How to fix issues with Tales of Rein Ravine (on Steam)

Public post - this post will be updated if and when more issues arise, or new solutions are found.

List of issues explained in this post

1. Black screen
2. D3D related errors
3. Failed to open descriptor file
4. Game not saving / Error: Cannot find save file
5. Game is laggy
6. Rider's legs don't work

1. Screen goes black after pressing Play

This problem is still under investigation, but as of now; my best guess is that this problem has do with the the computer parts, mainly graphics card, taking too long to render the game.

Some things you can try:

If you have tried everything and the issue remains, this might mean that the computer is not powerful enough to run the game, at least in its current state. Better performance optimization will be added in the future, so keep an eye on the updates - after a newer update the game might start working for you.

2. D3D Related Errors

Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost?
A D3D11-compatible GPU is required to run the engine?

If you got this error, update your graphics card drivers.

First you need to know the manufacturer of your graphics card. Press Windows button, type "dxdiag" to the search bar, and open the app with a blue-yellow icon. Then go to "Display" tab - there is the manufacturer of the graphics card.

Most manufacturers have automatic apps for updating drivers. If your manufacturer is...
NVIDIA, install THIS
Intel, install THIS
AMD, install THIS

Then follow the app's instructions for updating the drivers.

If after updating, the issue is still there, I have bad news. This likely means that your graphics card is not suitable for the game.

3. Failed to open descriptor file

If you are getting this error, I have bad news.

The exact cause of this error is unknown, and no specific fix exists. The error typically appears on computers with weak components for gaming, and very likely means that the computer is not suitable for running the engine. There are still a couple of things you can try:

4. Game does not save progress / got "ERROR: Cannot find save file"

This error usually indicates that something in your save file is corrupted.

The first thing you should try is to simply quit the game and open it again. If you cannot access the quit button, press ALT + F4 (force quits the app).

If reopening doesn't fix it, then sadly the only way to go is by deleting the corrupted save file, meaning all your progress will be lost. Locate the save file on your computer (TUTORIAL) and delete it. Note that the save file name for the official game is torr_slot1.sav.

In case deleting the save file does not work either, send a message here or on Instagram DMs.

5. Game is laggy, or the reins are stretchy.

Go to Settings, choose the Graphics tab, and press a button that says FPS.

If the FPS is lower than 30, you need to lower graphics quality. Also set Anti-Aliasing to either Fast or Off. To improve performance, close all other apps, and if you're playing on a laptop, plug it in.

If the FPS is still below 30, put Shadow quality to "No shadows", and lower the screen percentage or resolution. Note, that the resolution setting only works when the screen is set to Windowed (set Screen Style to "Windowed" and press F11).

If you have tried everything and the FPS remains low, this likely means that your computer is not powerful enough to run the game, at least in its current state. More performance optimization is planned for the future though, so keep an eye on the updates - after a newer update the game might start working for you.

6. Rider's legs don't work / Legs only work sometimes

Firstly, are you playing on a laptop? Laptop trackpads usually don't allow you to simultaneously press both left and right buttons. You need a mouse, with working left and right, to play.

If you have issues despite playing with a mouse, you are likely dealing with a bug where the mouse stops responding when the (invisible) cursor hits the edges of the screen. Basically the mouse can glitch out of the game screen, if you move the camera a lot. This bug is under investigation and will hopefully be fixed in a later update.

What may help is trying out the different Screen Styles in the settings. If not, then what you can do for now, is avoid turning the camera a lot when riding.

Venla

i can't play even though i paid ? help me please !!

emma

you need to take lessons to unlock more horses. since there are only three lessons with blaze and tati so far, we can only ride them.

pika

Atm it works at my PC idk if it's js at mine but mby pull the blue marked part in a new tab

Poetry

How do you play with other horses? Is that an option or still waiting to be released?

Emma Helms

I canโ€™t get to the stables, I click the Cherry peak poster and it says the same line over and over, Iโ€™ve interacted with everything

Ashley Ravenfield

The intel link is not working

Poppy42

When will come the jumping lessons and the competitions because i know that first comes more dressages

IT WORK

After the newest update, you can choose the exact dialogue when interacting with the items, by using the mouse scroll wheel. You need to choose the dialogue that specifically talks about how to get to the stable.

I have a little update! I truly donโ€™t know what I did, but I tried the game today and it actually loaded in this time!! When playing the game it went from 120 to about 90FPS. However, after going to the bus stop to move to the equestrian center, it crashed back down to 1.45 FPS and just never recovered :,) that has only happened once, though. When I try to relaunch the game, it just crashes again after I press play. I wonder if it just has something to do with loading into new locations? Iโ€™m not sure!

