Alan & Jono's Watching/Reading List: December 2022

Alan:

Hey Heroes!

December is always busy. There’s holidays to prepare for and celebrate. Friends to feel bad about not talking to for most of the year, and not enough time to do all the things we want to do, or feel like we should do, so we curl up on the couch and just feel a bit like failures. But the good news is, we’re all a bit like failures, so graded on a curve, we’re all doing just fine. Have another spiced cider. You deserve it.

What I’m reading!

What I’m watching!

What I’m playing!

And…

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

I've been getting into Bridgerton, at long last! It's like a saucier Jane Austen for the modern era, but I think the relationships are fascinating! Some real toxic stuff there, but some real wise and beautiful stuff there as well. I'm reading On Grief and Grieving by David Kessler and Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, which is one of the all-time greats on the subject of mourning. Highly, highly recommended. For the holiday season my kids and I have been watching Arthur Christmas and Illumination's version of The Grinch with Benedict Cumberbatch, which sits squarely between the OG (the best) and the Jim Carrey version (the least best) in quality.

What have you been watching and reading this month?

Such a wholesome show!

Jono, I am so excited that you are finally watching Bridgerton! I originally found Cinema Therapy because you did a reaction video to Bridgerton's Kate and Anthony on your Mended Light channel, since Alicia had watched the show. And once I found you and Alan here, I've become such a huge fan. Please, please, PLEASE could you do a Cinema Therapy episode on Bridgerton season 2? I know it's not technically a movie, but I feel like the Firefly episode introduced a bit of flexibility to include shows. ;-) I would love to hear both of your reactions to their style of "film-making" and the love story, because my husband and I find so many parallels with Kate and Anthony, including how they show how an oldest child can carry their family's burden and finding love while dealing with grief. I also want to say that I'm grateful to you both for all the work you do. Cinema Therapy brings so much joy and learning opportunities into my and my family's lives!

Aubrey DeBoer

I've really been enjoying Andrew Rowe's books. He's got a couple of different series going on right now but they have the richness of Sanderson's worlds with the occasional wink and nod to nerd culture.

Kristine Amdor

Addendum: Megan got me the last Wax and Wayne Mistborn book from Brandon Sanderson, so I've been re-reading that series. Halfway there. In 6 days. I _love_ Brandon Sanderson.

Alan Seawright

I’ve been reading Charming by Elliot James and it’s sequel, Daring — they’re obviously Romance Fantasy (with a bit more fantasy than romance, which is great by me) but the narrative voice is just so snarky and flippant and funny :) — it reminds me of another series that I love; The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Which I will be re-reading again very soon in hopes that I finish the 17 books before he releases the next. Which odds are, I will (his releases are so few and far between for Dresden these days T.T)

Deborah Olsen

I started reading The Body Keeps Score, but then I had to stop and go get a highlighter. Ready to jump back in today.

This is what I have seen or read these past few weeks. I won't give it a rating, rather, I'll give a recommendation or not. TV Shows: Prime Video: The Reacher TV series, was excellent. Recommended. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan 1 episode. Good so far, recommended. Netflix: Wednesday was great. Recommended. Treason was awful. Not recommended. THE VOLCANO: Rescue from Whakaari was a really good documentary. Recommended. BBC The Tourist. Interesting. Recommended. The Traitors. Nail biting reality TV show. Recommended. Movies: The Desperate Hour (2021) starring Naomi Watts. Great acting, terrible screenplay. Not recommended. Book: Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antiona Fraser (2002). A biography on the famous French Queen, highly recommended non-fiction book from myself.

I think The Fablemans would make a great watch party and then Jono could do a react to Alan watching The Fablemans. But honestly, I just haven't seen it yet and I am sure it is insanely good.

Happy anniversary! I can't wait to see Avatar 2! I just got back in the country - Jonathan

Cinema Therapy

For my wedding Anniversary, we watch 2 movies (and have been doing it for 13 years now!) So this year we watched Avatar 2, we loved it too, and we are going to watch the new Knives Out on Netflix in a few minutes. As for books, I have read about 12 this month, but my favorite new read is Finding Me, a Memoir by Viola Davis. Holy Cow, such a powerful book!

CydneeBee

Bad news but fingers crossed for a happy ending!!

It was hacked. They are trying to get it reinstated. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. 🤭

I miss it too, did Jono delete the Mended Light channel?

Lizzey Love

Awesome. Thanks. Happy New Year!

