Vinland Saga 1x14 Reaction

Vinland Saga 1x14 Reaction

She was so ashamed for committing a “trivial” sin such as theft and imagined it as a horrific thing that she had done. But once she watched the Vikings murder 62 people she found her “heart to be racing” (translation used in the blu ray copy). As she says: she never imagined that such evil people who didn’t fear god existed.

Goob

wait starting from when?

luffy

If it’s so vile, are you just hate watching it at this point? So that you can try and make people feel bad for liking it in the comments? It must be, cuz you keep coming back to it and then posting. I legit don’t think I’ve seen you post on another show. Just this one. That’s vile and you hate. What I mean to say is, are you okay? Feeling lonely and this is how you know you’ll get some human interaction? Hope you find a better way to spend your new year my dude.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

If you listened to the discussion Lola understood it immediately. Anne was so afraid of going to hell for stealing the ring. Then she saw what can only be described as true evil. After having seen what vile humans exist she probably thought that her sin is nothing in comparison. This is all interpretation since she doesn't actually say "I feel elated". The correct translation is "My heart is racing".

Rinne

I still to this day am a little confused as to why that girl says she is elated despite the terrible deaths of her family and village people.

Gabriel Barott

@Jake Hey It's a show full of vile characters doing vile things, why would I not hate it? Can you even explain how is that not the case?

Orr Malus

Why? Because Goblin Slayer is actually good?

Orr Malus

Agreed but this was obviously premeditated. He chose to value 62 lives for the prince. He’s flawed. But it is true to his character that he would do that.

Goob

I don't think people will drop it for a lack of action. Season 1's appeal was never the action anyway.

Fish Smell Bad

Depicting is a word, as someone has said. Fun fact: if it seemed meaningless to you after repeating it several times, it might be because of semantic satiation. Repeating words makes them lose meaning for the listener: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_satiation

GreedCtrl

2 week break got it, enjoy your time guys

Ulfway

will you guys being going on a break?

Ulfway

I hope people give season 2 a decent opportunity, many are going to drop it because it isn't as action-focused, but the manga is a masterpiece and I'm sure Mappa did an excellent job

Anto

Comparing it to Goblin Slayer- to call you a fool would be charitable to you and insulting to fools.

Jay Craig

Malus my dude, 41:20 - 43:10 of the vid is just what you need! :DD

Rinne

It's fuckin hilarious how much you hate this show 💀

Jake Hey

👩‍💻🍿

Kara the gamer girl from Mars

You still don’t get it and if you did, that would be even worse. I feel bad honestly, but hey, you’re an adult. You can grow on your own. You were very fortunate people tried to meaningfully engage with you. Happy Holidays! 🎄

Rare

I'm not saying Ashelad was right, but in my opinion it's more peaceful to just die instantly than suffering and starving who knows how many days.

terrier

@IkkyT Yes, I even made the comparison myself directly but I'll repeat it here. Both Vikings and VS showcase the savagery of Norse culture. Vikings hooks you in by juxtaposing more sophisticated and morally gray characters like Ragnar and his family to the dumb typical viking. We want to see Ragnar succeed over others because he's a good person by comparison. In VS there is no such contrast because every character is evil. In VS there is no Ragnar character to root for. I want to make the caveat that Vikings is also a show written by committee so its plot eventually becomes incoherent because later on it tries to cast a wide net in order to catch as many viewers as possible. So I'm not comparing Vikings as a whole but only the first 2-3 seasons.

Orr Malus

@Odd & @Don "The themes of this story are so obvious", "The violence is there to show you what a tragic and terrible world it was back in those days." I have pointed this out since episode one. The whole series is just the first episode(s) (about Thors' path) drawn out to an absurd degree. People were even annoyed at me for DARING to call this show obvious and predictable. I doubt anyone will apologize to me for pointing out the same things both of you are now saying. It seems people weren't angry at me for having the wrong idea about the show, they were angry at me for having the correct idea of the show AND not liking it. @Odd "Guilt plays such a major role for Thorfinn, that the idea that the story or the readers would justify his actions is beyond laughable." I don't know if you understand what to "justify" something means because that's literally the driving plot the show, and the girls (viewers) said from early on that "he's just a child, what choice did he have?". Even 2 characters in the show repeat the same justification almost verbatim. Episode 5 or 6 I think. But this got me thinking, maybe me not liking the show has to do with the fact that I don't find any of the characters to have justifiable motivations. @Nikodem "Are you trying to say that protagonists should always be good people or it's not worth to follow them?" If that's what you took from my comment in which I talked about Wanted and recommended Funny Games then I don't think you even began to address my point.

