QUEEN: A Night At The Opera | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 48

I don't know how it's possible, but Episode 48 is our first episode to feature Queen! And, I'm excited to share this extended listen with y'all because it's my first time ever listening to a Queen album in its entirety!

I absolutely loved the album, especially for all the varied styles of music. Somehow, Queen makes it work! Enjoy!

Now A Day at the Races !

Next, you should dive into News of the World, or Jazz. Or even their last great, IMO, album, The Game. Rest in Peace Freddie…

Steve Hartke

Finally watching. I was hoping Doug would appreciate the beautiful segue from Prophet's Song to Love of My Life. One of my favorite Queen moments.

Scot Poland

Doug, loved it of course, do you realize that all of the harmonies on Love of my Life are all Freddie. Brian said Fred could sing every line so perfectly, they would literally phase from one to the next

Jeannine Doyle

this was a fun album

Before I forget, Here in The Netherlands they have this 70ies and 80ies radio station called Veronica. Once a year they play the top 1000 of all times. Bohemian Rhapsody hasn't finished outside the top 5 ever since I listen to it. Okay, the listeners are not the young crowd but still good to know that good music get's aprechiated.

Jan Michael

When I was 12 I recorded "Love of my life"on tape and didn't know who it was. I only thought this must be the most beautiful song of all times. Still think that and it's also one of the most epic albums of all times. Lovely reaction.

Jan Michael

An amazing album, although it should really be treated as a double album with A Day at the Races. While all four members have written hits, including Brian (We Will Rock You, among others), Brian is their secret weapon when you get to the album tracks. His writing is so amazingly good, and I love his lead vocals during the Queen era as well. His songs on Sheer Heart Attack through News of the World in particular are among the best songs ever written in my opinion. Of course, he also wrote Who Wants to Live Forever.

Randy Hammill

It's probably been at least 40 years since the last time I listened to this album, and I'd forgotten what a brilliant album it is. In the poll, I voted for "A Passion Play" (and I do hope we get to it eventually), but I'm thoroughly pleased that I was outvoted! What a tour-de-force. Top-shelf musicianship from start to finish, and a mixture of styles and genres as good as any Beatles album. It's a shame that I forgot what a thrilling experience this collection of songs is--and in my opinion, "The Prophet's Song" is the biggest thrill of all. The things Brian can do with his homemade guitar are pretty astounding Thanks for this one, Doug. And thanks to my fellow Doug-lovers who voted for this one!

Bill Brinkmoeller

Doug, if this is the first time you've listened to a Queen album all the way through, you absolutely 100% MUST listen to Queen II from start to finish. It's utterly brilliant.

Dan Vitale

The first album I bought. Always makes me smile. Wonderful music.

Guðsteinn Bjarnason

I just realized (after 40 years or so) that the last track also could have meant something like: may God save us as a band: if this album doesn’t do well, Queen is finished.

Frits van Voorst

I'm happy this one won the poll. Looking forward to all the others coming next , as they'll be as fun as this one was. I was one of those weirdo kids who actually had the lyrics of THE PROPHET SONG printed on construction paper that wrapped around my history textbook! Those lyrics were more interesting than every page in that book! P.S. I was already pegged as a weird California-hippie-stoner-loadie-burnout by then, so the lyrics on my book didn't seem too terribly out of place, for the times.

Sheer Heart Attack gets my vote if it's just gonna be one more.

Doug, as much as I love Phil Collins, Roger is another favorite. He's got killer pipes and you gotta love his style as a drummer

Frankie Cerniglia

So looking forward to watching this reaction. I love this album

Ruth James

Found this on YouTube. https://youtube.com/watch?v=POsOP3TF-XY&feature=share7 .

Prog Rock Piano Bar

He did notice that in the original TDD episode. I was glad he did, too. Such an amazing, yet subtle detail.

Prog Rock Piano Bar

I heard Brian talk about Good Company, and the last section (especially) was meant to use his guitar to recreate all the sounds of a dixieland band. He said the process of recording that was suoer laborious and intensive.

Something to investigate next time: am I wrong, or does every instance of "mad man" in "The Prophet's Song" land on a slightly different chord?

Jeff Norman

Big headphones, and a long curly cord, and feet over the back of the sofa.

James Jarvis

I am remembering when you put 5 Led Zeppelin albums up against each other. At some point you might consider a Patreon vote between Queen I, Queen II, A Day at the Races, Sheer Heart Attack, and News of the World. Whatever happens, you're gonna love the outcome.

Steve Hall

Death On Two Legs... the thematic follow up to Flick of the Wrist from Sheer Heart Attack - Freddie railing against the horrible management situation that had them empoverished and on the brink of having to pack it in altogether, prior to this album, despite moderate success. Their first three albums were mostly recorded after hours at Trident studios on spec time with contactual obligations attached that made it impossible to profit.
