I just came across your lyric analysis video on YouTube tonight. I’m so glad I did! Your breakdown of both lyrics and cinematography is fantastic. I’ve watched the short film so many times (I’ve honestly lost track 😅) and you managed to find so many filming/directorial choices that I totally missed in all my other viewings. I’m definitely more lyrically driven in both my music consumption and my own music creation. I’m excited to dive into more of your videos. I know this is ancient, but I really relate to the "sometimes I feel like I made you up" line. I was in a similar relationship a few months ago and I often felt like this person was a drug I'd been craving for my entire life. They were beautiful, they were smart, they were poetic, and they seemed to understand me perfectly because we were so similar. It took me a few weeks after the breakup to realize, but they were just mirroring me. I was being open so they feigned openness and told me what I wanted to hear. I wonder if that's how Taylor and Jake's relationship started.

I might be older than some fans (I'm Gen X), but this has a huge impact on me every time I watch it. I was in a terribly abusive and destructive relationship with my children's father for 13 years. And the kitchen scene is 100%. It made my hands shake the first time I watched it. That's exactly what it looked/felt like for me. Using any difference as ammunition to make you doubt yourself. I love Taylor sooo much. You too, KP ♥

Thanks again for the amazing insights. One more thing that I noticed: obviously the color red is very significant here. In THE kitchen scène the colors are very subdued except the knobs on the gas stove that are bright red… 👀👀👀 Once you see it it’s very obvious because it pans to that shot at the exact moment he starts to really gaslight her. It’s like Taylor wanted to scream: THIS IS WHAT GASLIGHTING LOOKS LIKE!!

I think this short film helped us realize just how toxic and manipulative he was to her in their relationship. I always knew he wasn't a great guy, but I never realized just how abusive and manipulative he was! I feel like the scene where they were fighting was really important. Seeing how he just acted as though he "couldn't remember" what happened that night and he couldn't see why she was upset with him, I'm certain that it wasn't the only time he did that to her. Which is why the song makes so much more sense to me now. The fact that throughout the entire song she is asking him if he remembers the things he did to her, or the things they did together, it feels so powerful. It's as though she's saying, "You always told me you couldn't remember these things you did to me, but I KNOW you remember this..." I can't even put into words how it makes me feel, she's such a good writer!!!!!

I am so glad that you caught the "'eff the patriarchy' keychain on the ground" scene. I was going to say something about it in your last video but I knew you were going to react to the short film so I waited :). What you said about it is exactly how interpreted that line and I love how Taylor did this. It really shook me. I remember a guy doing that to me in a past relationship. The look on her face when he tossed the keys and she had to bend down to pick them up.....I felt it. I also remembered feeling that way too.

The argument scene literally makes me angry every single time. I also think that our association of Sadie with Stranger Things and her being "that kid from Stranger Things" emphasizes the age difference even more. Like Taylor just wants everyone to finally see that she was just a kid when this happened. Especially with the unfair treatment and reputation she got from the media afterwards. Honestly so glad shes out of this mess of a relationship now.

I love the fact that you said “wowzers” at the end because it made me think of her other music vid 😂😂
