Q&A Episode Questions!

Hey All,

We are doing our world famous Question and Answer episode tomorrow, and this is where we get to ask you, our most dedicated listeners for the topics of discussion you want to see us talk about! Fire away in the comments here and we'll get to as many as we can on the next episode.

THANK YOU!

- Marshall

Every time you play a hand differently from the way you would have played it if you could see all your opponents' cards, they gain; and every time you play your hand the same way you would have played it if you could see all their cards, they lose.”

Ben Gould

Pt. 1Has has poker influenced your mtg play and vice versa? Pt 2. Do you think Skalanky’s fundamental poker theorem applys to mtg?

Ben Gould

Thank you, fellow Ben 💪

Ben, Highspeed Hoverbike Pilot

This is a great question

Hey LR! Thank you for all the great content over the years! As Magic strategy evolves how can you tell is a new piece of tech is legitimate? Essentially how can you tell if something is a "fancy play" vs a real strategy that will give you an edge? Since we deal in small sample sizes we often need to go by feel, but sometimes optimal strategies can feel bad. An example of this was brought up in the most recent episode of CR, where restraining from overboarding can feel bad when a synergy based deck is faced with hate even though it is correct to accept that they might beat you if they draw their sideboard cards. When is it better to trust your feelings vs accepting what is commonly accepted as correct?

Sam Baker

What are your thoughts on the Washington Post article about the Magic community and heroism? There's a mention and picture of LSV in it.

Andrew O'Carroll

Hey Luis, My girlfriend and I just got a smoker. What is your favorite recipe that you have made thus far, and any suggestions on how to replicate it for the listeners?

Patrick Nelson

LSV, what is it about Vintage Cube that makes it a beloved favorite for you? Do you foresee it ever making its way onto Arena?

Bobby Miller

As content creators with hundreds of recorded hours out there on the internet, do you guys ever think about your personal online legacy? E.g, do you ever wonder whether your descendents will look you up and watch your 250 year old videos?

madmanquail

What are the most important aspects of a good Sealed format?

tgva8889

Some guy on some magic podcast kept talking about his electric smoker so I had to see what the hype was about and bought a masterbuilt XL pellet smoker model 2025118. I live in Louisville Kentucky so Derby is a huge deal here and this year a life long friend of mine was promoted to sergeant major and moved to Fort Knox so will be coming home Derby day. I only bring this up to emphasize the importance of my question. I am on a quest to find the perfect mixture of wood to smoke a full brisket come derby day. Every weekend I smoke a point or a flat to test out different ratios and will continue to do so until Derby. So far the winner is 45% pecan 45% oak 10% hickory. My question is what woods are you using to smoke brisket? Do you change it up or have you found a clear cut favorite? As always thanks for everything gentleman

Garren Bogard

Hey folks! I've been having issues lately being scared to play into answers. I've found I haven't really enjoyed the faster pace of this format because I much prefer playing a reactive deck to a proactive one as I've found myself constantly worrying about what potential answers my opponent could have. When it works out -- they don't have the answer or my aggro deck does what it's supposed to do -- I feel like I got lucky. When it doesn't work out, I feel like it just reconfirms my biases. How do I learn to enjoy a deck that doesn't feel like my style and grow more comfortable taking risks in Magic and in life?

Dr. Ace Manliness

Marshall, you do a great play by play commentary of Magic games. You're really good. Knowing that you like basketball, would you enjoy doing a play by play of that sport?

Jean-Luc Brouillet

Arena live draft or Magic Online draft? Which do you prefer?

Jean-Luc Brouillet

I recently trainwrecked an M21 draft where I first picked a soul sear, next two picks were scorching dragonfire, and the next two picks were goblin wizardry. There were good cards in other colors but I thought “I already have red cards, might as well pick up a solid common in red and solidify myself in red.” By the end of the draft those were my only good playables in red. It turns out my seat was supposed to be blue white flyers but i I cobbled together a bad blue red spells deck. Are train wrecks like this inevitable? Or should I be cautious about solidifying in a color that can be misleadingly deep at common? I know not to get married to my first pick, but how about my first five picks? Thanks gentlemen

Jonathan Montgomery

Do you guys find that old draft formats can hold up to the high power level of sets now? One of my favorite of all time was HOU/HOU/AKH, mainly because of the UBER style decks (props to Luis for that acronym). Now that Amonkhet Remastered is coming to Arena, I'm worried that it might feel flat compared to how powerful cards are at any point on the curve now.

Andy Richmond

Is it at least somewhat inside the realm of possibility that CFB would one day do more ALL limited tournaments outside of GP’s if WotC ends up pulling the plug on their limited tournaments??

