In general, it’s very Germanic based in regards to inspiration. Many of the names can be tackled from that angle. A few don’t translate well to Japanese pronunciation, so when they take German name, translate to Japanese, and then do English pronunciation based on the Japanese, some of them get fuzzy. A good example is a cadet Berthold Hoover. In Japanese it sounds more like Ber-tolta Hoova. So when they bring it back into English, the VAs go off the Japanese and not the source name. Spelling gets lost in translation a bit sometimes too. I think just approach it with the mindset of “European Medieval” era, and how Western European names would be pronounced. Doesn’t apply to all of course but to most. Take captain Erwin. It is most commonly spelled Erwin, I believe the Japanese pronounce it how we would phonetically (Er-win, or Er-ween), but in the English dub, they pronounce it Irvin. 🤷♀️🙃