Orr Malus

I love how they hit on religion for not just this show, but this ep😬 Everything about this episode felt like midlife crisis of hypocrisy on the belief of religion. How she felt elated really got to me really thinking sheeshhh... As a young buck that kinda comes from a Christian strong-family, this really made me think that Vinland Saga is one those shows that legit cant be called "overrated" or "written poorly," cause its not if we getting these type of eps lol. Still will always be a believer of Jesus and God, but this ep was amazingly done

Alex cleveland

Definitely the heaviest episode so far. We knew the nature of Vikings and knew stuff like this happened on the way but it still doesnt take away the dread and shock to see it happen in such detail. Granted, one could argue this act of plundering was less for pleasure but almost a need to survive. It almost gives it that "if we dont take their food, the army would starve" kind of justification. And yet, it doesnt take away just how simply and brutal that was. Almost to give us a reminder "yeah, in case you thought there were good guys in this show, think again."

Danny

God yes the latest one with the ending song had me bawling just from 40 seconds trailer.

ifnarta

I don't get your point. Are you trying to say that protagonists should always be good people or it's not worth to follow them? How else would you challenge the viewer/reader/whatever to become more wary of this kind of positive prejudice towards the protagonist? I also want to ask you - what about the fact that those characters live in an environment drastically different from somebody in XXI century, who can afford to support content creators on Patreon - in other words, us (the point which was mentioned in the discussion)? Do you consider that "mental gimnastics" as well? Finally, don't you find any entertainment from following the stories of people, who are not paragons of virtue? How evil can a protagonist be for you to still follow them? What about redemption arcs? You in your comment talk as if those didn't exist. Not every piece of fiction is like Wanted, you yourself mentioned Goblin Slayer as an example of a story with a tone shift at some point. You ask about the point of this story. Have you seen the entire first season of VS already? Have you read all of the released manga volumes? If not, how can you judge it so harshly and arrogantly fill your opinions with absolutes? If yes, then perhaps for you it has no point at all, but it doesn't mean that others can't find one for themselves.

Nikodem

Nice discussion, loved to hear your opinions about those characters and your view on discussing complex characters, which are bad people. You are smart and very perceptive, I really like how you catch on things which are not so obvious, like the point of the scenes with Anne and the scene with the friar and the brothers. Really liked your exchange about Thorfinn. By the way, Thorfinn is 17 or 18 at this point of the story, if I'm not mistaken. Sure, he is a minor, but I would not call him a child (that's up for everybody to decide on their own, though). To me, his childhood is already lost to him, as Lola has said. And yes, depict is a real word :DD

Nikodem

Bro, alright Ima try to break it down for you, respectfully under the assumption you are actually trying to understand and not constantly troll just for lols. SMALL SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU DIDNT WATCH THE FIRST SEASON. First of all, the story isnt over. So theres much more to come. I wont want to post more due to spoilers but if you want specific details I can message you privately. Second, the violence isnt an aspect you're supposed to watch for the entertainment. That's not the point. The violence is there to show you what a tragic and terrible world it was back in those days. The theme has CONSTANTLY been hinted at throughout the whole show. The talk of "love", the talk of "what a true warrior means" or "a true warrior doesn't need a sword". You are literally only watching the show with the idea of only seeing the violent action scenes and not the actual dialogue that's happening in between. Shows, plots and themes have layers. You are only seeing the blood and claiming the show has nothing else when it actually gives you much more. Thorfinns journey, Askeladds background, Canutes growth, all these are part of a larger story that will continue on. This is only just the prologue. Not every show needs to have a clear "hero" or "villain". Let me put out an analogy as well: Attack on Titan. The show in the beginning was more black and white. We were obviously rooting for Eren and his squad against man eating titans. Even til s3 we were able to back them whole heartedly because for the most part, what they were doing was the "right" thing. In season 4, the show takes it to a whole another level, showing that theres a great big world out there and just because they were the protagonists, it dont necessarily make them heroes and their enemies the villains. The world is more often gray than black and white. So hopefully, you got some insight. If not, well I tried. If Vinland Saga is not your cup of tea, then thats completely fine. Nobody should force you to actually like the show. However, you should also stop bashing it at every single episode just because you didnt understand or enjoy the show. Doing it once at the beginning is fine just to state your opinion but doing it on multiple episodes? That's just being a hater.

