My definition of "fan service" may just be poisoned by eggerious standards lol. The camera is never glued to or leery at her body. Likes to put her in fun outfits, but Loid gets that too, and many people thirst for him as well. Regardless, maybe "fan-service free" isn't accurate, but "not skeevy" I would argue for

I would argue that Yor's assassin outfit is absolutely fan service. She wears a boob-window dress and high heels while killing people.

Thanks for the response Gary! Even an updated favourite bosses, areas ect ect list show made to include Elden Ring & Sekiro (although I can’t see much Sekiro making the list) would be awesome. I just want to hear you go guys talk more souls πŸ˜‚

We were super positive about bloodborne! Weirdos! We did a grand tour before we wrapped up the first run that sort of functions as this, if you haven't heard it. I don't know that we'll do another area by area, even if we end up replaying bloodborne/old games for fun. -GB

I read the previous series from the same author/artist, Monster x Monster years ago and its just this particular guys sense of humor. I read a lot of gag manga and it doesn't click for me either. Everything I've read of his has a dumbass protagonist in a serious setting, the only solace in Road to the Erdtree is that in this one the protagonist is not insufferably horny. Quite a few of the jokes rely on manzai-style comedy which doesn't really translate well because it is so reliant on puns and verbal gags.

From what I remember both guys were very positive about Bloodborne? Ha

My heart can't take Gary verbally abusing Bloodborne again. Somethings are best left dead unfortunately πŸ˜”

Would you guys consider doing episodes revisiting all the other soulsborne games? Like an episode on Demons Souls then Dark Souls then Bloodborne ect ect… I know you have done it in the past but I would love to hear you thoughts on the games all these years later… favourite moments, favourite/less favourite bosses & what you think of the story. Basically more reason to talk about the games I love! Haha keep up the great work πŸ™ŒπŸ»

Welcome to another episode of Gary hates everything. ;)

Regarding the question of "who's responsible for this," Tobita handled everything. (The "Story: COMPANY NAME HERE" credit is pretty common on adaptations of existing work.) I did a little digging, and I found an interview Famitsu did with him where he discusses how the project came together. Quick summary: 1) He got the offer to adapt Elden Ring around the time the 2021 Summer Games Show trailer dropped (he thought it was a spam email initially). There's a bunch of questions where he talks about his experience playing the game for research that are pretty much what you'd expect: there's a long section covering his struggle against Malenia, first playthrough clocked in at about 200 hours, he watched Game of Thrones as extra curricular research when he saw George R.R. Martin was attached, etc. 2) While discussing what approach to take with his editor, they had a hard time imagining how to do a straight adaptation, but Tobita thought juxtaposing the surface level hyper-faithful visuals with absurd gags might be fun, and they gave him the okay. He then spent his initial drafts seeing how far the Powers That Be would let him push things, and to his absolute shock and surprise they let virtually all his ideas through as-is. The rest is history. 3) The manga is uploaded worldwide simultaneously in 12 languages--when asked about how the rest of the world is responding, Tobita explicitly comments that "It's pretty unlikely anyone outside Japan is going to find this funny," but he does mention the "Let me solo her" guy running around naked with the pot on his head as an example of the universal humor that seems to naturally emerge in From's outwardly serious worlds, and hopes international readers find something to enjoy in his work. I'd be real interested to see how Gary and Kole would take to 2 of the biggest gag manga/anime right now; Spy x Family and Kaguya-sama: Love is War, both of which love letting jokes stand without underlining them and are also fan-service free...but that doesn't stop the internet from thirsting after the mom from Spy x Family. I don't want to recommend them, because doing so is poisonous, so....um, I will just say that those 2 don't do the things that defeated Gary here
