Greg's Comic Book Club #14: Participation Thread

Hey everyone! Going off what Greg asked on the latest show, any recommendations on comic book related podcasts to check out?

What’s Good Greg, mystery hosts, and Best Friends? I would like to start off my giving a shout out to Jeff Lemire. Without realizing it I have read and enjoyed many of Jeff’s work, including the current run of The Terrifics, Descender (S/O Big Kev Dog), Teen Titans: Earth One, and now Black Hammer! I also just picked up Gideon Falls. I put Jeff Lemire up their with Tom King and James Tynion IV as one of my favorite authors. Required Reading: Black Hammer Vol. 1: Secret Origins, Vol. 2: The Event by Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston – Started and finished Volume 1 on a Saturday morning. Read Volume 2 the very next day and gushed about it with Kala on Sunday evening. There is so much to love about this series. The old school issue covers are a sight to behold. They all scream silver age movie poster / Saturday morning special. Every issue spotlights one hero and showcases their origin story while simultaneously propelling the story forward. By the end of Volume 1 I had a pretty good idea of everyone’s motivations outside of Colonel Weird. Volume 2 built upon the foundation set by the first installment. Not all is, as it seems in Rockwell as Lucy investigates the local library. I appreciated the fake-out with the title “The Event” not referring to the defeat of Anti-God, but Lucy’s following in her father’s footsteps. Brilliant. Black Hammer was such a delight to read I opted to read it without taking any notes in between issues as I normally would for past required reading. What I’ve been reading: The three titles I will continue to laud are Die, Hawkman, and Martian Manhunter. Die #3: Never has a comic elicited an emotional response anywhere close to this issue. There was a dragon and a story highlighting the horros of war, all tightly wrapped in a single issue. Hawkman #8 and #9: Carter Hall has traveled through space and time from Ancient Egypt, Dinosaur Island, the microverse, and most recently Krypton. Carter makes it back to Earth just in time for the antagonist Death Bringers to arrive. Reads like a summer action flick. Robert Venditti and Bryan Hitch are really hitting their stride with this run. Martian Manhunter #3: The first two issues hinted at something dark and gritty. This issue for me reached True Detective Season 1 levels of darkness. I cannot recommend this comic enough and will continue to bang the drum on this series.