Danny

I think the argument isn't the ends justify the means, but rather if he weren't in charge, it would still happen. Askaladd wants to act as straightforward as possible and cut out all the bullshit, but he also understands the kind of people he's leading. He never boasts about his intelligence, never praises his men for murdering or raping, he just focuses on their capabilities and expectations, trying to be as efficient as possible, especially for the innocents that he encounters. The image of Askeladd is a tool he uses, and his men are under control because he does what he can to make sure their "victories" out weigh the cost of savagery. He wasn't prepared for a blizzard at the beginning of winter, and he adjusted his morals so that he could move towards his goals.

Nathan Elkin

I hope I don't need to say this again, but it's an easy statement to disagree with. This show isn't about vikings, it's about the idea of love in a world that's a contradiction to such a concept.

Nathan Elkin

This show isn't about heroes and villains. They're just people, and you have no enemies.

Nathan Elkin

The idea of love presented in this show completely changed my world view. They keep talking about it in later episodes, but this was truly the start of facing such ideas. In previous episodes, they would hint at something, provide a suggestion, but this is the first of many episodes that really challenges ideas of religion and fundamental themes such as love and death.

Nathan Elkin

This ending song from this half is in my top 10 anime EDs. hard to outdo it

Isaac

Merry Christmas everyone !

Sosa

@Orr Malus Have you watched the Vikings series?

JT

The Christmas themed episode ahah

Valentin

Here's an anime analogy that sums up my feelings for Vinland Saga: it's like watching the first episode of Goblin Slayer except the Goblin Slayer never comes.

Orr Malus

This kind of reminds me of the Wanted comic book. As readers/viewers we are primed to instantly default to protagonist = good guy. We will even do all sorts of mental gymnastics in order justify the actions of said protagonist. Just like in Wanted, every character in Vinland Saga is a villain, Thorfinn included. From the very first episodes of VS we learn that Thorfinn is selfish, violent, and obtuse, but we turn a blind eye to this because he's a protagonist. At no point in the story was there any presence of human decency in any of them yet we continue reading/watching in the hopes for some sort of twist or redemption. The main character from Wanted even makes fun of the reader directly for this sort of thinking. So I bring the question again, what is the point of Vinland Saga? Its method to engage the viewer/reader is clear: traumatize them through violence and they will continue watching in the hopes of catharsis at the end of the story. But what if the episode that makes all the gruesome experience "worth it" never comes? Would you still say that spending all that time going through the experience was worth it? There's a great movie that explores this idea specifically, it's called "Funny Games". I highly recommend it.

Orr Malus

This is the episode/chapter where everyone went “wait a second this show is going to be something very special” Not that it wasn’t great before. I love every episode in its own way. But this episode really just showed that this series was trying to be art. Not just a generic series to watch for fun.

Goob

These Vinalnd Saga reactions and especially the discussions have been sooo good these last few episodes and its such a joy (feels a bit weird saying that considering the grim nature of this episode) and I'm so excited for the discussions for the rest of S1/S2. Happy Holidays to everyone :)

DefensiveOnion

I hope you girls are having a good holidays!

Jack SV

I just love how they released three trailers: one normal, one with the opening song and one with the ending song. I especially love the new ending. I'm really looking forward to the second season.

Robert H.

Anyone else watch the new season 2 trailer? Man I'm so excited.

Fish Smell Bad

Masterpiece of an episode in terms of direction, themes and scenery. I don't think I've felt this much dread watching any other anime episode.

Rinne

Merry Christmas everyone.

Melkor

If Lola is not crying, I don’t want it lol

Draken

This was the ep, mostly the final ep, that made me read the manga. By far the darkest ep and yeah......just yeah, the thumbnail says it all, especially Milena's face
