Bonfireside Chat 138: Senpou Temple

Last week we rescued Kuro and learned of our greater quest: to find a way to sever his immortality. One of the ingredients we need is a blade which can kill the unkillable, the Mortal Blade, which means we've got to go to Senpou Temple.

This episode covers the entire Senpou Temple path, through the Abandoned Dungeons and into Mt. Kongo, culminating in the boss fight against the Folding Screen Monkeys.

I know it's been a few years and perhaps this comes up later in the season, I just listened to this episode, but regarding the first drawing of the mortal blade and that the Wolf dies and then gets up... I understood that it kills you "regularly" when you draw it. But then it kills immortality when the blade actually cuts the immortal. But that's just my take after I heard you question it, I really didn't think about it that much before. Anyway, I'm really enjoying this season as I did all the previous ones!

Oh yeah, that's true. I wonder, does that mean anything for the "fiction" then, or does it break it?

During the Frames Fatale speedruns showcasing female speedrunners, I learned that the Divine Child's nickname in Japan is Nani-chan or Kome-chan (Rice-chan). Cute!

Ken Yuen

It's interesting how that plays into the ape, because it doesn't actually happen until he's dead.

I wanted to comment on something that was pointed out to me elsewhere that I thought was really cool now that we've started to encounter the infested and know more about them. It's interesting if you watch the different ways that different infested characters move and how it correlates to the way that a worm would move inside of them, take Hanbei for instance. When you defeat him in one of your practice sessions the way he stands back up in like this weird flowing 'S" shape not using his hands or knees or any other part of his body to assist him is really neat and interesting. Also not to jump too far ahead but watching the way the Ape boss moves also in that same weird slithery way, for some reason I didn't put 2 and 2 together with these but after it was pointed out to me looking at the movements with this in mind is a really neat touch on From's part. Also, I really liked the monkey puzzle "boss". I kept waiting for there to be some like big boss battle at the end of it or coming and was really pleasantly surprised that it was a really different type of section, I think From does good with these types of "diversions" which can be really neat. It was also really funny to watch speed runs of this section later and find that the invisible monkey starts out literally right behind you when you start. I really liked these parts/areas of the game.

When you guys spoke about the giraffe (!?) mini boss, you mentioned that he encourages you to do timed deflections. But actually, when I have an enemy doing consequetive attacks, I do just mash block. I've played around with seeing if a more conscious deflecting makes any difference, and it doesn't seem to. Vaati commented similarly when he was playing the early release. So actually I found this boss, and other enemies that use consequetive attacks, to be cheap. In general deflecting doesn't feel like parrying in previous titles, and I just feel like either I'm not doing something right, or it's too fiddly to enjoy.

i love that fight but imo it would have been better/cooler if the warrior was yelling in a different language/without subtitles. i think that's the effect they were going for, this guy just coming out of nowhere and yelling a bunch of incomprehensible shit while attacking you, and shouting the name of someone you've never met or heard of when you kill him. like Sekiro is supposed to walk away from the fight thinking "what the fuck was *that* about"

sleepysmiles

Senpou might be my favorite level in Sekiro, i love it and im glad you guys do too. we're all Senpbros at Mt. Kongbro

It makes most sense to me but there's definitely not alot to back it up. I think the story of a desperate father protecting the wrong people has a nice tragic touch to the story though

Not to crap on anyone's headcanon. I just wish it was more than headcanon.

Duckfeed.tv

He does. A couple people have said something to that effect, and I just don't see it. It's hard for me to imagine the monks carrying on a deception, and if so, it sets the timescale as really narrow. We arrive between when he got there, but before he realized his boy ain't coming back. There are explanations but they all involve sort of guessing with no text to support it. It feels like an over read situation to me. Different dialogue or more might have assuaged that a bit.

Duckfeed.tv

I always presumed that the armoured warrior offered up his service to defend Senpou in return for treating his Son, not knowing what the monks were actually doing to achieve Immortality. I might be misremembering but doesn't he say something about not letting you pass?

When we were doing guests regularly, I reached out to ENB a bunch of times and never got a response! Thanks for the kind words, however.

I really appreciate you guys releasing one episode a week. My life is taking a strenuous turn and I'm constantly tired from working, so this podcast is like going out for icecream on a Sunday after Church. It's an occurrence that has instrumental value in my bubble of being a child. I also think, however, you guys underestimate how much this podcast means to some people. The music and quotes you use at the ends of each episode are extremely nostalgic. Whenever I hear them, followed by your voices, I get goosebumps. I'm teleported back to when I would listen to this podcast and lay on my back in my sweltering bedroom closet at 3:00 in the morning to hide from my parents snoring only a few walls away. I have listened to most of the seasons of this show all the way through several times each. I am continually temped to rewind and listen to it all over again even now despite how tired I am. Thank you for being so generous with your time, effort, and listener consideration. I don't think you've made one misstep yet. Also, we all know ENB loves this game to pieces. Wouldn't it be pretty interesting if you had him on as a surprise guest? I think it would be awesome!

Hint: Tyrannicon....

I gotta look up how to ceaseless him then, for the (checks notes) totally meaningless reward. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

if you're referring to the "worst boss" I think you are... I totally "Ceaseless-ed" him. It's super cheap but fuck that boss.

Perfect Fathers day gift!
