Call and Response: WOFF! Dispatch April 2022

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, April 18 by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

This came in too late for our recording but the unsatisfying answer is maybe. We're chewing on it.

Also PRGE just announced dates. You guys thinking about going?

Gabriel Tindall

There’s another question about BCS earlier, and we talk about it briefly in the episode. I’m watching the S6 premiere right now, in fact! - K

Duckfeed.tv

You guys watching Better Call Saul? One of my favorite things listening to old WOFFs is when you guys are talking about Breaking Bad contemporarily. I just want to hear you talking about current BCS.

Newlywed Game WOFF edition! Kole, if Gary could only pick one videogame to play for the rest of his life, what would it be? Gary, if Kole could only pick one videogame to play for the rest of his life what would it be?

If you have a group ready to go, the best thing to do is pick someone to be the DM (it’s more work but a lot of fun!), grab the starter set, read rules, and start playing! Don’t worry about doing it “right” or knowing all the rules. Just the two cents of a rando who’s been into rpgs for way too long.

Scott Jarvis

Why, thank you kindly and much obliged!

Jonathan Scratch

I would suggest 'Nyarlathotep' by HP Lovecraft. Hastur I'm not so sure about; some great stories obliquely mention that one: 'The Whisperer in Darkness' and 'The repairer of reputations'. I'd recommend all of these.

What are your favorite games purely going off story?

TomahawkRunner6

Do you love lamp?

GreatVegetable

Any notable games you covered for WOFF that secretly were a struggle to complete, either due to difficulty or just pure “i can’t”-ness?

Ross Foniri

media question: seeing as spectrevision dropped richard stanley last year due to abuse allegations, who do you think would be a good director/writer to fill out future lovecraft adaptations? personally, on the strength of the lighthouse, i'd love to see robert eggers tackle the shadow over innsmouth, and for benson and moorhead to tackle the dunwich horror

Cassandra Banner

With the final season airing currently, can I get y’all’s tight five on Better Call Saul? If you haven’t seen it can you at least wax upon Bob Odenkirk’s talent and how scary it was when we almost lost him last year.

Jordan and Maya M.

Which classic Simpsons episodes are your favorites? I always appreciate the amount of references ypu two throw around, it hits me firmly in the funny bone

Curran Duford

Okay so fuck, marry, kill, but your options are Patches, Rune Bear, and Dung Eater 🥵

Juli Reed

What fictional restaurant would you all love to visit? I always wanted to try the million dollar birthday fries at Uncle Moe's Family Feed Bag.

Ipoop4U

Is there a DLC or expansion that you enjoyed more than the base game? When I played Muramasa Rebirth on the Vita the DLC characters were so much fun to play that it made it hard for me to go back to finish the main story.

greyrain

Hey guyyyyys! I presume its not too bad so I think its safe to ask, what's the worst misunderstanding or argument you guys have had regarding your work life together? OR, what's a random favourite memory either of you have of your time together? I've listened to nearly 100 days worth of your ridiculous jabbering 😉 and I always enjoy the comfort and rhythm y'all have together, like you were childhood friends or brothers. Thanks for the art. Jabrader out 🤙(this is off air stuff but I suffer from mental disorders and always need headphones in to take my mind off things, so you guys are often there for me in a very real way and I appreciate that a lot, I hope you both know your art is important not just for posterity. The podcasts helped me through a lot of tough moments. Sorry for the sappy stuff but thanks didnt feel like enough. For a couple of strangers you guys made quite the impact lol.)

With every new gaming generation graphics get better and better but in recent years the leap has been smaller. Do you think technology will eventually plateau if it hasn't already? Also, cheeky follow up question, how do you think gaming can improve in other ways outside of graphically? Can the more powerful technology be used to make games more immersive or mechanically impressive, and if so, how?

Chris Hales

You fellas have successfully turned your hobby into your career. Has this had an overall positive or negative impact on your attitude toward your hobby? I hope it's been overwhelmingly positive for your attitude toward your careers. Has there been any unexpected side effects of merging your hobby and career? Is there anything you wish you knew about the hobby/career dynamic before you merged them? I know you won't read it on the show, but you guys are fantastic and all the shows are delightful.

