Bonfireside Chat 185: Soulslikes in Review (Part 2)

We return for a new survey and review episode, continuing our look back at all of the non-Souls games we've covered for the show. Once again, we ask ourselves two questions: Would we recommend you play these today? And what element, mechanical or aesthetic, would you like to see someone take from each game and use elsewhere?

This second part goes through all of the games we've talked about so far on the revived run of the show, so:

I've definitely tried to look past the story/aesthetic, but the big reason I haven't played it is because of the level design. Everyone I've talked to about it says the systems are neat, but the story is horrible and the levels are just not very interesting. -GB

I'm 90% sure that you all wouldn't be a fan because of the anime aesthetics but I noticed one big missing Souls-alike here: Code Vein. Many who have played it myself included found it a very good souls alike with some cool ideas about offline teammates and class systems. You just may want to reach for the NPC mute button.

Just a heads up that Ashen has gone on sale on PlayStation store today and is only £13.19 here in UK. Is on sale till 18th August.

Just wanted to say thank you for this content, both the recap and all of the souls like content as we went through them. I don’t participate much in this community but wanted to let you know that I counted only four games that I didn’t play alongside you in this group of souls likes. Pretty cool! In general I agree with your opinions, perhaps I’m a little more up on the Surge and a little more down on Blasphemous. Cheers!

Russ Courtney

Finally got around to starting Blasphemous and the music is spectacular!

I found a cheap copy of Eternal Ring to possibly play along while y'all were going through it initially. I did NOT get very far!

I think that a game that excels at presenting Hispanic aesthetics is Shadow of the Collosus. The shape of the Collosus remind me of Mayan and Aztec architecture.

Shadow Man

I look forward to hopefully hearing your views on Hellpoint in an upcoming show.
