Unfilmable 56: Marble Hornets

On this episode of Unfilmable, Gary and Kole--

Did you hear that?

I think we need to leave.

Unfilmable 56: Marble Hornets

Comments

I remember watching these entries with a close friend who dropped out of college and moved back to our hometown. it was a whole event when a new entry dropped. our takeaways were basically the same. it was cool and fun and charming with how amateur it was. sometimes spooky and felt ahead of it’s time, but very film school. if I remember the timeline correctly, it was around the same time as Cloverfield’s viral marketing “Slusho” campaign. and the Venture Bros mystery of the Orb. two of my friends got really, really into forum diving on both of those as I just sort of sat by and watched and listened to their theories and thought it was cool. but I could never be bothered myself to go that deep. and seeing in real time the payoff to The Orb with them (or Cloverfield being nothing to do with any of the marketing) did fill me with a sort of mean spirited glee as they cursed the fact they sunk countless hours into trying to predict stuff that ended up being completely irrelevant. I think ultimately when more characters and dialogue were introduced to Marble Hornets we all just collectively stopped caring, but it was an extremely fun thing to experience together in real time. they were weird times but they are times I remember fondly.

Absolutely, I was there too, getting spooked so much. And I was 25. I had the same thoughts about binge culture and LOST, half the fun of watching that show was reading the forum threads afterwards, for every single episode. That is just gone.

This was such a nice surprise! The sicko in me wants you guys to do a season 2 and season 3 episode lol

Gary DiFiore-Ridolph

This was great! Going to put another recommendation in for the BBC podcast The Lovecraft Investigations - can’t say they’re good per se but very quaint BBC and surreal to be listening to a lovecraft story that integrates 2020 hahah

Finished the episode, and as Unfilmable doesn't have a listener response segment, I'll speak my feelings into the void here. Im really happy about how you made sure to mention this was a very very freshman effort. The two main creative minds, Troy (who plays Jay) and Joseph (who plays Alex) were both in film school during the making of this. They were still learning the process, and I wouldn't be surprised if the moments you mentioned where they ham fisted a trope was literally them learning about something in class and saying "Holy shit we should do that in Marble Hornets". Kole's statement of "You had to be there" is absolutely true. I was 13 when this started, and a new entry releasing was an event to be celebrated among my friends. We would theory craft in the weeks or months between videos. The comparison to Lost was very apt. You don't get that type of talk over the water cooler media anymore. I could go on a whole other rant about binge culture. All in all, this was an important, but very flawed, part of my childhood that I am so happy you guys decided to cover. Related, you guys should keep this type of horror media in mind even after the strike!

Excellent! Haha. I remember discovering the channel a couple years ago and my wife making fun of me for becoming "scared" of the moon (I thought this was going to reply directly to the comment on my original comment here.)

I thought for sure we were building towards doing House of Leaves with kole talking about keeping that powder dry. Maybe a good candidate for a non-union product? I'm very excited about Perfect Blue, too. I watched that supereyepatchwolf video about it years ago and meant to watch but never did. Perfect excuse now!

Chapel Collins

Jumped in the comments to recommend this as well!

Matt Bixler! Hello!

Amazing episode fellas! If the strike continues on and on, I highly recommend checking out the YouTube channel LOCAL58TV for some awesome eldritch horror videos. Only 9 videos in total but they are really interesting and creepy horror based around the concept of how your local TV channel would shut off around 1 am with a sign off message and that horribly unsettling elevator music (if anyone here is old enough to remember that ;D )

Matthew Shaffer

Fixed!

Duckfeed.tv

This literally (I mean literally, literally) scared the hell out of me when I first saw the series back in college. Like I would jump out of my skin every time my roommate walked into the room

Robby H.

Would lovee to hear you finish the series, was one of my first big Internet Media loves that I have a lot of affection for

sylvia

I'm having the same issue, but I use PocketCast, so I assumed that was the reason.

Malachi McRee

Fantastic episode guys! I appreciate how you announced the caveat of how amateur the project is while still giving valid criticisms. I'd like to recommend Kane Pixels content on YouTube if anyone is hankering for MH style content in 2023. This is the guy who started the "Backrooms" phenomena and his stuff is getting weirder and more cryptic. It's very akin to MH with alot of speculation and group talks.

Michael Whitmore

You know with Unfilmable branching out to internet ARG stuff, makes me wish for a Ruby Quest episode. Eldritch Animal Crossing, pretty wild.

Kay Francis

hey guys, just letting you know, the unfilmable exclusive feed hasn't gotten this, as far as i can tell

Cassandra Banner

I re-watched this once it was announced to get ready for this episode. I'm totally prepared for you guys to tear into it, but my listen is probably going to be filled with me saying "Well that's a valid criticism, BUT..." because this was such a big part of my life when it released. I loved MH and THAC as a whole, and it sucks how it all ended.

Malachi McRee

i feel a Gary roasting imminent

Cinnamon Toast Cunt

oh hell yeah, i was planning to watch through marble hornets soon & this gives me a push lol also, i'd eat an entire car live on twitch for an Unfilmable on Beau Is Afraid. i need to know how y'all feel about Beau Is Afraid

bee !!

Been waiting for this all month! Was such a big fan of it when it came out, and following it with a group of people on forums, figuring out the TotheArk stuff was so much fun.