Thomas Bang

Luis, where did you go for that cup of coffee in San Diego? I am not a big coffee drinker myself, but I'd love to recommend it to my coffe-loving friends! Also, can you guys convince me to stop drinking soda?

Sebastian Brown

Prediction time: When Arena arrives on phone, how much do you predict you'll use your phone to play?

Søren Lahn Sloth

Marshall and Luke, Do you think that we are currently in a golden age of Limited? As part of your Top 5 episode last year, several of your choices have come out in the last two to three years. Many of the recent sets, although warping for older formats, have been very enjoyable limited sets. We have not had a bad limited set since Ixalin. If you don’t think this is.a “golden age” what period would you say was the golden age of limited for MTG. Thanks and love the show.

Tamalan

Hi Guys, I absolutely love your Podcast and can't wait for the Episode each Werk. I'm really happy you've been able to reignite your love of the game after the low end of last year. Now my question: when watching streams I recognize that the pros usually hold back their cards at a point in time when I would have dumped my hand to steamroll the opponent. Can you share some thoughts to improve my game play? Thanks for all that you do, BlueAndi

Andreas Mueller

Hey Guys. First of all, want to say I'm a huge fan of the show, and of CFB content. I think what you are doing with CFB pro, particularly with the very generous $10 option with store credit is great, but only one problem. I am based in the UK, and so cannot order sealed product from CFB. Any plans to make any deals available for your international fans?

Chris Fisher

Hey guys! I used to love watching coverage of GP’s and PT’s. It was spectacular and fairly easy to parse. I have no idea what is going on anymore. I get that the world situation has had an effect, but I couldn’t really navigate around Organized Play during 2019 either. In your opinion, are there any EASY TRICKS THAT WILL MAKE OP MORE TRANSPARENT to regular FNM folks like me? Thx!

Thomas Bang

Which Twitch streamers do you watch (if any)? Do you watch any non-MtG streams?

Daryl Weir

Hi guys. Long time listener first time questioner. I have a question on when to use removal. I’m constantly torn between pressing advantage and using all my mana (which prompts me to use removal) and playing the longer game (holding). I find it really tough to decide on the right route. Some of the best limited players seem to hold back, but if I’m an aggro deck do I just delay the inevitable by holding my removal? Help! Chris B, York, UK and Team Shelley4Life

Chris Blackwood

Hey Marshall (I don't care much for the other guy, he belittles you too much). Do you get access to any statistics through working with Wizards on the impact of Covid on magic online platforms? What do you think the long term impact to limited formats will be? If limited has become more popular online could this increase the number of limited tournaments in future or is it just wishful thinking? Keep up the great work, I actively enjoy doing housework when I know I get to listen to you guys. Yes, Luis is OK too 😁

Dominic Hudson

Hi Marshall and Luis, which were the tournaments you guys were the happiest with your own work? For Luis that would be the closest to perfect gameplay, maybe perfect choice of Decks, but also mind games and so on. For Marshall I think of the best prepared, on point coverage with which you were just completely confident afterwards. Love your show, it just made me a much more dedicated magic player!

Kevin Hubrath

Hey guys, listener from New Zealand here (awesome to hear the shoutout from Luis in the last episode). My question is, am I overrating deathtouch? I've noticed I will take a Hired Poisoner (a 1/1 deathtouch for B) or a Noxious Groodion (a 2/2 deathtouch for 2B) quite highly, and that I even prioritize having deathtouchers if I'm in the right colours because they're often very good on attack and very efficient at holding back attacks on defense, particularly bombs the opponent doesn't want to throw away in a single attack. I've found my love of deathtouch so interesting, I recently posed the hypothetical question to myself that if I was in pack 3 of a draft building a UB deck and I'm just rounding out the deck (i.e. not looking specifically for removal, two drops, etc), and I was passed a pack with a Noxious Groodion and a Wind Drake, which would I take? I feel like the drake is the 'correct' answer, but I still find myself drawn to the groodion. Comments? Cheers for the always great content, Rowan.

