I watched the GI Joe movie dozens of times as a child. They did a good job with the characters in this one. Pretty fun

But you did hit on a key point to this season I think: the crazy meta-ness of Dan Harmon really stands out in this season. I think that's why I'm more of a fan of the earlier seasons as well as Season 4: there's a bigger attempt to keep more of the stories in a grounded setting, with a few episodes sprinkled in to go over the top and wink at the fourth wall. Season 5 and 6 definitely play (for better and for worse imo) into Harmon's joy of being meta. If that's something you like I'd highly recommend reacting to Rick and Morty after this to see where this craziness really goes.
