Hey Laowinners,
So yesterday I fought with YouTube about monetization, and they finally approved the video to be monetized, but I started getting bombarded with messages on WeChat that people were campaigning to get me sued because of my last video about "white monkey jobs".
Normally, I wouldn't take this seriously, because the video was purely in jest, and I also thought that it was fair because I also made fun of myself and close friends for taking white monkey jobs in the past.
However, the first clip was from Disney English, which is a branch of Disney's Chinese company. They didn't take it lightly that I used their clip, which was considered "internal footage not to be released". This clip was being shared around WeChat with no issue, but Disney China decided that I would be a good target, and some Chinese staff in the company started brigading other foreigners in China saying that my use of the clip was a gross misrepresentation of people working in China.
While I don't self-censor (to the best of my ability), I need to be cautious with this kind of thing, as people that don't get the joke, and are completely motivated by profit have no qualms about potentially destroying the little mans (and his families) livelihood.
This might not be over, and the lawsuit may come to fruition, but I wanted to let you guys know some of the stresses involved with this type of work, and that I really appreciate you guys for sticking with us. First I lose my Facebook, now a potential lawsuit from a Chinese company! What a time to be alive!
Thanks guys.
Bill Hartnett
