Unfilmable 11: The Lighthouse

We spill the beans about a phenomenal movie that defies genre. The Lighthouse is in the "Lovecraftian" side of our ledger. It's not a straight adaptation, but a thematic echo, and it hits on one of the main aspects of Lovecraft's tales that we don't see a lot of: insanity. Come for the performances, stay for the amazing production details.

The seagull scene was my favorite. Specifically because of how it disturbed me. I hadn’t even thought about how it could be seen as funny. I agree with the joker takes here. Not about Ledger tho. That acting was phenomenal and my favorite joker.

Also, as I’m watching this, pretty sure Willem Dafoe is actually a time traveler and a crusty af lighthouse keeper is what he actually was before whatever temporal anomaly he encountered brought him forward

Yeah just typed in “the lighthouse” to see where I can watch it and “the lighthouse explained” came up in autocomplete

Huh, guess I need to rewatch this. Saw it at the cinema upon release and I was disappointed by it being more of a pitch black comedy than the creeping horror I was expecting. Can’t argue that each frame is beautiful, but there is a wee bit too much Gunnar Fischer/Sven Nykvist copy-paste for my taste. I like Dafoe and Pattinson well enough too, but I will argue unto death that Bobby Peru in Wild at Heart is Dafoe’s best performance

2020 did not end up being kind to any of us

I knew this movie was legit when Pattinson’s character says in Canada, we call the forest “the bush.”

There’s a pretty good director’s commentary on the blu ray with a lot of interesting behind the scenes info that I’d recommend checking out.

I yell this when Pocket gets on his bullshit.

Favorite movie of 2019, no contest. Stoked to hear what y’all make of this head-scratcher

WHY'D YE SPILL YER BEAAAAAAAANS Having just listened to your Hereditary episode (still haven't seen Midsommar, soon!), I was wondering when this would pop up. What a singularly unique and strange film. Having just finally watched Joker out of Oscars obligation a couple days before (it's not very good!) this really reminded me what a descent into madness, ambiguity and unreliable narrators could accomplish when in the right hands. Genuinely, one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. Black and white that rivals Kurosawa's best. Really unique and special stuff.

I liked it more having my expectations properly set. -GB

I need to rewatch this. I think on my first viewing I was expecting it to be more like The Witch and was a little disappointed when it didn't lean more into the supernatural elements it was teasing. But it's obviously an extraordinarily unique and well-made movie and I imagine I'd like it more on revisit now that I know exactly what it is.
