Alan & Jono's Watching/Reading List: March 2024

Alan:

Hello Heroes!

March! It’s a month. Things happened during it! (Including Emerald City Comic Con, which was a blast!)

What I’m reading!

What I’m watching!

What I’m playing!

I also launched a podcast called Murder She Rolled. It’s available anywhere you listen to podcasts. It’s a bit less family-friendly than Cinema Therapy, but if you like murder mysteries, Dungeons & Dragons, or just hilarity and mayhem, I think you’ll like it. I’m really proud of what the cast is doing, and our Dungeon Master (David, who edits Cinema Therapy) is one of the best I’ve ever played with.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi all! This month I loved seeing Dune: Part Two in theaters. Thought it expanded on the first in compelling ways and was a visual feast. I was disappointed in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, because I loved Ghostbusters: Afterlife and felt this was a big step down. I also just caught the 25th anniversary screening of The Matrix in 4K Dolby Atmos. That may be the best theatrical experience I've had in my life!

I've been watching Batman: The Animated Series with my kids, as well as the original X-Men animated series from the '90s so that we can enjoy X-Men 97. I'm loving sharing these classics from my childhood with them! I'm also slowly chipping away at Gilmore Girls and getting sucked into the wholesome drama.

I'm reading Secure Love by Julie Mennano. It's all about attachment theory (secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized styles) and how we can build healthy, lasting connections with ourselves and with others. I love books that take clinical information and deliver it to the masses in helpful, easily-digestible ways. Highly recommended.

What have you been watching and reading this month?

Just finished up The Choice by Dr. Edith Eger. What a book! So inspiring and challenging. Definitely gave me a lot to think about and inspired me to go back to counseling to continue the work of healing that I had given up on, because that felt easier. Definitely open to any more recommendations on books that inspire and challenge.

i am such a fan! I love this book! I am already on chapter 14!

I finally picked up "the three body problem" after hearing about it for several years and finally seeing an American version show up on Netflix. So far, so good!

Ze Villmark

Yes! Alan read it back in October. If you scroll back through the watching/reading lists to October, you can see what he said about it. (short version: he's a fan!)

Cinema Therapy

Has anyone read Starter Villain by John Scalzi? I read 8 chapters in about 4 hours using my imagination into the world within his book.

I will take that “L” shaped block in the bottom right corner please, good sir.

Totally appropriate for a 9-year-old. One of the reasons I'm watching with my kids is because they're too young for the X-Men movies but they want to know more about the characters, so this is a perfect fit.

We're on the last book of the Artemis Fowl series and it's been WONDERFUL. We listen to the audiobook series on our Kid-run. The narrator is fantastic!

just me

Fanny Flagg has an excellent book that was one of my first audiobook loves- Welcome to the World, Baby Girl. I need to give that a re-read at some point.

just me

Been rereading a childhood favorite series, the Inheritance Cycle (aka the Eragon books) and loving it as much as I did as a teenager! Really hoping the promised Disney+ show is going to actually happen and be done well.

GrangerDanger

I have to ask, have either of you played It Takes Two? It's a game about a couple considering divorce that slowly begin to build their relationship again. Easily one of if not my favorite game ever!

Richard Goodwin

Dune 2 was astounding; the second time I saw it with my mom we were in the imax theater and the gigahertz were crazy!!! 😄 I could watch that masterpiece over 1,000 times without becoming bored; it made my entire body rumble, the vibrations were completely out-of-this-world insane. As far as reading goes, I haven't read anything recently that much except when I'm studying my Bible or studying Sindarin, Italian, Wenja and other languages. I have adhd and my dyslexia bugs the crap out of me. (It's one of the reasons why reading anything can be frustrating. For me, at least. Most of the time, whenever I read anything, I always have to add words up to 4 for some reason 🤣😂😫🤧 I've been doing that for years, ever since I was a teenager and I have no idea why.)

Stephanie Perdue-AngelinaSkylove_719

I recently got into the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett and I’m currently going through Small Gods

Castiel Destler

First watched, and have now read "Fried Green Tomatoes" by Fannie Flagg. Really enjoyable watch and even better read, since you get more scenes and backstory for all the characters. Also started watching "Ready, Set, Love" on Netflix which is like (very tame) "Squid Game" meets "The Bachelor". Never really got into video games, but played Uno Flip with some friends the other day!

Jasmynn Huish

I'm re-reading the Kendra Donovan series by Julie McElwain - it's about an FBI agent who gets thrown 200 years into the past and it's so good! My husband and I finally caught up on the most recent season of Stranger Things, and I'm also rewatching Madam Secretary, which is one of my ALL-TIME favorites.

Lydia Hartzler

Dune was so good it makes me want to see it again but I’ve lacked the time for another watch and seeing Kung Fu Panda and Ghostbusters. Lately I saw the Rascal Does Not Dream double feature, it’s high school puberty explained through quantum mechanics. Way more interesting and heartbreaking than it sounds, would be a lot to dig into on CT if you did shows. I’ve also been going through Art + Faith by Makoto Fujimura for a church small group and it’s really good, highly recommend! With games, it’s been Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intermission so I can get to Rebirth.

