You missed a scene at the end. It leads into a preview of the season, so beware of spoilers but it will be obvious when that starts. I actually liked the episode better on a rewatch. I still think it was uninspired to again start with the main character witnessing a loved one, or two in this case, being blown up by super powers in the most bloody way possible. I can imagine the discussion in the writers’ room: “But this time she’s doing it herself, so it’s different. Also, more trauma—that’s always good for a character!” And it was even more unnecessary to have a supe whose power is getting small being graphically shown as someone’s sexual kink again. Uncooperative supes being locked up and tortured is also something we’ve already seen in The Boys although I’m still hoping for a more interesting backstory to “The Woods”. But I do like the characters and how some of their powers are chosen to allow for social commentary. Speaking of those powers—having a main character, especially a young, female one with a traumatic past, cutting herself to access her powers seems highly problematic. So I expect that this will be critically addressed in the show in some form.