It got hacked, our fans reported that it got hacked to help us out, YouTube responded by taking down the whole channel. Fingers crossed it should be up again in a few :) - Jono

I watched Sense8 on Netflix. It was so incredibly good that I am still in mourning over the loss of a bunch of friends. I'm afraid I can't watch anything else until I have mended my heart, which is really hard to do without mended light. So I'm in a pickle. Please help. Suggestions on what to watch after Sense8 are welcome. I watched one episode of Wednesday. It's good but not good enough for a rebound after Sense8.

Omg! That's horrible. Why bother with mended light? They are not controversial or anything. Just sweet and hopeful.

Channel was hacked and taken down. They're working on getting it back.

It's been a crazy busy month. I did manage to read Waypoints by Sam Heughan. Marketed as a memoir, but it's more than that. Interesting peek at the acting biz, but also amusing and oddly motivational. Also started Fairy Tale by Stephen King, and I'm really digging it so far. Watched Muppet Christmas Carol and Black Panther (after consuming the corresponding CT episodes) and re-watched the first 2 seasons of The Chosen ahead of the premiere of season 3. Playing 7 Days to Die on Steam, and a bunch of silly brainless phone app games. Also, I must be getting old because I can't figure out how to create paragraphs in this thing on my phone. 🙄

LB Clark

I’ve been wondering about this too! It just suddenly disappeared and I miss it!

jeneskew

What I have NOT been watching: Mended Light. The whole channel disappeared. Did I miss something? What happened?

Dang Alan - been working on Jedi Fallen Order for a while now... y'all right there? (I am still working on the extra credit portion myself - no time to play when you're pretending to be an adult). And Jono, that grief book is so old-school I read it in college... y'all right there? If you haven't read it yet, "The Other Side of Sadness" by George Bonanno is good (and more my style, but that's just me).

Neurotic Cow

I have been watching American Monster (true crime) its more like listening while I do other things. I cant find the time to just sit and watch something. As for reading i read (listened to) The Woman in the Library. Really great murder mystery.

Morgyn Olson

I did really like Wednesday to. I'm slowly but surely making my way through the stand by Stephen King...I have a thing about death of kids in film and books and i know he doesn't shy away from it. I have small children so I'm watching a lot of bluey in between watching people play with batman toys...I don't know what their fascination is with that but it drives me Bananas.

Teesh W

Love What Dreams May Come, its an oldy but goody!

B

'the Tim Burton-y-ness was juuuuuust right' Succinctly/accurately put. I like Tim Burton, but he's often... on the too much side. Whether it was his maturity or balance with other people, I don't know, but I really appreciated it.

William Timmins

I've watched What Dreams May Come which is a great movie about how the afterlife could be and finding peace, Die Hard1/3/4, Klaus, Hawkeye, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, States of Grace (recommended by Jono, thanks for that ;]) The books I'm reading are Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Eragon. And I'm playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Cyberpunk 2077.

Loki Dokey

Hey, we watched Glass Onion last night, too! Tons of fun. - Alan

Cinema Therapy

Reading Upgrade by Blake Crouch, just binged his other books that are phenomenal reads. Watched Glass Onion last night, super enjoyable even though the 'who dun it' was a little predictable, still thoroughly enjoyed. Just picked up Death Loop on Xbox super excited to get into that!

B

I was literally making my watched and read list last night! Coincidence? I read The Keeper of the Night and it's sequal The Empress of Time. Fun stories, but the character arcs felt off to me. Too waaaay much time spent wallowing in the "Nobody understands me and I deserve better" pit. I'm also working my way through Jade City by Fonda Lee (Lan just died last night, and I'm sad. Though he got a much more glorious turn than most decent people do in epic fantasy.) Working through Wednesday, on episode 6. Creepy in just the right areas, intriguing in just the right amount. Also rewatched Toy Story movies and Disenchanted.

Ayesha Ali

Still reading Nona the Ninth! Also just got into Squad! Mainly for the Star Wars mod galactic contention

Steven S

I’ve been watching a bunch of anime and Cobra Kai. Haven’t had much time for movies lately, but I did see Tropic Thunder and Avatar Way of Water which were both great. Also been playing a lot of God of War Ragnarok since finishing Jedi Fallen Order recently. Hoping to start Final Fantasy Crisis Core Reunion after that. Not much for reading outside of some weekly manga series.

Andrew Feistner

We've been reading The Extraordinaries series. Lead characters are Queer, ADHD AND superheroes! Too brilliant ! Watched: Treason Netflix - It needed to be longer with more Charlie Cox ! The Broken Hearts Gallery Netflix - this is a must see ! Playing: Trying to solve a rubiks cube lol Chacha 💙💕
