The Little Prince Book Study: Part 1- Chapters I-V

I read chapters I-V of the Antoine De Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince. As I read, I stop and discuss some of my favorite parts. The first part of this book study is meant to encourage you all to think like a child. I hope that you allow yourselves to get wrapped up in the magic that is this book. Although I do discuss some characterization as well as a bit of the symbolism, I am saving my in-depth analysis for later chapters.

I am reading from the Richard Howard translation. If you wish to follow along, try opening this link: Full page photo (zabanbook.com)

I love this book! My best friend just got me the pop-up edition of the same translation for Christmas, so the timing couldn't have been better. I remember being able to use my imagination to turn flat, plain landscapes into magical scenes sometimes with golden fairy dust rising from between rows of trees and sometimes with cracks forming in the ground that make way for large monsters to emerge from the ground. But I wouldn't say that I've completely lost that ability to imagine. Rather, it feels more like I lost the desire to imagine. I often go back to reread this book but only certain chapters at a time, not going in any particular order. And I've noticed that I'm drawn more toward the later chapters with the water merchant and the fox and things of that sort, but this served as a much needed reminder that the beginning of the book is also so important and beautiful in its own right, so thank you for this!

I know exactly what you mean. I think I lost that ability somewhere along the way, too!

That's a great translation as well!

Yes! I am so trying to recapture that feeling!

I have a Penguin Books translation and I think it's just some of the most beautiful writing out there

When I joined your patreon and saw that you were planning this video series, I reread the book on Christmas Eve! I think something I've lost from childhood is the lack of self-consciousness (or maybe that'd be better off worded as I gained self-consciousness 🤪) - Just the ability to tune out whatever people may think of me and not care

One of the things that I lost is the ability to dream, the feeling of thinking that everything is possible.
