Call and Response: WOFF! Dispatch December 2021

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, December 20 by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Are their any plans to cover the film “Underwater” on unfilmable? I really think you guys would dig it if you haven’t seen it.

Ralph

Do you think the WOFF model could support a survey of a sports series across the years to try and understand the evolution of the series since there usually isn't a story?

Daniel Mesa

I listen to Guppy and I don't play Isaac (or I played it for an hour once and didn't like it). Is there something wrong with me?

Douglas

Are there any games that you don't like simply because they're popular? Conversely, are there any games that you over-defend because the 'discourse' says they're bad? Essentially, do you have any contrarian streaks running through you?

Douglas

Holy shit!  I need professional and life advice from a couple of dark souls podcasters.  Lately it seems that there are two things I hate: crypto currencies and libertarianism.  There's a relatively new guy at work who's good at what he does and loves FromSoft games.  We work well together.  The other day we were chatting about Kotaku headlines regarding NFTs in video games.  Assuming it would land well, I repeated I saw on Twitter, "If crypto currency comes of age, will Libertarians still be interested in it?"  Yikes.  The rant that followed was not particularly cinematic but did leave me with a soured view of this otherwise great coworker.  I suppose because you two are in my ears all the time talking Souls and shitting on Libertarianism I have conflated the relationship between the two ideas such that a love of the former is necessarily held alongside a disgust for the latter. 1. Have either of you ever soured a relationship with a similar false assumption? 2. Even though the term, "State of Nature", was not used in the diatribe do I still need to assume this person would like to date high school girls? 3. How am I going to talk to him about the 'Peps? Which video game level would you like to skate around ala Tony Hawk's Pro Skater?

Jonathan Yih

Life Question: Obviously you guys are very much cat people, but from listening to you both for a long time, you seem to like dogs too, and don't fit into that tiresome binary of loving cats and hating dogs, or vice versa. Have you ever considered owning a pupper? Hope you both have a peaceful and relaxing holiday season, James in London

1) In real life, you find a scroll of Find Familiar. It can be any animal and your constitution is not affected like in certain versions of the spell. You can communicate telepathically and perceive through the eyes and ears of your familiar, and temporarily (but for as long as you want) dismiss them into a pocket dimension. They act independently but always follow your commands. They don't need to eat or drink. What animal do you choose? 2) You gain the ability to cast any official version of any spell from DND that isn't a healing/cure disease/resurrection spell. You can cast it as many times as you want and without any spell components. What spell do you choose?

The game industry comes together and decides to do a fun bit where they all trade IPs. Which developer/IP combo would you most like to see? Which one would have the greatest comedy potential, good or bad?

Alex Shaw

I'm curious about your thoughts on Peter Molyneux's "play to earn" nft game. What do you guys think of the current state of the industry in terms of monetization in general. Do either of you engage with micro transactions at all?

The Walking Man

Gary do you like any other Garys (Garies?)? Gary Newman, Gary Old Man, etc. Kole do you like any Koles? I can't think of any other Koles so you can have a favorite Ross but I also can't think of another Ross besides the store.

Gabriel Tindall

I was wondering if you could talk a bit more about what goes into an episode behind the scenes, in general terms—what's the overall process and timeline of playing, note-taking, recording, and editing for an average episode?

Andrew C

I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on how the way you have to chug through games for the network affects your opinions on pacing. I know I have to approach things differently since my game time tends to be a half hour here and there, and you’re at the other end of the bell curve. Do you think that skews the way you evaluate things?

Doug Lief

I know for a fact you’ve answered this before, but what’s a game you would never do for WOFF simply because it would take over a great part of your life, becoming akin to a forever game and derailing the schedule forever

Jordan and Maya M.

Happy near-Crimbo, dudes. Enjoyed Fallout 4 month enough that it got me to give the game another stab. Being a former Salem resident, the witch museum quest in particular was a hoot. Some of the details of Salem’s layout are slightly fudged, but that museum is a real place in a cool old church just like that one. Inspired by that: what’s a real world landmark you’d like to see the Fallout apocalyptic version of?

sleepysmiles

While it’s moreso an adaption of the books, would y’all consider covering the Witcher show on Adaptation Decay? Maybe multiple episodes for season 1 coverage?

Jake Fortier

Why is Review so goddamn good?

Hello! Two questions (if I may) - 1. What are the absolute essential bits of equipment you would recommend to a brand new podcaster? I've been developing an idea for my first podcast for a while now and I'm currently working a temp job for a company that offers decent staff discounts on recording equipment. Any general advice appreciated! 2. Does Kole like Silent Hill: Downpour? Thank you both so much for all your hard work, your shows are my happy place! Very best wishes, Thomas (Yorkshire, UK)

If you could pick one game to put on mobile platforms that doesn’t exist on them today what would it be?

Ralph

Invisibility or teleportation? You can only choose one. Which one and why? P. S. Do you know what each others favourite colour is? Much love to you both, appreciate the consistency in this inconsistent world right now

Studies have shown that video games, especially mind or puzzle games, help older people retain memory, keep their mind sharp, and help with reflexes. Thinking about that I bought my parents a Nintendo DS and some brain/puzzle games a few years ago to help them out, since they are both in their 70's and my Dad is showing signs of memory problems already. I'm not sure how much it's helping, but they still use it today. Have you guys ever done anything like this, and if so, how well did it work?

Greg Polander

What's the difference between a sphere and an orb? Can a lowly sphere rise to become an orb?

Tom Healey

Little touches Appreciated in games. I was playing Halo Infinite’s campaign and realized I couldn’t see Chief’s legs. Prior games had his legs show in first person. It’s just one of those touches I like in games.

You can have a port of any game run perfectly on the Switch, but it must be a "GBA Enhanced" edition. I would love a portable Dishonored that's on 25 e-reader cards, and Corvo screams "Yahoo!" every time he blinks.

Popofoshosho

What are your thoughts about zombies in media? Are they overdone, not done enough, or just right? Is there a particular type of zombie or portrayal of zombies that you really love or really hate?

Inter-Party Conflict

I have recently been playing a heck tonne of Dawn of War and its amazing expansions. RTS games like that are my favorite thing in the world even though I'm terrible at planning and strategy and always lose/could never in a million years play against real people. Do you guys have any specific genre or mixed genre of game that you absolutely love to death but seem incapable of getting decently good at? Side question because what they did to Dawn of War breaks my heart, are there any games you loved where the sequels are so completely different in style it just killed it for you?

Matthew Shaffer

You wake up one day. You look at Twitter. #NoDuckfeedDecember is #1 on trending. Days go by and it doesn't stop! The patreon is going down the drain! You don't think you can make it to January! What do you do??? PS: Silly question aside, thanks for another horrible year made easier by great podcasts. Happy holidays and y'all are the best!

Juliet St. Moon

Which fictional novel worlds would you like to see adapted to video games?

Adam Finn

Are there any game series or worlds that you wish were mega-franchises with potential for varied spin-offs, ala Mario or Final Fantasy? Or do you not want to see your favourites made into bastardised kart racers?
