "pretend to be my bae for my family thing" trope. Does anyone actually do that? Is that a real thing? 2) Romancing the Stone was my favorite as a kid, but I haven't seen it in years. Anyone seen it recently? Does it hold up? 3) My husband introduced me to About Time this past year, and it's just utterly sweet and sad at the same time. But it's as much a father and son movie as a romcom. 4) Joe vs the Volcano is my all time favorite romcom. 5) Mr. and Mrs. Smith: romcom or not?

LOVE Bringing Up Baby and Holiday. They are the best! If you like those, you should check out Connie Willis's short stories and To Say Nothing of the Dog. She is a SF writer who loves screwball comedies. My favorite rom-com, which everyone either loves or hates, is Only You with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. That's right, Tony Stark and Aunt May. I think I like it so much because it has a unique premise and it happens in Italy.

Venom is ABSOLUTELY a romcom and I shall join you all defending that hill upon which we shall surely meet our demise!

Mēs esam flinči, šī ir mūsu dziesma, mēs kādu laiku ceļosim laikā

I just have to pop in to give a shout-out to Carrie Fisher in When Harry Met Sally, hands down one of the funniest performances ever