Rowan Thomason

Hello Marshall and Luis! I've been trying to find new ways to keep social during this extended quarantine season. Recently I've been doing screen share arena drafts with friends over Zoom, and participating in a weekly virtual pub trivia night (shoutout to the host TTodd who's been running those). What have been your favorite ways to enjoy magic socially in a virtual environment? Or if you haven't been playing mtg socially, what have been your favorite ways to stay connected? Always love the content. Thank you guys for all you do. -Elisabeth

Elisabeth Hanson

Hey Marshall and LSV! I hope all is well. I appreciate everything you guys have done throughout the pandemic. I have really enjoyed the live streams of the episodes while I was off of work. But now I'm back and now have to go back to the podcast format... Anyways, I did a a handful of the vintage cube drafts. It is so hard! MTGO is not the easiest to use (I used my Snapcaster Mage to flashback Disenchant to blow up my own Mox Pearl instead of my opponent's Wishclaw Talisman!) What advice do you have for someone who is new to MTGO and only uses it to draft cube?

Jeremy Church

Hi Marshall and Luis. I have a question regarding gameplay. Any tips on how to identify when your line/plan may have flaws? For instance, I had an opponent play angelic ascension on one of his creature. I have enthralling hold in hand and 4 lands in play so I think that's how I will get them. Long story short, I miss a few land drops and the plan does not work out. I feel I should have been able to identify that this plan was too risky but I was so focused on this line that I didn't realize it. Any tips to keep myself in check?

Paul Vidal

That long form episode with Cristin Miloti about the previous company in the office was great!

JUSTIN CAPALBO

Hello Marshall and Luis! Is it strange being so present in a great deal of strangers lives? Between streaming, podcasts and articles an avid listener may watch five hours or more of your content a week. It always fascinated me that people who make their lives "on camera" end up being such an important part of someone's life, even though it one-sided in the majority of cases. Over the years ago I walked past Marshall and Luis at events and never thought it was my place to say hi. I would have thanked you for all the great content over the years, but was worried that you must be tired of having that same conversation all the time. Hope all is well! Justin Capalbo from New York

JUSTIN CAPALBO

I second this question. I've been absolutely loving player drafting in ELD. Feels like there's a lot of depth to the draft portion as well as the game play.

Victor Grey

Not Marshall nor Luis, but I just happened to see this. In my experience, I have found that drafting M21 is like playing a game of chicken where the first person to chicken out into drafting an inferior color/color pair loses very often. Right now my approach is to take powerful cards in the Naya colors early and try my best to force my neighbors to move out of those.

Atipong Pathanasethpong

Hi LR Bois, have you guys played any of the flashback ELD drafts on arena? I think it is an all timer format that you guys understandably didn’t get the chance to appreciate to it’s fullest. If so any change in your opinions after playing more?

Keldan Campbell

Hello Luis and Marshall. A power ranking for natively American food. That's what I need.

Atipong Pathanasethpong

Hi guys! I’ve recently returned to MTG after a 15 year hiatus. Arena has made jamming drafts a lot more convenient. However, I do find myself getting discouraged regarding the limited ladder. I just can’t seem to make it out of Platinum. Any tips on how to shake off that disappointment? My win rate is improving thanks to LR!

Geoff Manderewicz

Dear Marshall, I’m a relatively recent listener and an even more recent patron. While I greatly appreciated the wealth of advice you and LSV provide your listeners, what pushed me to become a patron is your openness to discuss mental health and social issues. The day I became a patron is when I learned of LSV’s meat delivery to cheer you up during your lockdown woes. Nothing says friendship better than gifting a good steak. Thanks for being good humans. Onto my question. You recently mentioned the difference in caliber between mythic players on arena and professional players. At first, this shocked me, especially because I worked so hard to get to Diamond (whoo!), but after some thought, I considered how much depth this game has and how much it takes me personally to adjust to new and different formats. What is the distance between a mythic level player on Arena and a bona fide pro, and what are the key characteristics required to bridge that gap? Best, Patrick

Patrick Scioscia

Random question: have either of you ever ridden a horse?

Ryan

Hey guys! I’m an avid MTG MISPRINT collector and I’m wondering if either of you have ever opened a misprint, or have any interesting stories about misprinted Magic cards?

Westin Whitlock

Hi guys. Thanks so much for answering my previous question on advertising. I admit it was tongue in cheek but hearing you all geek out over it was truly awesome. (It was also probably the best tempo play I've ever made). A few episodes back Luis recommended the TV show Task Master and it's been really great. Got any more obscure gems to share? It's maybe not obscure but I really enjoyed Mythic Quest (Apple TV).

Ryan Glinski

What is your most fun archetype and/or card combo to draft in Core 21 (not necessarily the best, but the one that at this point after drafting so much you hope lines up for you). Are there any that you run because it is the best option at the time but that you genuinely don’t enjoy? Thanks for all that you do, stay safe.

Will Neil

For Marshall: Is there a watch you'd love to have, but its size is too big or small for your wrist? For me it's the A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange (too big for me at 40.5mm). Looking forward to more Wristwatch Revival content!

