Historic Havoc
Added 2023-06-19 15:00:10 +0000 UTCHi folks,
Wishing you the very best for the coming week from everyone at Rusty Towers!
In honour of our bonus content this week, the theme of this week’s newsletter is History! So, as well as celebrating our current historical comedy podcast, Cry Havoc! Ask Questions Later, we’ll also be sharing some of our other favourite historic fiction we’ve worked on over the years. With the summer holidays coming up (at least here in the UK), it’s a great time to find a new podcast to dig into.
- Trice Forgotten – our piratical adventure on the seven seas. Captain Alestes doesn’t really want a crew – besides her adoptive father, Baker – but somehow as she sails from port to port looking for work, instead a mismatched crew finds her. Alestes may be able to escape the clutches of British soldiers, hot on the trail of stowaway Siva, but she can’t escape her past. Knights and Nobles can listen to Trice Forgotten ad-free here on Patreon. If you have already enjoyed Trice Forgotten, we also have several episodes of our behind-the-scenes series, Below Decks, which gives further historical context to the story.
- Outliers – Made in association with Historic Royal Palaces, Outliers is our historic fiction anthology featuring the work of award-winning authors and podcast creators, including David K Barnes, Jonathan Sims, Gabriel Urbina and more. Each episode showcases the life of someone living in and around some of the UKs most opulent buildings, but who are often forgotten by history. If you’re not sure where to start, why not check out For King and Country by Jonathan Sims, or Mehmet and the Wild Boy by David K Barnes.
- If you like history, but don’t fancy fiction, why not check out these episodes of Enthusigasm, where Helen and guests from across podcasting and new media chat about historical topics:
- EGSM 9: Yarrr! (Pirates), featuring Helen Gould, Fay Roberts, Jeremy Enfinger and Nemo Martin
- EGSM 26: Sing, O muse... (Mythology), featuring Helen Gould, Becky Annison, Elizabeth Moffatt, Jon Ware & Muna Hussen
- EGSM 28: Weird and bewigged (Period drama shows), Helen Gould, Fay Roberts, Imogen Harris, Nemo Martin and Rafaella Marcus
- EGSM 39: Merely players (Shakespeare), Helen Gould, Grace Knight, Imogen Harris, Jonathan Sims & Maddy Searle
In this week’s episode of Cry Havoc! Ask Questions Later, Charmian takes centre stage as she makes friends and enemies on the streets of Rome. Meanwhile, Octavia starts to work on her play.
Meanwhile, our Friday bonus content is episode 3 of our Backstage series. This week host Lowri is joined by creator David K Barnes, director Amani Zardoe and historical consultant and expert on all things Ancient Rome, Dr. Emma Southon. They’ll be discussing exactly how historical consultancy works during the production of a show, the types of weird and wonderful questions that David and Amani sent her and how historically accurate the show actually is.
Here is our full schedule for this week:

ROME 5 – Taking Sides (Patreon) (4pm BST)
Thursday 22nd June
