Entering the cave was one thing, but hearing a loud shaking sound not long after swimming a bit further into the cave may have caused Kirito and Asuna to immediately realize that they were trapped inside. Looking back at the entrance, they soon find that a bunch of boulders have completely sealed the way to the surface.
If they were playing any VRMMOs and encountered a situation like that, they would've been able to use whatever in-game abilities to remove the boulders. But this was an entirely different situation, forcing them to find a different way out. Knowing this, the couple immediately decide to head further into the cave to see if there was a way out, rather than waste any time trying to remove the boulders.
But the cave turned put to be much longer and deeper than anticipated, Almost 4 minutes of swimming through the cavern tunnels with no air sources in sight. Luckily, they managed to spot several patches of air bubbles. Knowing that they can't stay down there for much longer without air, the couple started breathing the air bubbles around them, regaining air in the process.
After a long swim through the cavern's many winding tunnels, they finally found a proper air pocket at the end of the cave. Surprisingly, they found themselves to be quite deep below the ocean floor, as the sign indicates how deep they are below the surface. Diving back down, the many multicolored crystals caught the couple's attention. In admiration of the crystal's beautiful glow, they decided to take some of the crystals for themselves. Asuna even decided to stuff some into her cleavage, much to Kirito's confusion."