Kelvin Chen

My son wants to know, when will there be new genius or grifter episode? ;)

David

As an intermediate player trying to learn from the Pros, I get information on Magic from a variety of sources (great podcasts like LR and others, streams, youtube videos, Twitter, etc...). I am always struck by how different players can have widely different takes on cards, or even an entire format (see: LSV vs. BenS on Gyre Engineer in RNA). In Magic (and in life), how do you weigh conflicting opinions from sources of information that you trust? I realize it's a tough philosophical nut to crack, so I'm not expecting a simple heuristic, but I would love to get your thoughts on balancing a complex field of input when it comes time to form your own conclusions.

Eric Lynch

What card from original Zendikar block would you most like to see reprinted in the new set?

Mark Conkle

I'm wondering what your take on competitive paper magic is going to look like after Covid. Which is a good point to remind people please wear a mask in public

Andy Shadow Patron of the Arts and Lover of all things depressing Bentley

How do I successfully draft a mono white deck in vintage Cube?

Ben Clifford

If drafting on-line (so games are out of pod), would you prefer to draft with people who are better or worse at limited? One argument for better being that if everyone does a good job of reading signals it's a rising tide. One argument for worse being maybe you get passed better cards, or less-obvious archetypes are open. Does the answer change if games are in-pod? (I have the impression Luis always wants the best opposition, but if looking to maximize win percentage.)

Todd Johnson

What is the best restaurant experience you guys have ever had?

Alex schiano

I know there is no universal answer to this question, but I am still interested if you can talk generally about your thought process when you decide to trade your creature for your opponents very obvious combat trick?

Andrée

Greetings! What would you guys say is the best way to shuffle cards while both ensuring random distribution and maintaining card quality? Does that differ depending on the size of the deck (40, 60, or 100 cards)?

Professor Miner

Being that magic is primarily online now and there is no more competitive paper magic how much of an effect do you beleive it has on game play now that no one misses activated triggers? I have seen a many pro players "miss triggers" that could have been the difference between a win and lose. When we are able to go back to paper magic do you beleive this will help newer to average players remember triggers or the fact you can basically ignore them online make for players to become more relaxed and potentially miss even more triggers?

Garren Bogard

Is it ever correct to tweak or even rebuild your deck between rounds? Especially in best of 1, I often find myself with 2 losses, thinking "well, that isn't working, maybe I should swap a few cards to salvage this draft" I know I'm basing this decision on a tiny sample space, but I dread trying one more game and having the same problems with my deck show up and knock me out of the draft. Am I fooling myself with these mid-draft course corrections?

Ron Laufer

Is there any value in taking a suboptimal line in order to better conceal information? For example, I have a 3/3 and Titanic Growth in hand, while my opponent is tapped out with a 4/4 on board. Attacking is a clear signal I have a trick in hand, and they're very unlikely to block, so I can get in for 3 free damage. However my opponent can play around Titanic Growth the rest of the game and may try to set me up with a 2-for-1 with a removal spell. So is the right play to not attack, and try to use the Titanic Growth on defense, or save it for a less obvious situation? What do you consider when making these decisions? Thanks guys.

Michael Torres

Hello! I want to ask about looting. In a normal game of limited, assuming it was free to do so and you did not have to worry about decking, should you always loot? Also, please restock your shirts, I've been dying to get my hands on one. Thank you for all the great content!

Luis Goicouria (manowarelves)

Hey guys! What's the most ridiculous last pick or second to last pick you've ever gotten? Mine was Murmuring Mystic in Guilds of Ravnica at my LGS, which blew my mind when it got passed to me. Love the show as always!

Jackson McRae

Hoping you guys can give some insight on the differences in your picks and priorities *during* the draft (and deck building for that matter) when drafting for Bo1 compared to Bo3. Lately it’s seemed like if you’re playing Bo1 and you aren’t maindecking what would usually be a sideboard card, you’re resigning yourself to just saying “well if they have X, I have no way to deal.” Is that actually correct? Or is putting sideboard cards in the main deck actually correct these days? Thank you so much for everything you both do for the community!

Derek Carlson

Hello LR! Got a question about mana-bases while deck building in limited. Over the years I found that I fall into the same pattern of building a sealed deck at a pre-release with 3 colors in order to play my best cards, only to lose terribly in the first round due to mana screw and end up cutting a color just to be more consistent which yields better results. I feel like I don't have a strong grasp of land to spell ratios when building a 3 color mana base or how many sources I would need to bring in a splash. Do you have a rule of thumb as guiding principle to help build more reliable 3 color decks? Thanks for all the great content and stay safe!