Andrew Feistner

Reading "Let's buy the land and cultivate it in a different world" by Rokujuuyon Okazawa and "The Yamas and Niyamas" by Deborah Adele.

Kimberly

I 100% thought BTAS would be an Alan contribution. Jono, you have impeccable taste, and I am also in the middle of a Timmverse binge

Connor Maxwell

I'm re-reading (or rather listening to the Audiobook after reading the paperback years ago) the Percy Jackson series. I just started book 5. Jessie Bernstein is a wonderful narrator. I’m going to miss him when I move on. I’m watching The Traitors UK (much better than the personalities on the American version), and re-watching Community for the 20th time. I just finished Doogie Kamealoho, too. Disappointed that it was canceled. Love me some Ronny Chieng. As for movies- finally saw Wonka. Really kicking myself (my husband, actually- he’s the one that didn’t want to go out) for not watching it in theaters. WOW. The visuals were stunning. Wasn’t as impressed with the music, though. We’re also re-watching a lot of old Disney movies- we call it Princess Pizza Party Saturday. Mind you- we don’t have kids. We just like Disney and any excuse for pizza.

Maggie Nardi

I also watched Dune part 2 and loved it. I really have to get around to reading if too! I’ve been discovering south america (and Estonia, weird combo but it happened) this month so not a lot of reading and watching, but richer in experiences 😍 I did have time to finish ”The left hand of darkness” by Ursula K Le Guin. Very fascinating and interesting concept. It’s about an ambassador visiting a planet where the humans have no gender outside of the ”mating season”. And it focused a lot on how that would affect a society. A very reflective read! I also watched Damsel om Netflix and, to my own suprise, liked it! Maybe a bit predictable but enjoyable all the same. I started watching band of brothers after my own brothers were chocked I have never seen it. But I might not be in the right mood for it just yet.

Sara Wagiström

The podcast is fun! Makes me want to try D&D but it’s intimidating. Feels like it’s heard to break in for the first time. Dune is amazing. Denis is I think my fave director. The Dune films, Arrival, they’re just all so good. I got to see Night of the Living dead on 35 mm in film school. We had a whole horror section and it was so good! Also saw Halloween on 35 mm. It is slower paced but the film itself is really good (and not scary to today’s sensibilities which means I can watch it lol). I’ve been reading lots of football romance novels. Yep. You read that right. Right now I’m reading a cozy romance from a local author set in an Irish pub. With a cat! So far so goid

Lauren Wagstaff

B:tAS is something I can rewatch many times over Currently rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series as well as Leverage: Redemption. Enjoyed The Beekeeper this month as well- it was kinda gratifying watching computer scammers get their comeuppance vis a vis a resolved Jason Statham character, even if was fiction.

SJ McQuillan

I just finished Sold On A Monday by Kristina McMorris as well as Kiss of the Selkie, which is a Little Mermaid retelling by Tessonia Odett. And, this morning I started Reckoning (the 2nd book in the Ascension series by Laura Hall). In physical books, I am reading Winter's Heart (the 9th book in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan) and War Storm (the 3rd book in the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard). And, to top it off, I am listening to the final book in an Audible Original series by Molly Harper called A Farewell to Charms. I am rewatching Bones, NCIS, and Murdoch Mysteries with my husband, and watching Elementary for the first time with the same.

Abebi Shelton

Hello! March is indeed a month! I have managed to consume quite a bit of media, this month! 🌟 What I've been reading: Stephanie Garber's fantasy romance series, Once Upon A Broken Heart, then Caraval. 6 books! I loved those ☺️ What I have watched: I've been on a cozy comforting romcom rewatch spree to heal my soul. • Julie and Julia • What girl wants • 27 dresses Then I've been sucked in this masterpiece of an anime that Frieren: A journey's end is. Such a joy to watch!! Finally, as I am a video game developper after all, I managed to start Elden Ring, which is brutal in its difficulty level, AND exactly what I need to release tension 😛 I hope you guys have a wonderful april !

Maru

Ooh, I’ve been watching X-Men: TAS in perpetration for X-Men 97 too. Some of it is a product of its time, like the zooming text to say “to be continued” in “Savage Land Savage Heart Part 1.” the dialogue can be cheesy too, and I had forgotten how many times Jean just fainted from using her powers, but I am still very much enjoying it!

Lauren Frey

I generally do audiobooks due to neurodivergence, and I have finally – FINALLY! – gotten around to the original Hitchhiker’s Guide audio plays. Martin Freeman’s narration of the books is quite good, too. [ETA: I have heard the primary phase several times before, albeit in a translated version. Unfortunately, the Danish version doesn’t always match the original in an intergalactic hitchhiking case. /ETA]

Freya

Jono, is the original X-Men series appropriate for a 9 year old? Also, this month I read How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis, and it felt like getting a hug. My hubby and I just started playing Last Epoch together which is good fun. We also saw Dune 2, and yeah, that was impressive. My husband went back and saw it again with my dad.
