WOFF! Poll: Open World Games (Spring 2017)
Added 2017-04-03 14:17:17 +0000 UTCHello, friends! It feels like we just did this, but it's already time for our next poll. This time, we're turning to a new genre and having you decide which open world game we should play for an episode coming out on May 18.
The usual guidelines apply. Take a look at the information below, read up, watch some videos, and place your vote. The poll will be open until 11:59pm EST on April 14, 2017.
Here are the options:
- Just Cause 2 (XB360 / PS3 / PC). Cause some chaos in the fictional Pacific island of Panau using grappling hooks, grappling hooks, and grappling hooks. (Video | Wiki ).
- Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction (PS2). Cause even more chaos on the Korean peninsula in this game that did Crackdown's structure before Crackdown was even a thing. (Video | Wiki ).
- Mount and Blade: Warband (PC). One of the crunchiest open world games in existence... You hop on the back of your horse and perform quests for different factions in medieval Europe. (Video | Wiki ).
- State of Decay (XB360 / PC). You caught us trying to sneak a horror game in here. It's a sandbox where you are trying to rebuild civilization after a zombie outbreak. Also, your main character sounds like Master Shake. (Video | Wiki ).
- Yakuza (PS2). The first entry in a long-running series, this is an heir apparent to Shenmue with a distinctly grittier tone. (Video | Wiki ).
Feel free to fight it out in the comments. Thank you so much for your support!
Note: There's no Rockstar game on the poll because we're pretty sure that would win.

I'm bummed that Mount and Blade didn't make it. I was reminded of it by doing this poll and I've lost a couple of days just playing it. Its astonishingly compelling.

2017-04-27 20:08:29 +0000 UTCI'm a huge fan of the Yakuza series and I hope it wins, BUT if you guys do end up playing it I strongly recommend playing the PS4 remake Yakuza Kiwami. The first Yakuza game is historically significant and is a real trend setter, but the loading times are frequent and infuriating. It makes it nigh unplayable.

2017-04-14 11:37:16 +0000 UTCI suspect you're correct - though once you get a feel for how the battle controls work (mounted, in particular), it really does handle pretty fluidly and becomes just so satisfying. I just hope that if either of them like it at all, they give the Floris mod some time because I think it really fixes so much - esoteric expanded troop trees and all.

2017-04-11 13:36:23 +0000 UTCWitcher 3 would have benefited greatly from getting the mounted combat half as right as Mountain Blade does - it's truly the best $10 I've ever spent on a clunky terrible looking game that somehow never stops being fun. #hailbutterlord

2017-04-11 12:23:42 +0000 UTCAlso voting for Mount and Blade: Warband. Which, by the way, is on sale on GoG this weekend for $7 (down from $20)

2017-04-08 20:22:16 +0000 UTCI feel like Just Cause 2 will rapidly become repetitive and mindless, the third one feels like that even though it' better in many different ways. Very fun games but not very challenging or anything...

2017-04-08 11:18:53 +0000 UTCWent with M&B. I want to see if I'm right in that Kole will love it despite its flaws and Gary will want to like it but have a love hate relationship with it due to the battle controls but will admire the concept and ambition of the game.

2017-04-06 03:27:21 +0000 UTCI've never played any of these but they're all games i would enjoy being able to "play" vicariously thru WOFF!! So this was a tough pick

2017-04-04 22:08:37 +0000 UTCNever played any of these, but if I'm going to try one for the show, I'd like it to have horses.

2017-04-04 18:21:41 +0000 UTCI feel ya, I loved the first one. The second game was such a disappointment.

2017-04-04 16:23:35 +0000 UTCThe Yakuza series is great, but the first is a VERY rough draft of the heights they would end up hitting in the PS3 era, and so I worry it would be a very mixed bag "there is some charm but also a lot of clunk and bummers" vibe.

2017-04-03 21:28:40 +0000 UTCI was kinda bummed but not really surprised to see it so low after I voted. I remember loving the game when it came out and this would have been a good excuse to drop everything I'm currently playing and see if it holds up.

2017-04-03 19:07:46 +0000 UTCState of Decay was absolutely fascinating - very different take on the genre with the mix with permadeath. The persistent real-time kept me from a deep dive through.

2017-04-03 17:00:20 +0000 UTCI know Yakuza is gonna win. There's no contest with how much love that series has. It doesn't change the fact that I would really like to see State of Decay pass through the chicken separator.

2017-04-03 16:50:59 +0000 UTCI had fun with Mercenaries, although the ‘nothing is permanent so you can grind in a open world’ got frustrating quickly.

2017-04-03 15:35:38 +0000 UTCShoutout to the one other person who also voted Mercenaries. I knew this was a losing battle but this hill is a good one.

2017-04-03 15:03:27 +0000 UTCBe still my heart! M&B warband is one of my favorite games ever. I'll sure Yakuza will win but I'd really love to hear an ep on M&B.

2017-04-03 14:58:13 +0000 UTCVoted for the Yak, but I would love to see a two-fer down the line with Mercenaries and Just Cause 2.

2017-04-03 14:39:12 +0000 UTChahah glad to see the poll reflects my inability to decide between just cause and yakuza

2017-04-03 14:25:19 +0000 UTCSure. "Lag." (There's a feature that makes it so each patron's vote only counts once). - KR
