Personally I think everyone here made good points, which is a testamemt to how good the writing is.

Personally I prefer the Jimmy and Kim dynamic, but Jimmy and Chuck are a close second.

It's tough because Chuck has known Jimmy for so much longer than what we have seen. From the couple of months that we have seen of Jimmy's life so far, he seems like a good man who is just doing the right thing, but Chuck has watched Jimmy do this routine of fucking up, coming to Jesus, and then "slippin" right back to where he was before time and time again. Maybe this really was the turning point for Jimmy and, with Chuck's help, he would have turned the corner and been an upstanding lawyer though I think that is pretty unlikely given that we have already seen Jimmy do some morally dubious things. Either way, after years of being hurt by Jimmy's backslides, does Chuck really owe Jimmy the benefit of the doubt? Given what he knows about Jimmy, I think wanting to distance his firm from him makes sense. SPOILER WARNING: The above reading of Chuck's actions paints Chuck in the most positive light possible and takes no evidence from future episodes. Personally, I think Chucks real motives are much more based on jealousy and a superiority complex than anything else which is pretty gross.

Obviously Chuck and Jimmy are the focus of these discussions, and for good reason. Amazing final scene between these two in this episode. But also: "What ya packin?" "Pimento."

Dan

I really disagree with this take. Everything we've seen is that Jimmy is a good man who wants to do the right thing. The outcome is unfortunate, but it's a self fulfilling prophecy, because if Chuck loved and believed in Jimmy more and if Jimmy had just the right support system that allowed him to be creative while doing his job, he could have been a great and moral lawyer.

But you will never know if things would be different if Chuck supported Jimmy. Being part of that big case, working alongside his brother could have been a turning point for the better. We know where he ends up of course but people can change and it was the circumstances, people around Jimmy and his own choices that pushed Jimmy where ends up. This show is brilliant.

I didnโ€™t think about it when I first watched this episode, but I canโ€™t help but realize that ultimately Chuck was right about Jimmy. This show and BB have conditioned us into thinking through a morally relativazed lens, specifically through the role of sympathetic or false-protaganist characters. But if you had seen none of this show or BB and evaluated the lawyer Jimmy turned out to be independently, you would realize that he caused a lot of pain. He enabled Walt and was ultimately either complicit or too weak-willed to make clear moral judgments. The Chicago Slippinโ€™ Jimmy ended up being exactly what Chuck thought he would be once he had a law degree. The writers did an outstanding job making us feel conflicted about who to agree with.

Peter Gould has talked about how this was not their original plan for Chuck. At first he was meant to just be kind of a burden for Jimmy, but when they were shooting the first episode Michael McKean's performance had a lot more pride and strength to it then they had originally thought and that made them think about Chuck's views on having a brother like Slipping Jimmy when they were working on the last half of the season. It's a great example of how they write these shows in a very organic way, episode by episode, instead of having some grand plan outlined from the beginning which is what a lot of people seem to think is how they write BCS and BrBa. Also Odenkirk's performance in that last scene is incredible.

This episode is really the turning point of this show, it really finds its footing from here. I loved Jimmy and Chuck's relationship so far but their dynamic from here on out makes for some of the best television. So excited to see what you guys think of Chuck's character in the future. I've seen many reactors side with him and many side with Jimmy which is a testament to the writing of this show and its characters!

Dante

I don't know if you guys know any bible stories but the Chuck/Jimmy relationship reminds me of the prodigal son. It's a story about a father who had one son who was loyal and hard working and another who was a screw up. The screw up son eventually fell on hard times and came back to his father, who accepted him with open arms. But the good son in the story was bitter and resentful because he felt cheated that his father could love them both the same when he had done everything right while his brother broke all the rules. I feel like Chuck resents Jimmy in the same way. He doesn't want Jimmy to become a lawyer and be successful like him because he feels like he did everything right while Jimmy cheated and took shortcuts. He feels like Jimmy doesn't deserve to get away with it. Anyway, the Chuck/Jimmy dynamic is the best in the breaking bad universe imo, even better than Walt/Jesse.

Was Chuck right? If Chuck had been supportive of Jimmy I personally think things would have turned out differently.

Chuck finally showing his true nature. I love it. This episode is so amazing. Both Jimmy and Mike are set off on a path that they can't turn back.

Avery

Definitely agree.

Mike speech was so good. A wise old man has wise words. Its kinda crazy cuz as much as an asshole Chuck is, he wasn't wrong. In the end, what got Jimmy screwed over is his nature of playing around with the law (Breaking Bad). Can't say which side was right or wrong but Jimmy was very similar to Walt. They could have turned their life around had they played by the rules and went straight ahead. They had the talent in their own field and yet, they chose the life where they felt "alive" even if it was self destructive. Idk I love how the parallel between Walt and Jimmy is.

Danny

Chuck was a real villain here. He couldn't tell his brother to his face and instead conspires behind his back and makes Howard take the blame. He's just as conniving and sneaky as 'slippin' jimmy' ever was. And that's the irony is that he's not so different from his brother and is just a self righteous asshole who thinks he's better and owns the moral high ground. Chuck is the type of character that I intensely dislike in real life. There's nothing I hate more than people putting others down from a perceived sense of superiority.

Camzeee

Chuck was so spineless. He made Howard take all the blame for him fucking over Jimmy. His whole spiel at the end was so narcissistic and self-righteous.
