Compromise-d? AD FREE

One-hundred percent, one-hundred percent of the time; that's the goal.  Except when it's not.  There are times and circumstances where a client approaches us with seemingly conflicting desires; conserve the artwork, but not too much, use the best materials but not if they're expensive, etc...  And it's in this space of compromise that we must decide if these restrictions or concessions are going to result in a beautiful balance of compromise or a pursuit and result that are compromised.

I would have enjoyed seeing what is involved in stretching an oval canvas--or was it octagonal? Some painstaking strip-lining, I suppose. The compromise made in regard to the frame strikes me as minor, since the mere cleaning of it produced such a remarkable result.

Lovely restoration, enjoyed seeing some frame work as been a very long time since last saw any framing work. Another question the person was painted on what appeared to be a straight black background. Was this done back in the day as an inexpensive fill in, ie to make it like he was in a garden or in front of a house, would have required a lot more time and skill by the painter. So was the matt / plain colored background cost savings? Or was there some other motivation / or trend behind this?
