I think the monologues and everything is not cheesy at all! The beginning and ending is the text from Steve's book, so it works. Nell's character is supposed to embody acceptance (one of the 5 stages of grief and the last) and her speech shows that. That the bickering and division between siblings didn't produce hate, that they actually love each other and that's all. They are just dealing with trauma. I feel it because my family is a lot like this family. So close with one another but sometimes so far away at the same time. I never fully understood that dynamic until I watched this show
