2023-09-30 06:50:40 +0000 UTCIt's probably the best hour of scripted television, period. I watched this when it aired more that two decades ago - less than two years after my mother had passed away suddenly on her couch (heart failure) - and it still hits all the same. It's just brilliantly written in such a way that it covers all the ways to mourn; I still see so much of my own grief mirrored in Buffy, Xander, Wilow, Anya or Tara. I come back to this episode from time to time - for example after my father died back in 2009 - but it's still a hard hour to watch. So, there are quite a few episodes of BtVS I've seen more often than this one, and on an emotional level, there are at least few I like more than this. But when it comes to judging the quality of "The Body", it's the best this - or any other - TV show has to offer.

The first scene after the Christmas dinner flashback was all shot in one take if I remember correctly, from the moment she found her mum. So when dawn is in class they’re talking about drawing the negative space around the object, which is exactly what the episode was about, the body being the object, that’s why they keep showing it. The lack of music background noise made it all more powerful, and when buffy is talking to the doctor who examined the body at the end and she asks him if there really wasn’t any pain, you can see the doctor lips move out of sync when he says “I have to lie to make you feel better” but that was on purpose, because that’s not what he actually said, it’s what buffy heard in her head. So perfect.
