DIRECTOR'S CUT: Psychology of a Hero: INDIANA JONES
Added 2024-01-01 18:00:15 +0000 UTC
How do you let people in after being hurt? What's your favorite Indiana Jones film?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are dressed and ready to dive into the hero journey of Indiana Jones across five films (but mostly the original three). Indiana Jones is the hero of their youth, but they’re going deeper to look at the strong emotional arcs of Indiana and where he arrives at the end of the final film. They talk about Indy’s interpersonal struggles, particularly with Marion and his father, and how he learns to be vulnerable. Alan sprinkles in movie trivia and explains how Steven Spielberg plays with tone so well.
Dude, Alan… do you practice your Sean Connery and Harrison Ford impressions? Those were spectacular lol

Hahaha. My little brother had a replica hat when he was little! He dressed as Indy for Halloween that year!

Hahaha. It’s like me with the 4 and 5 pirates of the Caribbean movies. I REFUSE to acknowledge their existence….they end at the post-credit scene in 3……..haha!

I remember the first time I watched Doom and I was so confused……(then again I was like-13…..) when I went back and rewatched it again for a “cinema acting” class in college I was like-WAIT THIS IS A PREQUEL?! 🤣

“It’s a magic hat movie!” 🤣
Last Crusade will forever be one of my top 20 favourite movies. I mean-Indy is Indy (even in 4 and 5…like-take out the aliens and 4 would have been perfect cuz I loved Shia LeBouf and bringing Karen Allen back….and that scene in 5 BROKE MY HEART 💔) but yeah. Last Crusade is like-a perfect movie. Action, humour, and heart. It’s so good. The “let it go” scene always gets me because it’s the moment when Henry stops calling him “Junior” and calls him “Indiana” and it just is SO GOOD. GAHHHHH! Yay script writers!

So my partner and I rented Dial of Destiny solely because we went to a John Williams concert and he conducted the motorcycle chase piece saying that he included it in the concert because he couldn't hear it when he watched it in the theatre with the motorcycle noise over it. We got through to the second motorcycle chase then lost interest. I only like the first three because I grew up with them 😄

There is one way I can relate to Indiana
And it’s when he says the line “it’s not the years it’s the mileage”

I'm among those who would love to see it as a private YouTube link. If I want to share it with anyone, I'd prefer to use the TV. But the display mirroring doesn't work all that well, so it ends up poor quality.
You can post a video on YT and make it a private link, so that only those who are patrons can see it. :)

I love these movies, but never really caught that arc. Love it! Thank you for the deep dive! And Temple of Doom makes so much more sense now, I didn’t realize it was a prequel!!

One thing I love about the cliff scene in Last Crusade is that at first Indi is surprised that his dad is hugging him. And then he just leans into the embrace and you see just a flash of little boy in his face! It's so subtle and only lasts a second but it really hits hard for me!

I just had to share… My home is in central CT. My ‘extra grampa’ Mr. Welgosh was asked to be in the movie during the Yale motorcycle chase as a car extra! He’s sitting in one of his classics while they race by 🤣 I’ve always been thankful to have grown up on these movies ❤️

How can I have two such great internet dads who are so much younger than me. So much "Dad" humor in this, but like Indiana Jones, woven in with authentic poignant moments. Love the bit about the Temple of Doom being a prequel. Makes much more sense.

This was a really lovely deep dive into a character I loved as a kid, didn't care much for in my late 20's (Harrison Ford characters pretty much treated women like trash in that era, and most female characters were written like trash). This really added a lot of depth to the arc. Last Crusade was always my favorite... may need to give that another watch now in my 40's. :)

Thank you for mentioning the Young Indy TV series! It was a remarkable show that really dug into the character. The WW I arc was also... Heavy. It hit very hard, in the way they topic should hit hard. If you did TV shows it would be a good one. I'm also really angry they edited out Old Indy. He was one of the best parts. A cranky but loving old man who has *seen some sh't*.

I liked it too. And I loved 4. They were both fun as hell and continued the Marion story and that’s all I ever wanted 🩵

Dial of Destiny has it's...well, you know, but one of (if not the best) scene in the entire movie is when Indy talks about his regret of never being able to reconcile with his son. And it's just Harrison Ford...talking, acting. Alan and Jono brought up Harrison's skill as an actor earlier on and I just immediately thought of that scene. It was so heartbreaking, but so good character wise--which I think Dial of Destiny did well at, even the other parts of the movie aren't as great.

I'm solidly in the 3-film franchise Indiana Jones group. I can't say my thoughts on the last two, especially the last one. In fact I might get banned for expressing my true feeling on it! LOL! So I'll say nothing...

Yeah I have to second this. There is no app for playing these videos on my tv and my phone won't airplay them. I am forced to haul my computer down to the tv and physically plug it in. If these were on Youtube I could just play them from the TV's Youtube app.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I loved Dial of Destiny. To me it's just another evolution of Indi, and it shouldn't be all fun and laughs, considering what he's been through. He's a bit broken, so he's quiet and subtle about his grief, painfully truthful when questioned, and so the movie feels the same.
A lot of the fun action is left to Helena (and it feels like the passing of the baton to me), and I think people still wanted Indi to be in charge of that feeling. I understand that, but I guess I accepted the change because it felt more realistic, and was a great storyline for him.

Is there any way that the patreon only episodes can be uploaded as private to YouTube? That way we can follow the private link to them and watch them on tvs. I love watching cinema therapy on my tv, but I can't do that with the patreon episodes which forces me to sit at my computer to watch them.

Great episode, I must admit even though I knew temple of doom is prequel I never thought about character development so thank you for this episode :-)
Love the pants story :-D
I never got why anyone has problem with crystal skull. If indana jones wasn't dumb it would be boring :-D My father alway said that when spielberg has some really dumb idea he realizes he can't use it in Schindler's list but he makes a note to use it in next indiana jones :D Personally it might be my second favourite because of villain. Irina spalko is imho closest to be Indy's equal in inteligence and her henchman is also pretty scary.
Dial of destiny didn't hit many moments for me, it was lot of fanservice and main story didn't really work for me. I didn't like that the ending of crystal skull which was perfect to me was kind of annuled. But emotianal moments were really strong and ending was cool and nearly made me cry.
Damn now I'll have to rewatch whole series but this time starting with temple of doom :D

When your friends have a similar brand of ADHD and they start singing "to the window, to the wall, till the sweat drops on down my balls!" to Indy's theme, in flawless synchronization, so that it's inextricably and subconsciously linked for your benefit(?) as well...

Ah! Harrison Ford! Another carpenter who brings magic with both stage and story.
I don’t let people in, I just set our relationship on fire, ghost them, then pout about it.
Thanks for another great Episode!

Connecting to Junior (we called the dog Indiana) has always boiled down to their conversation on the blimp in Last Crusade...and I really hope I don't have to jump off a tank, off a cliff, for my father to be vulnerable with me like this.
I just want to say tank you internet dad's for being who I could explore my own trauma with, when I feared my real father would invalidate (or worse blame me), rather than hear me. There are conversations I don't know if we will ever have... but I get to grow with your help, and it makes my world feel less small and predetermined.

There’s a lot talk about how Harrison Ford is a bit of a cranky jerk (to put it mildly, depending on who you ask) but I loved hearing how he and Ke Huy Quan reunited, Ford immediately recognized him, despite not having seen him for decades, and said that Quan’s accomplishments were all his own, and he had nothing to do with it.
