Questions for the Q&A Episode Thread!
Added 2024-10-30 08:08:32 +0000 UTCLuis is about to go on his leave for the twins arrival, so we are bumping up the Q&A show a bit to make sure we get it in. Fire off any questions you have here, they can be about Magic but definitely don't have to be. They can be about food, life, decision making, personal finance, watches, sports, family, anything you want!
Ask away in the comments here and the guys will get to as many as they can on tomorrow's show!
THANK YOU!

Thanks to Marshall, Luis, and Paul for all your work on a fantastic show! One of my regular habits is to go back and listen to old set reviews - I feel that it helps improve my card evaluation skills and gives me a sense for how Limited has evolved. What are your top one-off mechanics from old sets that you’d like to see in a forthcoming set?

2024-11-18 19:29:43 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis! I wanted to ask for a heuristics update, specifically for mulligans. In an older Level-up episode, Luis mentioned that he would keep just about any hand with 3 or 4 lands. However, in one of Luis's Bloomburrow videos, he said he would hesitate to keep a hand without 2 drop while on the draw. What would you recommend as a heuristic for fast sets? Does the old heuristic still hold up for slower formats, or are the sets just generally fast enough now that we should update our baseline for keepable hands? What about difference between being on the play and on the draw! Thank you for an entertaining and informative show, and best of luck to Luis and Gaby with the twins! Clay

2024-10-30 19:18:26 +0000 UTCSo it feels like my podcasts are starting to plateau and I want to expand my content career to other avenues. Both of you have made pretty successful pivots in your fields, and i'm curious if you have any tips to finding new mediums to succeed in.

2024-10-30 19:16:27 +0000 UTCHey guys, hope you are all doing well! My question is, should an opponent choosing to mulligan ever affect your own decision of whether to do so? I often find myself re-evaluating this decision in my head once I see an opponent take the mulligan, but then I think to myself... shouldn't their decision not effect my own in this case? Always enjoy the Q and A episodes, thanks for doing them!

2024-10-30 17:57:51 +0000 UTCHey Guys! Great job on the vegas cube coverage . I actually watched with Reid and Marshall and then went back and watched Louis and BK. I was looking at putting together a paper vintage cube and wanted to start with LSV's on cube cobra. I noticed it only has 531 cards. Are the last 9 cards the floating spots that Louis's shifts in and out? Wishing Louis and family all the best welcoming in their new members. Doubling season is real this year ;)

2024-10-30 17:56:41 +0000 UTCThe current MTGO Vintage Cube (matching the Worlds Live Cube) is very different from the versions we have all gotten used to playing. A lot of powerful modern cards were removed. It is now much harder to draft the aggro/midrange threat-heavy decks I had gotten used to drafting. I would love to hear your thoughts on this version.

2024-10-30 16:53:14 +0000 UTCThank you! I had same question. I think there are a lot of fine details and corner cases to explore.

2024-10-30 16:46:46 +0000 UTCHey guys! Long time listener, even longer time player. Can't even remember how I found you guys years ago, but it has been a staple in my commute. If you could design your own limited set, what three or four pre-existing mechanics/archetypes would you choose based on fun and synergy.

2024-10-30 16:36:05 +0000 UTCHi, Marshall and Luis. Big congrats to Luis and hope you can come back to the show soon. Can you guys give a quick take on how much the removing of blocking order will impact Limited play? My guess is that about 90% of combat situations will be the same, most of the the other 10% may be a bit different, and only in a few situations will it totally change how combat plays out. Thanks again as always.

2024-10-30 15:15:39 +0000 UTCIs "I love a meatlocker" the best line from LSV in Duskmourn Limited? Stay hungry boys! Follow up question, favorite meat to grill?

2024-10-30 14:59:06 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis, I'm not much of a limited player but I love the show and look forward to it each week. Listening to experts talk about what they're expert in is always such a pleasure. My question: if you were to take a finely honed 'best deck' from every draft format over the last 20 years and put them into a Round Robin against each other, which deck do you think would come out on top?

2024-10-30 14:23:58 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis, love the pod as you guys plus the lords are my favourite people to listen to every week. And congrats Luis on the impending twins! You may have already been planning to talk about this as its been big news but curious about your guys opinion on the recent UB announcement of UB now being legal in standard as well as half the sets now going to contain UB settings? I personally don't mind UB as I like that it gets more people into the game I love, and I do understand the sets being made legal in standard as it does make it a lot easier for new players to get into competitive magic. My only issue is the amount of sets being UB as I think one big UB set a year would be a nice balance with maybe 3 to 4 normal magic sets as it gives a chance for new players to get in with a interesting property while still giving OG magic players the planes and settings they love. Thanks guys!

2024-10-30 14:16:14 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis. I really miss Marshall's drafts on youtube. Any reason you stopped doing them? It was especially fun to see the draft walkthroughs played out. Also, have you guys ever considered doing an who right/wrong segment on the sunset show? Basically going back and looking at the cards that you guys were far apart on during the set review. Sounds like a new LIMMy award to me!

2024-10-30 14:01:59 +0000 UTCFirst off congrats to Luis on the twins. Gonna be a bumpy sleep schedule. Duskmourn brought complexity but at the same time simplistic gameplay this limited season. It's been refreshing for sure. What is one major change you make to the set, if any, and what was the most successful thing about the set? I felt like this was gonna be a gimmicky limited format but turned out to be a top 10 in my book. Not sure an all timer but the replay value is definitely there. Thanks as always.

