Yes, it is nice to know that if anyone is here on my property then they do not belong. Being able to identify different types of explosions is definitely a good skill to have. My wife and kids always ask me, so they are a work in progress also. I also have to identify different types of helicopters for them. They are getting better though.

Listening halts on patrol are great to calibrate your ears in the woods.

One thing I am trying to teach my family is how to distinguish all the late night fireworks from gunfire, a transformer blowing, etc. I have to get my wife down to the range anyway. As for listening at night, I do this and my mind races - sometimes I wonder if I will overreact to kids trying to climb my fence to get in / out of the neighborhood. I need to get back to the type of acreage you have that I once had as well, where anyone coming on the property needs a good reason.
