Bonfireside Chat 169: Mortal Shell (Part 1)

This week, we begin our coverage of Mortal Shell, a 2020 soulslike with some very unique touches. You play as a strange creature who can inhabit certain dead bodies, and these "shells" become your character class as you navigate the dead kingdom of Fallgrim, collecting glands for a large bird.

This episode covers the generalities and the tutorial, going over all of the ways this differs from your regular soulslike, and discussing how those changes add up to a pretty nifty interpretation of the formula.

I think I might have been there at the coining of the term "sleeving." Jerma Greer arrived at QuarterWorld after Duckfest and said he wasn't hungry because he had sleeved a whole burrito on his way over. Then Gary asked wtf he was talking about, and I asked if sleeving was when you light the other end of the burrito on fire so you have to eat it all before it gets incinerated. Good times... that weekend really has a special place in my heart as the last trip I got to take before the pandemic.

I really enjoyed this micro-slice of a Souls-like. One big issue I had with it is the opening area and how easy it is to get lost due to the area design. In the earliest release, a thick wall of fog made navigation almost impossible and a lack of significant landmarks pointing the way toward each dungeon made it very confusing. The dungeons themselves are very fun and the combat, specifically the harden mechanic, is really fun. I definitely enjoyed it, the price was very reasonable and I’d absolutely plan the next game by these devs.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Mortal Shell. I couldn't tell you anything about the story or lore but it was good fun to play & had great visual design, art style & environments. I did find that i became way overpowered using the Solomon shell with the hammer & chisel as the quick attacks built resolve so you could pretty endlessly rinse your special ability.

I got this game then ended up getting stuck in the beginning. After this podcast in going to give it another chance

So excited y’all are doing an episode on this. Definitely the non fromsoft souls game I enjoyed the most, can’t wait to hear y’all’s thoughts! Also there’s a guy called goRobo on YouTube that seems to have a pretty good handle on the lore if anyone is interested

Oh, weird - I had, across the board, the exact opposite reaction to Eredim. Right down to him being the last shell I got! I've been rolling with him and constantly thinking, okay, this is just like going Royal in Demon's Souls, right? I even thought his skill tree was the only one with consistently meaningful upgrades. Livin' in bizzaro world from you guys!