After 10 years I can now say that WOFF was definitely a significant part of my childhood I recently went back to the first few episodes of the show to see how much you have changed, only to be 5 minutes Into the Megaman X episode and hear the question "do you think Malcolm X would have been more successful if he had the same powers sigma has" (never change boys) Anyway my question is Have you guys ever looked back on your past works and either cringed or learned from them.

erhm03

We'll definitely answer on air, but for ease of link, I think this song is perfect and just about makes me happy cry every time I hear it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pODdlAnk4-U&ab_channel=LabiSiffre-Topic

Admittedly, this is more of a Gary question but as a cosmic horror fan I haven't actually read anything that features those good bad boys Hastur and Nyarlathotep and want to deepen my appreciation of them. What books, comics, movies, etc. should I consume to really get a diffinative example of them

Jonathan Scratch

From’s games and most games that borrow the Souls brand of storytelling seem to have NPCs that serve some purpose in the narrative or progression of the game. It’s been commonplace in since the dawn of RPGS to have towns and villages populated with citizens who are either non-interactive or are programmed to repeat the same phrase. Ocarina and Shenmue then gave these NPCs their own schedules and routines in order to make these locations “more immersive”. Skyrim has these sorts of towns everywhere on the map with only a select number of NPCs that feel distinct. Do you think these sorts of locations add to the immersion of the world or it is just unnecessary set dressing that can be cut?

Which video game or TTRPG religion would you follow if you had no choice but to pick one? You can assume that the chosen religion is also true in this scenario. Real world religions featured in video games don't count.

Luna

If you could convert one finite game into its ideal feasible "forever game" form (e.g. a narrative game getting well-realised procedural stories that interlink, and/or systematised character relationships), what game would you pick?

Fenreliania

What song just fucking melts you? Gary, you alluded to Skeeter Davis's 'End of the World' before. Donnie and Joe Emerson's "Baby" (which I first saw in "The Comedy" (with Tim Heidecker)) immediately comes to mind for me. What else?

Lewis Shaw

What does a day in your life look like when you have videogames to play for the show? Do you wake up and go straight to gaming? Is it a marathon binge? Do you have to force yourself with discipline? Give us the details of this dream job! Thanks for the show :)

Ragavan Suresh

Second this!

I recently got around to playing Detroit: Become Human and wish I had played it years ago, cause it's great. Among one of my favorite things in the game is there's a android named Chloe who is on the main menu when you launch the game. She reacts to real life events such as if it's early morning and you played late last night or if it's a weekend or a major holiday. Also she'll try to talk you out of continuing the game once things get worse and will say nice things such as 'I'm here for you' and 'I really like what you did with your room!'. It's one of my favorite game gimmicks in a game. What's some of yours?

Greg Polander

In honor of Roguelike Decade on WOFF, have either of you ever gotten really into a classic-style roguelike (e.g. Nethack, Moria, ToME, ADoM, etc) and would you ever consider covering one for the show? Nethack was the very first roguelike I really played, and while there are a lot of things that are friendlier and just more fun about more modern entries in the genre, I do think it has a level of variety and interactivity that's still kind of unique to that older style.

Spring cleaning...Do you do it?

Hi G&K, longtime first time here. I have Elden Ring on the brain, and I was thinking about how one area where the game (which I love!) doesn't stack up compared to earlier From games is in the design of its boss arenas. In Dark Souls 1, it's easier to list the bosses that *don't* have boss arenas that meaningfully impact play than those that do. In Elden Ring, 95% of arenas are empty rooms, occasionally with some columns a la Ornstein and Smough. I think this simplification may be a casualty of increased boss complexity - as bosses get wider movesets, it can be too much to ask players to navigate an arena that isn't simply an empty circular or square-ish room. This started as early as Artorias of the Abyss, which contains 4 very good boss fights, all of them harder than most of those in the base game, all of which take place in simple arenas. So my questions: What are your favourite boss arenas in games? What makes a good boss arena? When is a more complex arena welcome, and when does a simpler arena do the job?

Toby

Me and my friends want to get into D&D but all of us have 0 experience. Any suggestions on how to get into it?

Chase Moore

Hey Team WOFF! I recently listened to the DEATHLOOP episode and thought it was super insightful. I was actually on the marketing team at Bethesda for this game, which made me particularly interested in your perspective on the invasion/multiplayer mechanic. This was something we thought about a ton while building marketing campaigns before launch--more specifically how to/how not to highlight comparisons to other games (Dark Souls being the obvious one). My question for you is: In your opinion, how, if at all, can studios and publishers best learn from previous games, and use similar mechanics in new ways? Do you think a unique mechanic like DS invasions belong in other games/settings at all? Thanks for the many years of wonderful content!

I’m somewhat new around here - sorry if this has been covered before. How did Duckfeed start? Did you start making podcasts first and then realized you could turn it into a business, or did you start making podcasts with the intent of making it a business in the first place? How long did you have to work on this before you started making enough money to pay yourselves and do this full time? How many employees do you have? Do you see yourselves doing this for the foreseeable future or are there other endeavors you’d still like to do someday? Thanks!! Btw, love your work. Could seriously listen to you guys talk about anything 😍

I'm a Sands of Serkonas (Dishonored 2) defender!

Tom Healey

What game that never ended up coming out were you most excited for? (Either cancelled or wallowed in development hell)

Holland Hume

I can answer that right now, it's the opening cutscene of Devil May Cry 3 lol

Terra Parker

What's the best diegetic use of music/in world song in a video game?
