353. Kings of King: Maximum Overdrive

The horror! The horror! Stephen King himself helms another cars-gone-mad sci-fi/action/horror narrative and the results are disastrous. The boys discuss the lazy filmmaking, slapped together scene work, inconceivable choices, and inexplicable acting of King’s only attempted feature. Oh, and the cocaine. Out of the white dust settles a picture that might be the worst Stephen King adaptation yet. Strap in and brace yourself for the wild ride that is Maximum Overdrive.

I also vote for the 80's version. This was a great episode.

We must cover all King. There is only King.

Just so you know, there is a 1997 movie Trucks based on the same SK short story. It's free with prime right now. I haven't watched it,but if the plan for this pod is to truly cover all adaptations you'll get to it eventually. Might as well compare to this one.

I vote 80s Salem lot. It scared me as a kid. Did not seem to hold up when I watched it in the 90s. But I am into watching it a 3rd time.

I loved your no-nonsense take of this movie. A lot of folks have covered this movie in depth, but this was the first take that wasn’t like “look at how dumb this is! I love it!” It was more like “please allow us to critically break down this scene you may be familiar with. Now ordinarily you might follow these steps, basic filmmaking choices, but instead Stephen King chose to make no choices and accidentally transmute his cocaine high to the screen. This is wrong, and that’s why the movie doesn’t work.”

I'd seen it a lot as a kid and remember enjoying it
