I know. I said Glimmer, and that's why Glimmer will probably lead off June: I don't want to let it go without an update for too long. But there's a pair of factors which went into today's one-shot.
The first is that I went for my pre-writing walk this morning to try and focus thoughts, and I wound up bringing back a plot bunny. Sometimes when you get a fresh idea bouncing around in the hopper, the thing to do is getting it out as quickly as possible. Clearing space for whatever should be coming next. So I dealt with the story idea through writing it out: 8900 words' worth.
And second...
...have you seen what I posted this month?
You probably have. (You're my sponsors. I have a vague hope that some percentage of you are actually reading the work.) The ongoing stories have been exploring some pretty dark places, and the other one-shot was a fairly emotional piece where two characters spent a lot of time reopening old wounds. And I was going directly from that back into Glimmer, which actually has the Dark tag and is going to make multiple attempts at living up to it.
I felt like I needed a break of sorts. A laugh. And if I need that from writing all of this, there was a chance that at least one reader would benefit from a change of pace.
So I went for comedy. Made sure the rating could stay at Everyone, and just tried for that Impending Sense Of Doom: Lighthearted Edition.
We can dip back into the shadows next month. But for now... I just want to see if I can at least get a smile out of someone. I think we could all use a smile now and again.
There's a whole musical number about it and everything.
