DIRECTOR'S CUT: Therapist Reacts to TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright continue the agony of watching the Twilight saga with Eclipse, and break down Edward and Jacob's terrible manipulation and control toward Bella. To Bella's credit, she actually stands up to them a few times, but they don't seem to learn a lot about actually respecting her free will, boundaries, or consent. It's gross.

They also talk about the importance of consent, taking ownership for our mistakes, and honoring other people's rights to make their own decisions. And how Edward and Jacob REALLY struggle with this! Run away Bella!! You can find someone who will be all sweet and sparkly and devoted to you, but not be a creepy stalker or manipulative abuser. You deserve better Bella! Or at least those of us watching the Twilight films deserve better than to watch these horrible relationships and see them romanticized and idolized.

I'm not sure if it's cultural thing or me thing but saying someone in relationship that I love them still seems to me like kind of dick move. Like she already made a choice and I'm not sure I'd really trust someone who dumps their partner because I asked them out. What stops them from doing same thing to me? Like I get it's complicated but I thing relationship should end because it doesn't work, not because someone else entered the mix.

I watched all twilight cinema therapy episodes several times already but last week I finally got the courage to watch the actual movies for the first time :D and I have found the best ship besides convent (honorable mention also goes to mike but he is too healthy option so bella would never find him interesting). Bella should have ended with Aro (Michael Sheen) (And I'm not just saying it because even as straight heterosexual man I have crush on michael sheen). Aro is treating her with respect from the begining. He even asks for consent before he tries to read her mind (who asks for consent in these movies?!). He asks her opinions and actually listens. And all that while she is human and basically cattle for him. He admires her, even without being dumb horny teenager and it's about her being special not about her looks or her blood being tempting, he is seeing her potential as person and a vampire (which is what she seems to want more then Edward in eclipse, being immortal and staying teen is her main goal). And he is still murderer and to some degree manipulative so he is still toxic enough for someone as dumb as bella to fall in love with him.

This was the first CT YouTube video I watched It's great seeing the extended version. I'm autistically obsessed with Twilight, not because I like the characters, but because everyone aside from Alice acts like an idiot, and I wanted to fix it so bad.

I'm sitting here watching this and Jacob pops up and his hair looks all... wet... for some reason. And I'm like... haha... he's a wet dog. 🤣

The amount of laughing I did at both of your comments throughout this was more emotions I felt than when I actually watched these movies. You guys are the best!!! Thank you for everything you guys do! And also introducing me to Rifftrax, I've watched the first 2 twilight movies with Rifftrax and it's so much more bearable!!! "Washington, as played by Canada" 😂

This whole series enraged me. While I appreciate the perspective of a relationship therapist pointing out unhealthy aspects of an idolized and popularized toxic relationship and completely agree, and while it may not have been a masterpiece in the cinema universe, the fact that many women love it is due to the idea itself. Here are my negative points on your take: First of all you went into it completely biased, with the idea that it is simply a garbage-tween-pop-culture movie franchise. I cannot blame you entirely, it is kind of garbage. But what all of your responses to the series lack is perspective. Picture this: You are a tween girl at the peak of the Twilight Era. You (and the entire population of teen girls in your small town) wait hours in line at the movie theater every time a new one comes out. This is one of the first tastes you have of being allowed to consume media with adult relationship content. The idea of MULTIPLE immortal beings with unearthly, godlike abilities (and looks) that are in love with you, despite you being a 'normal human,' enthralls every fiber of your being. As a boring tween, with a boring suburban life, this arouses your wildest fantasies and makes you feel as if one day Edward will appear in the trees in your backyard and carry you away to your happy ending. This encapsulates every normal, unpopular, invisible teen girls desire to be sought after, and is what makes it so appealing to women. As to the reoccurring themes of unhealthy relationships, this was written by a woman and so needs to be looked at through the lens of a woman to be even remotely appreciated. For most of us, from the time we are little girls learning about relationships, one of the first things we are fed is that "if a boy is mean to you, it means he likes you." We are taught to obey our fathers, and we are taught to not make the men in our lives angry, as they are completely capable and willing to harm us. The point is that for an overwhelming majority of women our idea of love and what a relationship should be is based around the fact that men will always have the ability to control us, and we simply seek the ones who aren't so bad. Even in the early 2000s, this was a common way of life for many women, and only recently are more and more of us pushing away from this and taking our liberty back. This movie and novel franchise is simply a fantasy, it is rooted in reality in that we expect the men in our lives to control us, but it strays from this narrative with the otherworldly aspects and the concept that Bella is finally able to begin making her own decisions towards the end of the series. From the perspective of a nonprofessional movie critic, a young woman who's sexuality was born from the Edward vs. Jacob era, and someone who has gone through therapy and is constantly fighting for women's rights and challenging gender stereotypes, Twilight may not have been a top tier piece of cinematic art and may have aligned with harmful ideas of what a relationship should be, but it gave rise to a new outlet of becoming ones true self and deciding what you want out of life as a woman. Thank you and good night.
