How the both of you know about herring? You are both not from this place! Or herring is simply something different than an ocean fish, unlikely but it can be in this world.

He didn't question at all when Ymir said "herring." But they wouldn't have herring in the walls, it's an ocean fish. So she revealed that she could read the language, but Reiner also revealed that he knew what herring was.

Reiner exclaimed “Ymir, how can you read this?”, implying that her ability to read that language shouldn’t be possible, as she “read herring”. Aka a “red herring” or something that distracts the reader/viewer from the current situation or questions they may have (in this case, people were theorizing who the beast Titan might be, what connection Christa has to the church, where the titans came from, etc.) and focus more on the current mystery of how Ymir can read this can. Isayama (the creator of attack on Titan) is such genius that he has even implemented word play into these small 1 on 1 conversations.

2021-11-06 00:36:36 +0000 UTCSo I was able to predict that Ymir was a Titan, but that’s mostly because I watched the OVA Ilse’s Notebook before Season 2 (that’s the correct order). In the OVA, a Titan directly speaks to a character and says the words “Subject of Ymir” AS A TITAN. That alone would make anyone suspicious of any character that just so happens to share the same name. Also, at the end of 2x3, they clearly framed Ymir as suspicious when talking to Reiner, which I think is a decent reason to suspect her as well, especially considering we already had it revealed to us last season that Titan shifters can easily hide in the background.
