Real ID is just the name given to your drivers license or ID where you provided paperwork to verify who you are beyond that of a regular license. When you get your license in CA a real ID has a bear in the upper right corner with a star in it. It was a requirement for the patriot act and if you want to fly soon you must have a real ID or passport even on domestic flight. All states will be placing a star on any DL or ID that is real ID, CA just added the bear to be different. If you never fly it will not matter.

I think you can bring your passport when they require Real ID until you get your drivers license. Just strange they took your money for it when it requires a drivers license! That’s the DMV for you! 😹