SourMads

I cannot play the game because it wont let me get on the bus even after i look at every billboard poster

David Maxfield

thankfully the only 'issue' i'm having that the fps drops to the low 30s sometimes, so nothing detremental, but just wanted to come on here and say that posts like these are so incredibly helpful as asort of checklist for people like me (who only know the absolute minimum about their computer/laptop lol)

Maria Plate

Hi everyone, I just updated my driver and did everything in the list to make my game run. I turned in fps and it was over 70 fps. I bought this computer new and have downloaded the old version and the new version but my screen is still black!! It says the game crashed after I have let it load. Any solutions?? Or if anyone knows how to fix this problem please share!! Thank you

Em

Also if changing the screen style doesn't help, then you just have to avoid turning the camera a lot when riding, for now. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ This bug will hopefully be fixed in a later update.

Tales of Rein Ravine

ah I see, thanks! I'll try to see that until the problem is solved ๐Ÿ˜

Elna

I'm aware of an issue where on some monitors, the mouse stops responding when the (invisible) cursor is at the edges of the screen. Basically the mouse glitches out of the game window. One thing you could try is go to settings and test the different screen styles (windowed etc).

Tales of Rein Ravine

I play on a laptop with a functional Logitech mouse, but I have a lot of problems with the leg action... it doesn't always work, like 1 time out of 3 or 2.

Elna

hi i have around 40-50fps on the lowest setting and today when i tried the game every time after play it says fatal error. do you have anyway to fix this? and also thank you for the guide to get your fps higher, ive watched peoples lives and your game looks so good

isla

One thing you could try is to verify the game files on Steam, and delete and reinstall the game. The Intel driver warning is a known issue with the unreal engine version that TORR currently uses, if you have already installed a newer driver then you can ignore the warning. It is however definitely very strange to go from 120 fps to crashing the game.. ๐Ÿค”

Tales of Rein Ravine

Update: my FPS is actually around 120 when I launch the gameโ€ฆ but the moment I press play it drops to 2.45 and doesnโ€™t recover๐Ÿ˜“ Not sure what to do. And with the whole โ€œintel graphicsโ€ error, my graphics that is installed says itโ€™s HIGHER than the recommended version. The error I get states, โ€œinstalled: 31.0.101.2125โ€ โ€œRecommended: 30.0.101.1340.โ€ At least, I think thatโ€™s how that works? But I donโ€™t know๐Ÿ˜…

SourMads

I turned it off in game. Iโ€™ll try to go and turn off my own graphics card settings! Iโ€™ll keep you updated, I just dont really know how to do that๐Ÿ˜…

SourMads

Do you mean the in-game Vertical Sync setting or in the graphics card's own settings?

Tales of Rein Ravine

I tried to follow your instructions and turned off the vertical sync. However, it did the same thing where it unfortunately dropped to 2.41 FPS after just being at 60. I donโ€™t know why my computer is having such trouble๐Ÿ˜“

SourMads

Hmm, that is very strange. It's normal that after pressing Play, the game can drop to a very low fps for a few seconds but it should recover as soon as the level has been loaded. One thing that comes to my mind is a couple of reports where players said they had weird fps drops and it was fixed by playing with the graphics card's own settings, for example turning off its built-in Vertical Sync. However given that you are getting the driver warning message (Warning: Known issues...) I think you have an integrated graphics card?

Tales of Rein Ravine

Hello! The game hasn't worked at all for me, unfortunately :,) I updated everything as instructed, and I still get the "graphics intel" error. I followed the settings, and my FPS is above 60 in settings. However, when I press start, my game after a minute or so drops to 1-2FPS. I also have a picture of my graphics saying I'm all up to date with the link you sent me, do you have any recommendations? I'm not sure what else to do, but I can play many games on this computer :,)

SourMads

Yeah in the game you need to press jump a bit earlier than when the horse would start a jump in real life, since the jumping animation needs time to blend in, if that makes sense. Though if you set the jumping difficulty to Easy it should be pretty forgiving with the timing.

Tales of Rein Ravine

Yes!

Tales of Rein Ravine

Will there eventually also be a setting to turn off the flashing highlight on the horse's leg? ๐Ÿคฉ

Keegan Hayes

Thank you for this!! I finally figured out the striding for jumps as well. It was confusing for me as being a newbie to jumping strides but a rider I thought the back feet would need to be ready and prepared to push off the ground but in the game I can get the jump by the front feet striking the ground then asking jump. So far thatโ€™s working for me on Tati. Now that I think about it, it does rather make sense. After all the front feet have to strike for the back to prepare๐Ÿ˜…. Thank you for putting so much effort and thought on the game!!