Jodry Clayton

What are your recommendations for best take-out foods during covid? Burritos excluded, since they are the obvious greatest-of-all-time choice.

Sean Mullin

Inspired from Zenith Flare: Let's say, a card text says: "Target opponent loses X life. Sorcery 2B, Common" What does X need to be, so this card would get the grade of D,C,B and A respectively? Now another card says: "You gain Y life. Sorcery 2W, common" What does Y need to be, so this card would get the grade D,C,B and A respectively? (If you are still up for it, you can repeat for the third card with drain ;-) ) Love the show, keep it up! Also big respect to Marshall for being so frank about his mood in Covid19 times. Beste Grüße!

Peter Sievert

What can you recommend for improving win percentages in best of one games? I do find in best of three drafts, but for whatever reason, best of one just feels a lot more like flipping coins more often and I haven't been able to figure out what to do about that.

Dave

As a long time player, I remember when the guiding rule of thumb was to play 17 lands and very rarely diverge from that (in draft). While some formats may have been 18 land formats (original Zendikar and Rise come to mind), 17 was a good heuristic that was largely accurate (to the FNM drafter). Today it feels like every format has 16, 17, and 18 land decks. Is this a change in limited design philosophy OR a byproduct of more drafts being done thanks to MTGO and Arena? Thanks as always!

Alexander Ullman

This was a question that came up for me during an M20 draft, but it still seems relevant for draft in general. How many Murders (or insert premium removal spell here) is too many? I had to decide between a 5th Murder or a solid creature, and I'm still not sure if I made the right pick.

Petey VanSchaik

Not an MtG question I'm afraid, but Marshall, I've really been enjoying your watch repair videos. The way you narrate exactly what you're doing and why along with the editing makes them strangely compelling. The question I had, though, is what do you tend to do with the watches once you've repaired them? Do you ever sell any of them to fund more acquisitions? Do you pick among all of them for which watch you wear every day, or are most of them just collection pieces?

Robert Hanton

What is the all time strongest common for its day/format? Has there ever been an A+?

Joel Hultin

With common multi colored lands at common being a trend in recent sets how does potential cost of playing a third color (on average) go up. The common gain lands have been very easy to pick up in both ikoria and m2020 to and they make me want to sometimes add very powerful off color cards to my decks. What is the cost of this/ what is the powerlevel of cards to make this cost worthwhile.

Ryan F Stroud

Question towards Luis regarding card game design: I've heard a lot about the value of playtesting and what to look for while playtesting, but not a whole lot on how to playtest. When creating a new set, how should you go about playtesting? With sealed decks, drafts, some combination of the above, etc.?

Star Bright

How many times, on average, would you say you draft a current standard-issue set (that is excluding masters and conspiracy type side products)?

Glory Ancheta

I'm hopping into streaming for the first time. So far I've only had 2-3 viewers for my whole stream and they're mostly friends of mine supporting me. Do you have any tips for growing a streaming audience? I know in the past you've talked about the importance of maintaining a consistent schedule, but anything else?

Daniel Schneider

Recent sets have seen Wizards pushing more Legendary cards down to uncommon. How much does something being legendary affect your willingness to draft multiples. Is a 2nd grumgully or eutropia worth playing? What about the (admittedly unlikely) 3rd copy?

Ron Laufer

(Also submitting a sillier one) Marshall, who are the two people you'd pick to be on Luis's team for a team event to troll him optimally? Luis, who would you pick for Marshall?

Ben, Highspeed Hoverbike Pilot

Hey y'all. I'm a newer drafter than many, and something I struggle with is deciphering my results. Between variance in cards opened, opponents faced, how well I run, how well opponents run, and (of course most notably) in how I draft and play, it can be hard to know if a great deck went 1-3 in premier draft because I hit some rough luck or because I'm making key mistakes that I can correct. What questions should we be looking to answer when evaluating a draft and games, especially if we don't get to draft often (say, one a week or so)? Thanks so much!

Ben, Highspeed Hoverbike Pilot

First limited resources, now constructed resources. What’s next? Wristwatch resources and burrito resources? I’m secretly praying for the next expansion in the resources podcast universe

Harry

My question is mostly directed at LSV (though I’d love Marshall’s thoughts too). You’re a very entertaining individual, and often seem to make jokes that tease your friends. How do you balance being a good friend with a sense of humor that sometimes pokes fun at those same people? How do you avoid crossing the line between a joke and accidentally hurting someone you care about?
