Boiler models and drawings

Hey Patrons! Following on this morning's video, here are the drawings and 3D models for the 4" fire tube boiler I'm building. These drawings are a bit preliminary, as this project is still evolving. There are a couple of small fittings still missing, but the broad strokes should be correct. I'll likely post more final versions of these as we go along.

I am ashamed to say i feel a little bit out of my depth here, trying to read the "enginurding drawings" with all those interesting UFO (unidentified formatting objects)... like the slashed 0, and the symbol that looks like a "T" sprouting out of the middle of a "V". Not that i am going to start with THIS project, donchaknow. Would you consider (my polite way of pleading) making a video on how to read the diagrams, what the symbols mean, etc? I have checked many of the tubes in the interwebs, and while i am sure "the answer is out there", my searches return no joy.

Yep, that's correct! A single-acting engine should use half as much steam.

The Firetube boiler calculation spreadsheet is Great! If i were to use the calculation on a single acting engine is it as simple as dividing the Steam consumption per revolution by 2?

I don't have any videos on CNC at the moment. It's not something I've done a lot with. Your analysis is correct though- CNC is about production. If you want to make money making things, CNC is really the only way to do it. People often ask if I will sell the tools I make, and the answer is no, because I would have to charge $1000 for a hammer for the time it takes to make one on small manual machine tools. CNC is the only way to go if you want to make a lot of something.

Hey there I've learned a ton from your channel. I'm mostly a woodworker/luthier but there's so much good stuff on precision work and I learn something from every video. Inspired by a flute maker friend I'm getting interested investing time and energy into getting a CNC 4 axis router setup. I think that would solve a number of problems for eliminating a lot of labor in making instruments and help it not be totally unprofitable*. (*after investing a ton of money and a lot of labor and time) Anyway, point of the question is do you have any videos with your thoughts on CNC and why you are choosing a traditional work flow? I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts. I can see for doing a lot of one off stuff and home projects, CNC probably wouldn't save you much time, would be more costly and probably less fun. But I would love to hear your philosophy behind it. Just a thought. Thanks for all the inspiration!

LibreOffice Calc can open both XLSX and Numbers documents. Both have interesting quirks about displaying the formatting.

People have been asking for that from the beginning, and I'll definitely be doing it. It's a very long road to get there, though. Charging an iPhone with a steam engine has been a goal of mine since the very beginning.

Blondihacks

At this point if you don't power some kind of electronics project with power generated using the output of this steam engine I'll be very disappointed.

Ah, boilers. So, now I'm going to use the power tools that want to kill me to build a project that wants to explode and kill me. Will the fun never end? :-)

Hey everyone- I added the spreadsheet that I showed in the video. Note that I made it in Numbers (a Mac OS application) which I know not a lot of people probably use. I've exported it to Excel as well, but I do not have Excel so I cannot speak to whether it actually works. Both versions are attached above. At some point maybe I'll redo it as a Google Sheet so it's easy to share with everyone. I wasn't thinking about sharing when I made it. Numbers was a quick and easy way to clarify my thinking on how this all works.

Blondihacks

Oops, I had forgotten to add the spreadsheet. Thanks for asking, it's been added to the post above now.

I am new to your Patreon and was looking for the spreadsheet on the boiler specs / design but do not see it, maybe I am looking in the wrong place? I have been machining for many years and your videos are enjoyable to watch and I always find useful information .