2024-10-30 13:49:49 +0000 UTCHi Guys, congrats to Louis and I hope the twins will go easy on him. A quick question to LSV, some time ago he got me hooked up on a game called Storybook Brawl. Unfortunately the game went down due to finance problems. Recently I found out the idea of the game is continued by Fairytale Fable. I remember you liked SB very much, so have you tried Fairytale Fable? If yes, what do you think of it? All the best to all Limited Resources! Tym

2024-10-30 13:25:27 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis, as a fellow father of 4 children I don't have a ton of free time but had recently tried to make time for paper events at my local game store. A lot of the players I meet there are into Commander and don't seem to play on Arena as much which is where I spend my time drafting and trying to break even on gems. I haven't played any Commander and don't really understand it. Can you convince me to start shifting time away from Arena draft and into paper commander? Love the show, listener since Kaladesh, Patrick

2024-10-30 13:25:24 +0000 UTCHey guys! I hope all is well with you 3 (including our resident spice bag enjoyer) and your families! Congratulations to you Luis and Gabby! I'm excited for you guys! Marshall, it was so good to have you and Paul back together in the booth! I love the coverage group you are part of now and I want to recognize Cedric, Corey, and Eilidh the amazing job that they are all doing! You had the privilege of calling some of the best matches ever in that top 8! The match between Seth Manfield and Javier was amazing! I was equally crushed for Seth and Excited for Javier! Congratulations to Javier on winning the World Championship! Is he in that GOAT tier, with the best of the best (Paulo, Kia, John, LSV)? If so, why isn't he in the Hall of Fame yet? And on that note, why isn't there a physical Hall of Fame? A place you can visit and learn about the greats, like every sport has would be really cool! If you could establish one, what is something you would be sure to include? Do you record your games with the decks you build in the draft walkthrough episodes? The first deck you drafted was super interesting and I was curious how it played out. LSV, you will definitely be missed on your leave, but I'm thankful that it is for an amazing reason! It'll be fun to have Paul on the show in your absence and I'm really thankful for him! Keep up the amazing work on the best podcast!

2024-10-30 13:23:54 +0000 UTCHey there Marshall and Luis! I’ve been listening to the show for years so I know the significance of the elk creature type, but Marshall can you tell us the origin story of Elmer?

2024-10-30 13:16:06 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis, wishing for a safe delivery! Which cards or archetypes, if any, do you miss having in Vintage Cube? I miss having creatures combo with Pod personally.

2024-10-30 12:39:13 +0000 UTCFirst of all, best wishes for a speedy and safe labor + delivery!! My question is this: I've been decluttering lately, and one of the things I find holding me back is the difficulty in letting go of a) objects from my past that remind me of my "glory days", and b) accoutrement for goals I'll probably never accomplish. Do you tackle anything like this problem in your lives? Is it somewhat akin to deckbuilding (with which I also struggle)? Thank you!

2024-10-30 11:14:03 +0000 UTCGood luck on the family expansion Luis. Thanks to both of you for all your work on the podcast. Have you guys voted yet?

2024-10-30 10:32:10 +0000 UTCHi Marshal, Luis, and the Splinter Twins on the stack. I've been listening for a few years now and loved every episode (especially the Cheon appearances). I'm finishing up my year of co-op and headed back to school for my senior year in January. I do some amount of cooking on campus so I don't have to buy a meal plan, but my question for you is, what are some tips and tricks for a college student trying to make the best of their food options with limited time, budget, and resources ;).

2024-10-30 09:54:07 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis. It's a weird coincidence, but my first episode was the one where you announced Luis as the new co-host. I think I've caught every episode since. Anyway, both of you often talk about the speed of the format. However, I've noticed in some formats people see the writing on the wall quicker than others before they concede. 17 lands catches the number of turns but not the reason the match ended. Do you think early/late concessions could skew their data? You guys usually seem to have a good gut feel for a format. Maybe gut is better than data in this case? Definitely is with food! Thanks for the show!

2024-10-30 09:35:05 +0000 UTCHi Luis and Marshall! We know some of the stories of you two playing together in the community cup and on the Magic Cruise (if I’m not mistaken). But how often have you played against each other? Either on purpose or by chance? All the best, Simon 😊

2024-10-30 08:51:35 +0000 UTCHey Luis and Marshall, firstly a massive thanks for the effort you put into the show week in week out. I have been listening to you for almost 10 years, even when I wasn't playing magic regularly. I wanted to ask a broader question about your relationships to Magic and other parts of your life, where it's hard to make time for competing priorities. Do you have any advice for managing the emotional turmoil that comes from balancing all that you want to achieve within the finite resource that is time? Ps, as much as I love Luis and wish a happy time ahead for your family, I'm keen to have Paul on the show for as long as you need Luis. Cheers, Benn

2024-10-30 08:44:24 +0000 UTCHi Luis and Marshall, I hope you're both well! Luis, I'm wondering if you ever play straight Vintage these days? I have great memories of the Power 9 tournaments at Eudemonia in Berkeley years ago, where I often saw you. I haven't played Vintage in years, but I still have a soft spot for the wild broken Vintage plays that don't happen often in cube. Do you find chances to play, and if so, what kinds of decks do you like these days? P.S. Huge congratulations on expecting the twins soon! That will be a wild and amazing experience!

2024-10-30 08:23:51 +0000 UTCI present a hypothetical that's been on my mind for years, both for myself and y'all: If (and it's a big if) a new TCG rose to the top, superseding MtG in popularity AND quality, would either of you move to the new game or just let the Magic fade and retire to other projects? To put it another way, does the passion that pushes you to stream and podcast lie with good card games in general, or Magic specifically? I know it's hard to even imagine when nothing has ever come close to MtG on either front, but I appreciate the indulgence all the same.

2024-10-30 08:19:58 +0000 UTCHey guys! Firt off, congratulations and good luck to Luis, and enjoy your time with your growing family! Are there any properties that you would be excited to see as a universes beyond set? Overall I'm not not a fan of the announcement but would love to see sets from Brandon Sanderson's cosmere.
